Hi Danny, just want to say thank you for this lesson. I have been massively struggling with my pitches including all the usual villains; fats, thins, shanks. Tried this at the range this morning and immediately started connecting with the ball brilliantly! I've never pitched the ball as well. Thank you!
A great way to be less "handsy " ! Thanks for sharing. I adopted this technique a couple of years ago and it made a huge difference for me. Awareness of elbow rotation is a great refinement to the technique to keep the impact pure. Keeping the feet close and slightly open wasn't mentioned, but it was demonstrated in this video. It helps with the rotation and power. This doesn't need to be restricted to wedges either!!
Who is this fella with the tremendous County Down accent ? This chimes - note perfect - with your Pete Cowen short game session. The line of the takeaway is the bit that I struggle with and this feels like the key. ‘ If one sides goin’ up theother side is goin’ down ‘ Thanks for this brilliant lesson.
Danny, you know from a multitude of previous comments how much I love your videos: they help us become better golfers. There's one type of video I especially love: when you take on the role of the student. Not just because it's reassuring that even a great golfer like you needs some practice to implement new swing ideas. No, it's because you have an unrivalled way of explaining these things simply and clearly. And often even better than the pros you take lessons from (I know your modesty would prohibit you from admitting this, but it's true ;-) ). You have once again made my Saturday. Tomorrow I'm going to the driving range with something new to practice.
Cringe. You'll still go to the range and be over the top. Haha. I know the hope that these videos can instil, looking for that one tip that will change your game.
Hey Danny. Am down at Kiawah and tried this out on the range. Some successful, found myself blading a lot. Wondering if this is picking up on the strike or perhaps more likely the old back gets tired and the body stops but the arms continue? Also sounds like this is predominantly left hand centric? Lastly, are You using wrist cock or trying to keep the wrists fixed throughout. Thx
@@DanielMaude Danny, had a try in the garden to get the feel, took it to practice area and then range, absolutely brilliant works so well, could be the most effective tip I’ve tried & will take it to the course this week. Great strike and so consistent, thanks.
How many of the top online golf coaches have the humility demonstrated by Danny in this video? What a fantastic video. This really will help my game. Thanks Danny.
Quite a few, as it turns out. Many of them have learnt/are learning that, even if not genuine, they need to demonstrate said humility to become more relateable and empathetic with the audience. YTers such as Rick Shiels, Peter Finch, Andy and Piers (MeandMy Golf), Eric Cogorno, etc., have all put out videos where they are being coached by elite coaches. It's not necessarily that they need the instruction (well, Rick does), but just another way of presenting it to us, and an additional 'hook' to attract views. Sceptisim aside, I do enjoy the access this approach gives us to some of golf's elite coaches. And I particularly enjoy Danny's offerings in the space and agree with Marcos that Danny has a knack of simplifying and clarifying concepts for us less-than-elite golfers. He takes often complicated biomechanical 'stuff' and gives us movements we can perform. Its a talent, for sure.
@@DanielMaude Thank you, for yours ☺ I've been working on this both from mats and grass, and find on grass I am thinning a few that go a lot lower and longer than intended. What might be causing that?
Hello Danny, I'm a subscriber, and your Sunday email arrived as normal. I watched this video a couple of times with great interest. Our golf group played on Monday morning on a tough golf course. I normally do not try anything on the golf course that I have not practiced and confirmed on the practice range. However, I found myself well short of the green on several long Par 4 holes. In need of an accurate Pitch Shot, I recalled your video, I tucked in my left elbow, trusted it, and you and swung my wedge with confidence from about 65 yards out. The ball literally ended up one foot from the cup. It was not a fluke, several of my pitch shots landed close; and without any practice of this tip. I was pitching and chipping the ball so well, a friend said "You really have your wedges dialed in today!" Thank You Danny, Jack (following you from Florida)
I’ve stopped watching anyone but Danny. His ability to simplify things is uncanny. Even in this video he was seeking to find a way to find a word picture for the move as he himself was learning it.
Great lesson. I tried it on the course without practicing it beforehand. It really worked well. Very secure feeling. Just to give credit where credit is due, who is Alistair? I didn't catch a last name.
Don’t laugh. I went to practice this in the basement (winter here) and I couldn’t believe it. Every shot went to exactly the same spot. There definitely is something to this. Can’t wait for spring! Thanks Danny. I look forward each week to your videos! Lots of great advice and simply given!
You taught us about the inward elbows for other shots but great to be reminded about it. I did find Pete Cowan’s tip about feeling a downward movement at impact in pitching rather than forwards really beneficial. Thx, Danny. You show us that you never stop learning in golf and in life.
What club would you use for this shot Danny, sand iron I’m assuming? And what would the result be using a pitching wedge or nine iron? Great video yet again. Nothing like the KISS principle. Keep It Simple Stupid!
Hey Danny. I saw this at the airport yesterday and when I got home this evening I went out into the garden and hit 7 or 8. Alls about 40 years and right off the bat, I hit them as crisply and consistently as I have hit a wedge. Beyond excited to try this properly on the range and then on the course. The feeling of the elbow turned in, and the shoulder locked is a great feel. Thank you. Ps. Who is the Irish pro who gave the tip?
Is there a recommendation on club choice for these distances. I keep flip flopping between my 60 degree, sand wedge and gap wedge which doesn’t help my feel for distance.
Wow, Danny. This left-arm-focused lesson REALLY boosted my confidence in hitting the ball crisp and straight around the green -- something I've been struggling with for ages. Thank you!
