I've been learning English for almost three years now and I find it very easy to remember nouns. But all other parts of speech are whole different story. And the most difficult part is words with dozens meanings like "smart". It's a very common word and I'm pretty sure anyone know its basic meaning even if (s)he doesn't know English, but check this out: 0. smart girl (clever, intelligent) 1. smart rain (heavy, intensive) 2. smart wine (heady, strong) 3. smart pace (brisk, spirited) 4. smart distance (considerable, great) 5. look smart (elegant, stylish) 6. his eyes were smarting from the dust (hurting) 7. he is still smarting from a put-down (grieving) 8. I hope you'll smart for your carelessness! (pay for) Yay! That's cool, isn't it? "Smart" doesn't look simple now, huh?

Japanese, Chinese & Korean all has no more than 500 thousand words counting repeating definition with ancient and new terms .. 150,000 for French, 130,000 for Russian & 100,000 for Spanish .. in average a man use 6000 word in every day English & 40000 the average words knowing by a educated college American ..

you must remember character, tones and meaning in chinese
@mcdemetpu1489
@mcdemetpu1489 7 лет назад
Yes, but in number of words is poorer, tones & vowels in usual is to cover up the shirking vocabulary in a dying language, and if they seem to repeat the same word over and over for some people, it is may be for that reason .. Hausa language proverb even simplify that by saying that even a donkey can speak Hausa .. there is even a language in Africa that uses clicks of the tongue which remind us of the Maurice code rather than a language ..

+Chef Derek Butt (ChefB) actually in spanish too, although there feelings I do not know how to say them in English, since apparently there is no translation as: "te amo", "te quiero", "me encantas", "soy un enamorado", "estoy enamorado", "me enamoraste", "me regodeo", etc. So that's why I say in Spanish. bye!
@robjorrosmar
@robjorrosmar 9 лет назад
Here I try to explain some words that have no translation from Spanish to English. “Te amo”: I love you (the same). “Te quiero”: someone whom you have affection but not love. Someone who you want much but do not give your life for her. “Soy un Enamorado”: being that feels love for another. (you are that being). “Me encantas”: captivate your attention for her natural attractions like magic. “Estoy enamorado”: I am in love (the same). “Me enamoraste”: give birth and grow your love for her/him “Me Regodeo” : Pleasure or satisfaction experienced by something that is harmful to another. greetings from Mexico!

That is one cool trick Emma! I've heard about similar one before in Mentalist series.(actually it is more about sequence of events, but still..) Protagonist Patrick Jane is like some mental genius and in one episode he was describing similar method as a "Memory Castle". You imagine the best place you know or been (your room for example) and make associations with all the stuff that being stored step by step. Like 1st thing you see when you come in is 1st in the list you have to memorize.Or it can be people
@bereketbiz
@bereketbiz 9 лет назад
this trick will be quite beneficial because of the nature of our brain. our brain learns, remembers and process information if we use "Association" during encoding of information. our brain is also good in remembering something which is visualized. visualization and association are the cornerstone of this technique. i think spaced repetition along with this technique surely be a panacea for once and for all.

English has the largest vocabulary out of every language? I don't think so at all. Actually, I believe it has one of the most limited ones. At least from my experience, english is not even remotely close to german, french and of course spanish when it comes to using different options or alternatives to describe the same thing.
@englishpowercapenglishpowe8233
One second, As far as I am concerned English is a rich language in words,. Once I remeber a friend of mine thought English was so limited in words and he said to me in English English speakers use only the Word beautiful , but in Spanish he said so many adjectives , for example lindo, hermoso, bello, atractivo precioso, magnifico, estupendo, grandioso, maravilloso, monono etc.,. And I told him, EXCUSE ME in English we have also a lot of synonyms for that Word: For example Gorgeous, pretty, wonderful, lovely, cute, splendid, good-looking, attractive, breathtaking for a lanscape for instance, marvelous, precious and used in every day conversation He said, I HAD NO IDEA . Please, don't get me wrong I only try ot explain or clarify this point because a lot of peolple think English is limited, but educated people have a wealth of vocabulary. The same happen in Spanish : Many people use the same words . Ok, I find all this pretty interesting. I gotta go now because my daughter wants me to go shopping. BYE
@DpGz
@DpGz 9 лет назад
English Power Cap English Power Cap Yes, you are actually right. But that doesn't change the argument. I wasn't suggesting that english is totally limited when it comes to vocabulary, but it is unjustified to say that it has the largest vocabulary of all languages. Other languages are more complex and have different alternatives in the construction of sentences and ideas, something that of course doesn't change the fact that you are describing but it actually makes english more limited in comparison to spanish, for example.

I struggle with expanding my vocabulary as well. I scan the news on the Internet and not surprisingly there are lots of vocabulary I do not know of. I watched all videos here and your video helped me as well. I use this as a trick, when I know a word that is similar to new word I am trying to learn, I make a sentence that has both words in it. For instance if I didn't know 'ice-cream' but knew 'cream' as a word, I would make a sentence such as 'I ate ice cream while I was applying cream to my face.' When you use similar words you remember the sentence easily and you remember the meaning. It doesnt have to be cream, it should be a word sounding similar to the word I try to learn, I often imagine the sentence I made up myself to remember the meaning. Then I manage to remember it so often. It works for me. I do the same thing when I learn different meanings of one word, I try to use different meanings in one sentence, it doesnt always produce logical, meaningful sentences btw in both cases.. but your mind manages to remember it anyway. It worked for me. Thank you so much for the helpful videos!

For instance silly but I was learning 'flush' and it has so many meanings. I made up a sentence that goes like 'My face flushed with anger after I learned you didn't flush the toilet after you.' It is silly as you can see but it works, I remember both meanings of 'flush'.
