What mysteries do the ecosystems of Pikmin hold? A deep dive into the biology of the world PNF-404 - better known to us as planet Earth.
---
In the miniature environments beneath our feet, vast dramas unfold, often without us ever realizing it. But what if we could become part of these sagas?
In the Pikmin series, you play as a character under two centimeters tall, and experience a tiny yet rich ecosystem from the ground level. And though the Pikmin universe is more stylized than some, its surprisingly complex lore makes it ideal for study.
So, let’s shrink down, and see the world from a new perspective…

There is a surprising amount of depth to Bulborb biology. Apparently, the way scientists were able to tell the difference was the fact that regular Red Bulborbs are nocturnal (hence why you often find them asleep during the day) whereas Dwarf Red Bulborbs are diurnal and often hunt during the day. In fact, the reason Empress Bulblax usually live underground is because Bulborb Larvae have sensitive bodies that are weak to sunlight. The only way you'll ever see a larva aboveground is during the night. Since Pikmin 4 is also the first game where you can explore at night, it also introduced Albino Dwarf Bulborbs, which are true Bulborbs after their first molt.

There's actually an actual parasitic pikmin, in pikmin 2 there's a pikmin called bulbmin, which are bulborbs who had a parasitic pikmin dig it's roots into their nervous systems as larva, but when they become adults, the bulborbs hunger for pikmin overpowers the pikmin making them hostile, but the tiny bulbmin that follow an adult bulbmin are passive and can be part of your team, and are immune to all hazards

Based on a fruit found in Pikmin 3's side missions which is resting on a balance puzzle, its implied that each pikmin can lift about 5 times its own body weight. This game revealing the truth of what Rock and Ice Pikmin are is really cool. A parasitic subspecies of Pikmin called Hermikmin burrow into inanimate objects to use as bodies while the "roots" spread out to become arms, legs and even eyes. With the Bulbmin as well it's clear Hermikmin could theoretically use all sorts of materials for bodies, like pure metals, wood, clay or even man-made plastic. Glow Pikmin are weird, but I have a theory about them. I think they can fly because of hydrogen or helium that is stored in their bodies, and they can teleport by somehow disassembling their bodies into tiny cells that reassemble themselves in a new area (you can even see tiny green particles flying into the air when a glow pikmin teleports). Perhaps they aren't one organism, but millions of tiny organisms all working together symbiotically to form a glow pikmin, and the glow pikmin all work together to protect their nests. The pikmin universe has a lot of teamwork involved.

The most interesting thing I find about the Pikmin biology is the insane symbiosis between the Pikmin and the Onion. The Onion uses the nutrients given to it by the Pikmin to not only cultivate Pikmin seeds but also to fuel itself. Furthermore, Onions can implant the genes from eaten creatures into the Pikmin seeds to grant them new abilities. The symbiosis is even more interesting considering how parasitic Pikmin are as a species.
@StonedHunter
@StonedHunter 7 месяцев назад
You just gave me a weird thought. What if Pikmin aren't trying to be parasitic but trying to recreate that symbiosis and failing?
@lasercraft32
@lasercraft32 4 месяца назад
What's even more interesting is the implication that the Pikmin use their parasitic tendencies in order to find an effective leader. Its like they realized that they cannot survive unless they have a Captain to command them, so they're trying to find a suitable host... Its implied that the Pikmin are somehow involved with the crash landings. And when an individual becomes a leafling, they have an unexplained obsession with "dandori," which in-practice is the most important thing for the propagation of the Pikmin and survival of the species. Its surprising how sinister the Pikmin seem to be, despite them being the cute and loveable mascots of the franchise.

