Sound treating a car can be done by adding vehicle sound deadening material in the trunk. Sound test before and after sound deadening a car with a decibel meter, real world test too see if sound Deadening your car actually works?
The results actually surprised me and I will give you my honest opinion and review at the end of the video. I used dynamat extreme as the sound deadening material I will use in my vehicle trunk. You can also use something much cheaper like amazon basic sound deadening material for vehicles.
Here is my full article with all the information and links you'll need to get the job done right! soundproofguide.com/how-to-so...

Great video. I’ve been interested and fascinated with vehicle NVH for many years (since the 80’s). You are very much in point in that the newer cars sound very tinnie. Especially Japanese vehicles (I’m not saying they are worse). I believe they have a different philosophy in acoustic management in comparison to let’s say German cars. Japanese cars tend to have very little acoustic insulation and focus more on just balancing the sounds/noises. Even a Lexus LS sedan has very minimal insulation but is perceived quiet because in my opinion they target the source of the noise producing components. Anyway, in my experience, sound deadening and acoustic sound absorbing insulation do work especially when placed in key areas, however, the quieter you make the car the “ noisier” it will get. If you quiet or reduce road noise the engine or wind noise will then be perceived as sounding louder. You quiet that then squeaks and rattles in the interior will be very prevalent and sound very annoying. What a rant, I’m sorry. Lol. I love videos like these that have a before and after testing and that are very informative.

You are absolutely right! I've gone through these phases on my Honda Jazz. I covered the entire floor, doors, roof, trunk and hood with layers of Noico and Closed Cell Foam, the floor also getting a layer of MLV. My current 'noisier' phase is from the front wheels / tyres / suspension and my NVH mode is still switched on in pursuit :)

Car sound insulation needs more sound insulation and sound absorption materials. Shock-absorbing materials don't have much effect on decibels. The focus of the rear compartment is to fill the voids on both sides of the tires. The shock-absorbing material should not be too much, otherwise it will cause low-frequency pollution, and low-frequency sound insulation is relatively difficult. My car is 110KM/H 71-74 decibels, DIY result is 60-68 decibels. for your information

Do you have an aftermarket sound system in there? What kind of tweeters are in your sail panels?

Guys! What he did in this video is great but, in fact, for a normal sound isolation you need 3 layer. First layer (what he did in this video) it is the vibration layer and part of the sound nois.The second ot will be the termo and sound layer (between 6-12 mm thick) and the 3rd layer is just the sound layer ( a phono absorbant sponge at arround 15mm thick). This way you will see a great change, having all 3 layers not just the first one, the vibration absorber layer that it is shown in this video. It is great that you can see a change with just this one but, it is much more to be done for your sound isolation than just this.

Don't forget the icing on top - Mass Loaded Vinyl layer in the trunk and under the floor. Achieved close to a dB reduction on my Honda Jazz, just with this.

This material gets rid of vibrations and reverberation. It absolutely won't lower the road noise, but it may change the pitch and do a better job of keeping music in the cabin. It will make more of a difference when listening to music than it will eliminating road noise. Sound deadening is much more complicated than people thing. It takes a lot of time, money, and and adds weight.
@soundproofguide
@soundproofguide Год назад
It would lower the road noise if you place it on the floor of the cabin. But I agree with you that it won’t lower the road noise by placing this in the trunk. It might if their on the wheel well!
@noobwow2009
@noobwow2009 11 месяцев назад
Yea. The basic design of the frame and some holes already designed how road noise get inside the car.. not much you can do. That’s why Mazda was advertising how the resigned the frame to make it less noisy. 😂 Honda needs to step up their game

nearly all Sound proffing'' vids shows just adding butyl, which is really just one of 3 materials you really need. after the butyl, add MLV, and some foam, doing that really makes a much more dramatic difference ,

Do you think this can deaden the noise enough so nobody can hear anything? For example; if I had there was an adult male screaming in the back of my trunk?

3db is a reduction of 50%. Sound follows a Logarithmic scale.

Why did you not put it over an existing sound insulation in the trunk?
@soundproofguide

It wouldn’t stick to the surface. Something like a sound deadening spray could be used in those areas. I could make a follow up video with that type of product.

In the early 2000s i fully sound proof my sadan, with flashing tape.. or flexi seal.. way cheaper.. and made huge difference. People said in the summer the heat would make it full off. But.i went over it with bitchmen paint to stop that happening. Probably cost $ 250 all up to to do four doors, boot, and floors.

A fabric headliner with a polyfill backing added (in addition to adding cheaper sound deadening material) is a great way to lower the road noise. Yes adding sound deadening to the floor, (and)doors, and adding closed or open cell foam in between the outer and inner skins r also inexpensive ways to reduce road noise. I've personally been able to reduce my ambient road noise by at least 3db. Also I'm only halfway done with my vehicle so hence y I say at least. (It's been 3db already and I'm not finished yet. I still have 2 more doors and 2/3 the floor to add material to.)

Although you did a lot of work on the material installation, it doesn't seem entirely scientific. The frequency of the sound is critically important. A decibel reading doesn't give the complete picture. When I have done tests on my own car the biggest percentage of the noise is at very low frequencies, below 2500 Hz. Being able to block and/or absorb those lower frequencies will indeed make for a more comfortable ride experience in the cabin. This may be why with even a small decibel change you may experience a bigger change at certain frequencies that actually make the road noise sensation much more comfortable.

Good morning, can you try putting a layer of 1" thick black rubber foam onto the inner wall of tires. Try doing first the front two tires and do a sound test before later doing the same for the two rear tires. Let us know the value of each tire balancing before & after layering with inner foam. Then do a follow up video after 10,000 miles for db valve vs balancing value of tires vs opening up the front two tires to verify the bonding status of rubber foam onto tire inner wall. 🤣🤣🤣🤣. Regards.

I also want to add that on this video you are treating the trunk of a sedan car. I assume, if that was a hatchback or a van where the space is open, the results of dB dropping would be greater :)

Yes it definitely would be. That's why I have the seats down to simulate more of a hatch back like situation.

@lohengrinknight Год назад
Yeah, not worth it really for just one decibel. I wonder what product you could add to the back of the seats, so when they're up there can be a layer of sound deadener behind them. Maybe a curtain or mlv?
@soundproofguide
@soundproofguide Год назад
A curtain wouldn’t do it but maybe a layer of MLV. Maybe something I could try for a later video if it’s something people would watch..
@lohengrinknight
@lohengrinknight Год назад
@@soundproofguide I'm insterested, indeed. Although people with subs in the trunk might actually want the opposite. I don't have anything in the trunk, so de isolation of that space idea really calls my attention. Regarding MLV, it only comes in small panels, and that could be a problem. Do you know where one can order large sheets? Thanks, man!

2:04 not true that 3dB cuts noise by half. 3dB means a 50% cut in physical sound energy but the way the human ear/brain works humans can barely tell 3dB difference and 1dB is simply not perceptible.

You're wrong on decibels. 3db is half the power. 10db is half the volume to human ears. 3db is noticable, but not half the volume.
