Thank you. This was great. Hadn't thought of using the phone for anything other than reference pictures. Great tips. Look forward to your videos each week for both learning and laughing.😄
Both my left side and right side of the brain were attentive and somewhat cooperative as they worked together to synthesize the information that you so clearly communicated into a common understanding. Really good stuff!!
I think this is the most useful information i have been given. I have struggled with trying to figure these things out. I just gave up. Now I can see how to get exactly what i was needing. Thank you so very much.
Thanks This was fabulous. I teach dyslexic students, but my primary job is teaching teachers to teach dyslexic students how to read. One of my presentations is teaching the different task jobs/talents of right/left hemispheric dominance. You have just done a fabulous job of demonstrating and describing the difference in an artistic way. Everything you said also applies to learning to read. I love it when the science of reading and the science of art collide (probably combine would be a better word.)
Thank you so much Anne! What incredible inspiring work you do. It must make a huge difference to your students to have a teacher that cares so much about what they teach and about the outcome of her students. ps. thank you for the gift as well. It means the world to me!
Great video. The number of times arty people see the world in more interesting and nuanced ways, can lead to such interesting conversations. A visually rich life is definitely more fun ❤
Margot, do you have a downloaded photo app or just use the one that comes with your phone? My Older Samsung wouldn't do well on those close-up shots or shifting to black and white, I think. Any recommendations?
Somewhere -- perhaps here on y.t. with another artist -- it was asserted that we could better see the variations in values of our subject by laying a piece of RED ACETATE over the subject. Has anyone else heard that? Has anyone else TRIED it ?!? I keep forgetting to get such a thing when I'm out & about. (Doesn't $🌳 carry notebook dividers that are full pages of acetate?? I need to tie a string around my finger!!!)
Margot, you combine such entertaining videos with instructive art and painting skills. I love your tips from the art school you attended. When did you ever have time to be a ballerina? My favorite tip from you was the soap holder for paint brushes.
I think the left side of my brain needs an off switch (or at least a dimmer switch!) 😂 My job is VERY left side dominant so I really struggle to let my right side have a say in things! In art I always seem to get bogged down in details and patterns (and paint quite "tight") and completely miss any of the sense of "life" to my art. I would love to add more of a sense of freedom to it.
I knew about using my phone for the gray scale but for color mixing too, that’s a huge game changer. This is definitely a wonderful valuable tool for painting. Thanks for sharing this information with us!
Hullo Margot, I think this is an excellent tip for phone use! I watched another artist making pastel paintings and they took a photo of a reference and turned it gray and dialed up the contrast to allow the artist to see blocks of shades and create a better under-painting! Wonderful tips Margot, Thanks and Please keep them coming!
All I have to say is: I ADORE YOU!!! 💕🙂 But I'm saying more. Margot, you made my day💕🙂 You're amazing, and thank you so much for this valuable information.🖌🎨💕X
My luv. Have you freaking noticed the payoff in SUBSCRIBER STATUS in correlation to your, 'clever as ever' declination video, you remember that silly ol thing that gave me a heart attack where you say, "I just can't do this anymore". Cruel Trick YOU BEEEEP YOU! You can't tease a gay super fan like that. I was seconds away from pulling a modern Romeo and Julieta. Luckily, saved by the truth bell...you go on to say your going to need some time, because your baby, our baby...the Margot Show is calling for a conjunction of all things sugar and spice...she's calling out for better production value, editing, content, etcetera. WOW...I am super happy I've officially, unofficially made you my go to entertainment and educational power-house for all things watercolor, art education, and thank Aphrodite... my beautiful Scrumdiddlyumptious, eloquent and effervescence educational goddess, in her own right. Sorry, nite time ADHD Museum and rattling-on. I know you know what I mean. BRAVO DARLING, BRAVO! I couldn't be more interested or happier. As you might recall....I adore you. And my hand touching the value of truth...your channel, character, comedic prowess, and so on. It's my favorite artistic show to watch when it comes to watercolor with a smear of delicious, freshly cooked up, brain food for the masses. So, thank you kindly, Margot and congratulations on all the positive feedback I keep reading, concerning your newly vamped channel. It truly shows that you TOTALLY had a mission in mind. And starting to pay off in SUBSCRIBER STATUS IT IS! XO - JAMES OH MY GOD... I forget to mention, I died, hardcore where you mentioned spacial awareness and that girl just...WAMS - and hits the concrete wall. That was HILARIOUS
Brilliant, thank you! I use my phone all the time to zoom in and compose drawings and paintings, but I’ve never thought of changing photos to greyscale! 👍🏻😊
I like your art & what you teach regarding art, however truly disliked the cuss - funny wanna be - words. No need. My right brain or left brain does not need this input. There’s enough of that out there with uncultured people. Please keep it clean, professional & culture🤗
Wow Margot, some great suggestions. I already use my phone for drawing…as I often take pictures of flowers, bugs etc when I am out and about…but I never thought of using it for value studies…or really playing around with the aspect ratio…I ‘ll definitely be trying some of these suggestions….thanks a million 😊❤
Thanks for this wonderful video. I have not used my phone this way, but I do have a view finder. I would love to see how you apply this to a landscape painting.