15:10 If you read the Piklopedia, it discusses that they are planted in ice and store all their major organs in it, while constantly expelling more in order to counteract melting. 15:35 It's not just human objects, but the carcasses of other creatures, perhaps in an attempt to mimic larger animals to avoid predation. 19:23 I wouldn't say _utterly_ defenseless. I feel like Pikmin 4 has cemented the fact that humanity isn't gone. This isn't a critique on the video perse (nice job, minor inaccuracies but very good), but it seems this is a notion that's been going on in the fandom since Pikmin 2. Due to the map in Pikmin 3, we can see that this is likely around 100 million years in the future, even if Pikmin 4 is a soft reboot of the series, ut that still doesn't mean humanity is extinct. In the Heroes Hideaway, the area that is literally the inside of a house, the building is incredibly clean, aside from all the creatures and treasure lying around: no dust, no signs of dilapidation, bags packed, the stove is on, the fridge is opened and still cold. Houses don't last that long, not in that kind of condition. Not to mention the collapsing sandcastle you displayed in the third area. If humanity had gone extinct, that would have long collapsed. There's a cooking area in the middle of the campsite that is the Giant's Hearth and Collin notes not only that the creatures that use is must be massive, but also that it seems like it was used very recently. In fact the proximity of everything to Hero's Hideaway show that the people who live there are probably a family with kids. As you showed in your actual walk, junk is lying around, but humans are still VERY much present. Just because we don't see the humans doesn't mean they're gone. Spoilers below- There's also the final boss, a dog (albeit bipedal and evolved) that is wearing a collar. Someone had to have put that on him, and if humanity is gone, that wouldn't be the case.
@ApolloDawn85
@ApolloDawn85 8 месяцев назад
Idk I feel like realistically the house would be in disarray after centuries of being abandoned but at the same time if people still exist how would they not notice that their home is over run with creatures? I personally find the universe more interesting if it is after the extinction of humanity, but in all fairness this franchise is not exactly consistent when it comes to lore.

I've only played the first game, and not to completion. When I saw the signs of human life in the game from this video, it definitely doesn't look like humans are gone. I speculate that the creatures in this game are genetically modified by humans. They are probably high in nutrition, quickly reproduce, and some probably serve various uses in an out of the home. Like an edible ecosystem for your home.
@confettigraffiti6055
@confettigraffiti6055 8 месяцев назад
I think the implication was that humanity (or at least the family that's implied to have lived in this house) left in a hurry over something, which is why everything still feels clean and functional. This is why you see stuff like suitcases packed up by the door in Hero's Hideaway. However this doesn't account for the fact that it seems like space dogs like Oatchi are near perfect DNA matches of dogs on PNF-404, and it would take millions of years for life to evolve and change onto other planets (including ours). The final boss gave me the impression that it was like a dog that got left behind when some people left, kinda like an evacuation. So maybe it's a situation where humanity has been gone for a long time, but visits occasionally? No clue

What I like a lot with this franchise, is that, despite how warm colorfull and friendly cuttie in term of visuals, atmospheres and vibes/feeling everything in the game are onscreen, it still manaegd to give and display several dark, serious, obcure and somewhat scary eleemnts here and here. Firstly, the fact that the entire setting of every game occured on Earth, in a somewhat Post-Apocalyptic future where humanity is complete gone, extinct.... The fact that we are on Earth, our own planet, long into the future whithout any more human is NEVER offcially and directly said (for several obvious reasons), but it's very massively apparent and obvious. Even in the very first game we have, very few yes, but still undisputable humans' objects we found as Olimar despite we are mean to be in an alien planet. Mostly the display at the background of human's objects and infrastructures left abbandonned are the direct evidences of the setting.

I imagine the parasitic element would come first, maybe they started surviving consumption, and taking over hosts that ate them? Then over time increasingly developed parasitic control mechanisms began resembling the growth of animals in addition to swarm like developing behavior between hosts, which eventually produced pikmin who adapting to their environments and unique host organisms specialized into the different colors?

I really want a computer port for Pikmin to experience that land again. You brought insight to a world I had once not given much thought. Clearly there’s more going for the world of Pikmin than I remembered! Thanks for the awesome video!

I kind of love the way you attribute real world analogous for even the most videogamey of creature designs in Pikmin, and I would definitely be intrigued to see comparably out there fictional ecosystems covered going forward (But also bringing it back to earth with your discussion on the ecosystems that form around trash, and how when you look at insects scurrying under rocks that's their panic response rather than their natural behaviour) Also, while not seen in Pikmin 4, the pikmin/bulborb hybrids in Pikmin 2 (Bulbmin) definitely lend further evidence that pikmin are parasitic plants which infect animal hosts. They can't be taken back to the onion with you, they can only be found underground, and they start out as enemies before they'll follow you apparently, but... They're there. Bulborbs with Pikmin-like leaves growing out of their back - similar to the infection Oatchi gets during the game, but on their heads - and once you assert yourself as their leader they will follow your commands like regular Pikmin do.