This is what makes Danny a great teacher, he translates difficult to describe moves into how it should feel, even his teacher commented on this, that's a better way to describe it I like that!!
I,ve been struggling with pitching for the last 3 years. Lessons with my local pro have become frustrating , I can do the drills he suggests but soon struggle when back on the course. This method works for me. I feel if I work on it , I will once again be able to pitch consistently. Thank-you
Absolute game changer, had no confidence whatsoever with my short game fatting, thinning or duffing most shots. Use this technique everywhere around the green now. Works like a charm. Can't thank you and Alistair enough!!
Danny- seems like this is a good thought with irons in general. Just a small version of a full iron shot? Love it, love it for pitch shots for sure. Just had some struggles yesterday with 60-80. Plan to work on this for sure. I also noticed you did allow for a little of the fishes tail with the trail hand, no?
Danny, what a great video ! This is technique really works! Where is struggle is the 120-130yd shots? so for me a Gap and pitching wedge distance?? Sometimes I thin it and or get a strike that just doesnt have the distance, so now I'm having to chip onto the green and scramble for par!!! thx
Thanks Danny. Very useful (especially for me who’s left handed but play two handed sports right handed). I didn’t catch your fellow coach’s name. Who is he?
Danny, these shots have been killing my rounds for years. Thanks for this lesson. Additionally, would you please add some context around ball position relative to one’s feet along with weight distribution between your feet when executing these shots. (For example: L/R 60/40, 50/50, etc.)
Hi Danny I tried the technique in my son’s simulator and got instant success. I then used the same position of the leading arm with every club including the driver also successfully. My body position for the longer clubs was normal but with the leading arm the same as in the video every shot was so much straighter and longer. Am I correct doing this. Thanks. Gavan
So, how does one flight a wedge shot down? 🤷🏼♂️ Better players hit LOW wedge shots, WITH SPIN, that bounce once then check up. The only way I try to flight the ball down is to lead with my hands, which you suggest NOT doing. Great stuff 👍🏻 … one of your best. Trying this today ☝🏻
Hi Danny great lesson as always. I have been out on course today to give it a go. Unfortunately the ball kept coming out low and as Alistair would say “hot”. Am I standing up too soon? All help as always very much appreciated. All the best Trevor
Not necessarily Trevor, check where you club is striking the ground relative to the ball. Is it in the same place every time. Should be just in front of the ball
Biggest thing in distance control for me. You said, it’s almost like I just let gravity falling control the club. That’s exactly right. That’s how you get consistent distance. Now find a repeatable backswing height and let gravity and motion repeat the same everytime. Now find your distances with your 60, 56, 52, 48, etc…. And you have your shots from 40-90 with the exact same swing every time. Much easier to get consistent distance with the same swing on different clubs than focusing on acceleration levels through the swing to manage distance.
Super video, the length control works almost automatically! I don´t know why but my body knows - 😃. Not a single fat shot and great finish. I´m remembering Ben Hogan´s pictures with the outturned elbows.
Really depends on the type of flight you are wanting. Always remember the full swing is led by the legs then torso then arms then club, this is the power sequence. The short game is completely the opposite. The downswing starts with the club head
Danny, how far were you away from the green during this video? Seems like for 30 to 50 yard shots this works, but were you able to ever get 80 to 100 yards out of this technique and if so how? Thank you for this video, great technique
Danny, this was outstanding, I tend to struggle with chipping around the greens. This may help me, but when standing over the ball, are you trying to hit the ball first or the ground so that you use the bounce of the club?
Great video. I practiced it from 80 yards out and hit the green 7 of 8 times. Awesome video. Can you use this method for full shots with your other clubs? I never tried that.
Danny, this looks similar to an anti shank drill I watched recently. I will add this elbow-in move when I get to the range. Thanks! BTW, palm trees? Where were you?
Danny, Thanks for my missing link. Sometimes I keep my arms connected and have great results. Sometimes I "think" they're connected but they aren't (because of the issue your video describes). I better understand now why some of my pitch shots are good, and why some of them are fails! Looking forward to focusing on this info in the future! Thanks
I must admit, purely by accident, i was doing this at the range earlier this week. It worked really well with SW and 60 deg.wedge. It felt wrong because i thought i was coming across the ball but yet repeatable time after time. My thoughts were that i was using the bounce of the club to better effect and the ball popped up perfectly.
Wow, great stuff. Can't wait to try it out. I like all your videos, but especially those with Pete Cowen & company. Hopefully we will see more from your winter vacation! And looking forward to hearing more about your book - best seller for sure.
Light bulb video ! Very well done explaining to the masses. Can you continue this concept of left elbow as it relates to the full swing as well? And maybe how it is the same and differs to different swing lengths. I think understanding the mechanics of the left arm will help many of us with consistency. Great video here!!
Thank you Danny! The way you describe driving the handle forward is something I've done forever because I'm a left handed power hitter but my right arm is my strong arm. So I have that tendency to want to pull through with my lead arm and get the butt too far away from my body. My strikes have always been so inconsistent, even though I play to a 4. This was gold to recognize myself and what I need to do with the handle and butt of the club. I tried it out yesterday and my strikes were much better, distance control was beautiful. Now to get the alignment right and I really think this will get me over the hump. It's time to start taking advantage of my long drives!
What grip should we be using while pitching? Mine is neutral so should I try with usual grip or go to a weak one? Really want to try this one asap.. thanks!