If you drop the photo into a graphics program, like MS Paint or Coreldraw, you can use the dropper tool to isolate individual colors in every regen of the image. This is good for beginners, who want to understand all of the colors in an image. But don't get caught up in pixelization. Especially since rgb values don't correlate to color mixing in paints.
What’s for dinner, hahaha 😂 I can’t even! Tyvm for sharing this! I’ve used my phone for value/hue, but look forward to implementing your other 2 tips. As always, so helpful!💜🙏🌻
Left or right brain dominance has been debunked but the roles of what information is processed by left and right hemispheres is still a theory very much supported by researchers today.
How did you pull up the colors on your phone? Perhaps you are using a phone other than an iPhone. I found the video helpful, but can not figure out how you brought your image's colors up under the picture. Thank you.
Top right corner where it says “edit” and the scroll to the right until you see “saturation”. That’s were you can use the slider to turn it into black and white 👍
Thank you. I do know how to turn it into black-and-white, but in your video, you showed actual color buttons, or paint samples if you will, at the bottom of your photo. I do not know where you got those from?
Thank you so much. I have always used the b/w to check values. But the tip to use the camera for composition instead of always trying to find my misplaced viewfinder. WoW. 🎉😊
I let my watercolor teacher, destroyed my confidence when I was 19. I decided to eliminate the color that day, and just work with black . I was really excited about what I was learning that day. My teacher said” if I wanted to sit there and play…”. My 19 year old self had no confidence. ( I was art/psych). I only went back to class when I had to to complete the course. I don’t paint in watercolors again until I found you and Kristy💕. I love my art again💕 Thank you! Too bad that I had to wait till I was a grandma of 🙃 7.
Thanks!! Very helpful :) Please note that the idea of the brain being divided like that is no longer considered true. The way the brain work is much more complicated.
Outstanding post! I use my smart phone for some things, but you expanded my knowledge. Plus the fact that you are pleasant and fun makes your site a joy to watch.
Nice tips- good use for the phone- especially like the composition tip- always struggle with gettin a good composition- cropping down can help zoom into what is important in a scene and exclude much of what isn't needed- can help focus in on say an s-curve, structure, texture, or whatever it is that the scene is about.
This was such a great video!! I'm such a visual learner so I struggle with the right brain left brain fight constantly in my art journey. I now understand why I'm so much better at grind drawing rather than sketching. I'm going to make my own grind out of laminate and a sharpie for future use. I definitely use my phone as an art tool now I have a few more to add! Thanks for sharing your creative tips, so inspiring!! Now if only someone can give me the ultimate tip on being fast. I think this is where my left brain really dig in her heals...all about slow details...when I really just what to essence and to more on before the paper dries. Thanks again!
Loved this video. I worked in finance all my life and my boss often said he was amazed at my art since I had a LEFT brain. Great tips with the cell phone. Keep your videos coming Margot.
Hi Margot! I’m new to watercolor and have learned so much from your videos! I would love to hear your thoughts on watercolor pans vs tubes. Is there a difference in the quality of paint? Thank you so much for creating such great content!
I enjoy your video's so much, they are both entertaining and informative....taking relatively boring subjects and bringing them to life! Thanks for your genius efforts!
One thing I love doing is taking picture of a piece I'm working on at various stages, partially to post on my socials and send to friends, but also I tend to catch problems I wasn't seeing before in my piece that I should fix. Sometimes I'll even make sure to flip it horizontally in case there's others I'm not catching. Smartphones are so incredibly helpful, especially these days with how much details it can capture!
