The Secrets of a UK Prison Lock Up | I did NOT expect what I found!

In this video, join me as I uncover the hidden secrets of the infamous Steelhouse Lane Lock Up in Birmingham, UK. Hidden in plain sight this lock up has over 100 years of history and is also the place where the Peaky Blinders (and my Great Grandfather) were locked up and photographed. From petty drunks to murderers, male and female inmates, the halls of this place echo with the stories of the people who have passed through and I found it a profound and moving experience. Only closed in 2016, it was left as it was when it was closed, and I think is as close as you can get to walking around a Victorian prison & lock up complex in the UK without actually being an inmate or a guard.
Don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe for weekly explorations and uncovering of hidden gems like this. I never know where I will go from week to week but it's always somewhere I find interesting and I hope you do too.
The Lock up at West Midlands Police Museum is open to the public Wednesday - Saturdays and is run by volunteers, many of whom are retired from The Service. The entrance fee at time of publication is £10 - this is a donation used to keep the museum open. Tickets can be booked in advance on the website : museum.west-midlands.police.uk - please note it is occasionally closed for functions, school groups or group bookings so check before you go, these dates were clearly listed.
As always this video was filmed, edited and scripted by me, all opinions are my own, research was done on my own little laptop and I paid for my entrance.

My 2x great uncle, Henry Lightfoot, spent time here. He was the first man to be named a "Peaky Blinder" by the press ( He's literally behind you on the information board! 14:38). It's so scary but he actually looks identical my Dad and my little lad!

That is AMAZING!! Ours looks like a couple of my cousins - it's really strange isn't it? It was NEVER talked about in our family and I kind of dug it up - which hasn't been well received by everyone .. but that's history for you, you have to expect a few black sheep in the archives.

You give so much more than 'dry facts' and that's what makes your videos so interesting to watch. For example your spontaneous comments when you walk through the sites you visit or when something happens or your feelings about something. That al together gives a very honest, authentic report and not a 'scripted' one. Thank you!

Nevertheless, I am glad I stuck with this fascinating episode. My home (Built to accommodate Mill Workers in the C19th) has seen countless passings and several self endings over the decades. Thanks Lucy, I went through Fremantle prison in Perth Australia. There definitely is a 'feeling' in prisons. I did not go in the hanging room, the thought disgusted me. To think some of the kids that ended up in Australia came out as convicts from England, Ireland and Scotland. A good read about a woman convict sent out is "The Potato Factory" by Bryce Courtney. Been here more than I care to remember, back in the 90's. Yes, I can absolutely vouch that the women's cells were literally like greenhouse conditions! Proper hot house! The women had it worse in many ways also, 1 being that we would have to wait ages or ignored all together if we pressed the bell as the officers really didn't want to be walking up and down them stairs! 1 ggod thing was the breakfast... Always a hot fresh sausage or bacon egg butties. Great video Lucy.. New subscriber. Ps) cells still look the same except for the toilet seats... There wasn't any!

I am so chuffed you have reached out! I was hoping someone would, I think that's so funny they have put toilet seats on for the public - they should have left them off. I did think it was strange they were on there actually. Typical they put the women out of the way in a greenhouse - it was flipping BOILING when I was looking around and as a woman of a certain age I am hot all the time anyway - it was freezing outside! I dread to think what it was like in the summer. Good on you for surviving it .. and I fancy a bacon sarnie for breakfast now! Wonder if they have made them there or ordered out to a local caff! x

I don’t doubt this place is haunted with all that dark energy! I also find all the glamorization of criminal gangs distasteful. I’ve never been interested in Godfather, sopranos, peaky blinder romanticism of that type of person. Not my thing at all. This was fascinating. I really feel for poor people being punished so severely for trying to feed themselves and their families. Yes, there were plenty of people that deserved punishment, but putting kids in jail and served corporal punishment, or a guy doing time for stealing a chicken. Sad.

That birching stall is horrendous isn't it? Apparently it's still used in some counties in Asia, don't quote me but I think Singapore - they argue they have the lowest crime levels ... but there's also very little poverty there ... adds up right? Peaky Blinders has brought a lot of tourism to Birmingham which is no bad thing but coming from a family where my ancestors saw first hand how violent and destructive they were... it's a no from me.

The thing is, nobody really knows his story. He might have had something like ADHD which obviously wasn't known about back then. There's probably something going on, otherwise everyone would join gangs. If that makes sense? 😅 My mum had an uncle who would stop the traffic on the A6 to cross the road by stepping out and waving his cap. He seemed to always be drunk, and he would walk a few steps, then yell out and walk on again. All my family would turn and walk the other way if they saw him. My friends would laugh 'he's your uncle!' and I denied him out of embarrassment. It turns out Uncle Jimmy had shell shock. Not one of his family was there for him. 😢 If I could go back in time, I'd give him a big hug and tell him I loved him. I feel so ashamed of denying him 😢
@throughlucyslens
@throughlucyslens 3 месяца назад
There's a good chance he did. I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was 40 🤯 and there's a tonne of "eccentricity" in my family - that's one way of saying it. He did some pretty unforgivable things later on his life and I think that's where the problems arises, But I am glad we live in a society now where we can look at root causes with empathy and not just bin people off.