A family of creatures that are very interesting are the Arachnorbs. I'd like to point out specifically the Beady Long Legs and the Baldy Long Legs, which seem to be the most basics Arachnorbs. These, like the rest of the family, seem to have all of their organs condensed in the only highlighted part of its body, being the orb at the center, because the rest consists exclusively of four legs. So this actual body, as it is an orb, doesn't seem to have an actual internal structure, so it is unknown how the organs are stored. And investigating this with an specimen seems impossible, as the body disintegrates when unalived.

As for how Glow Pikmin work? We need to think of this like All Tomorrows. Like the well-evolved Asteromorphs, these beings have biology so far beyond our own understanding, that it seems like magic. Perhaps they have similar gas bladders to Winged Pikmin, allowing them to float. How do they disappear? Perhaps they compress themselves to remarkably small sizes, like several modern-day desert plants; Curling up & appearing dead, until making contact with water.

Definitely interested in more Pikmin videos, it's one of the most underrated environments in video game fiction. I never even considered it was set in a time where humans went extinct, everything like the children's room and the kitchen are in such perfect pristine order that I would have just assumed we landed while everyone was out of the house.

I really love this franchise ! Pikmin as a whole isn't a complete perfect Spec Evo World (it's still messy here and here, in each game), but I am still always interested about the overall take the franchise do with the domain. Wasn't a goal to made a Spec Evo thing in a the first place, and ended up being part of that unvolontary, but I'm very happy how the franchise turned up with what it had gived to us since the very first game to this days ! For the most part, most of the creatures are viable, some others a little less (the ghost-like ones especially), but I would still think it would be better if that was gived to us from which animals families each creatures belong (Bulborgs are what?). But in the same time, if so many stuff is still unanwsered after 4 main games and some little side mini-games, it because it due to be that we are completely in the protagonnists perspective, who are completely unaware of the world past and history. In such aspect, the franchise give a pretty good depiction and simulation about what the exploration of a living aliens planet, even after several expeditions, would be !

There's actually a book about the wildlife of Peter Jackson's Skull Island. I can't remember the exact title but for example those nasty worm things in the hotsprings, the ones that pulled down the dead Chinese Sailor and his Irish friend who tried to save the corpse. Those were originally intestinal parasites living in dinosaur poop, but when they ended up in the nutrient rich hotsprings, they evolved to become large predators instead of parasites.

That part about how we're not really seeing them in their natural state, but their panic mode after we've disrupted their lives holds sooo true to not only many kinds of biology, but even other areas of science that don't revolve around living things. Our test apparatuses can tell us all sorts of fascinating things, but we're always creating some extremely artificial, extremely unlikely, extremely isolated environment in order to run those experiments. Catching one electron, or one photon, in an entirely sterile environment causes them to act in interesting ways which can give us information about how they work. But it's also not something they'd ever have reason to do in a world without humanity.

I started playing pikmin when I was 5 or 6 years old. I played Pikmin 3 for the Wii u. When I got really good at it and I could beat it a lot I decided I was good enough at that to be good at pikmin 1 so I played pikmin 1 and 2. When pikmin 4 came out I beat it in a few days lol. I'm so glad the Pikmin series is finnaly getting the recognition it deserves.

Fun Fact: The Rock and Ice Pikmin are actually a subspecies of Pikmin called a "Hermikmin." A parasitic type of Pikmin that embeds itself into things and controls them with their root-like limbs. The rock Pikmin embed themselves into rocks for protection, and the Ice Pikmin uses ice as a host (they have a "low-temperature core" that prevents the ice from melting). Its also implied that the Onions have a stockpile of stones to use when producing new Rock Pikmin. Hermikmin are likely similar to (if not the same) species as the Bulbmin, which are parasitic Pikmin that root themselves into the spinal cords of infant Bulborbs to control their bodies (with the stem sticking out of their backs) for extra protection against all elements. When the Bulborb hosts get old enough, their insatiable hunger overtakes the Pikmin's control, which is why the adult ones will cannibalize other Pikmin or Bulbmin, while the little ones act like any other Pikmin.
