I'm Lucy, just a girl that loves to travel on my own. I discovered solo travel last year and now I am hooked.
Lets go somewhere every week. You might join me on a journey by rail, air or sea, hopefully to somewhere interesting! I release a video once a week about somewhere I have always wanted to go.
I'm a bit of a geek .. and love to tell you a story. I was a history teacher for 15 years who was tired of the grind, became self employed and i've been making a life for myself on my own terms for the past 10 years. History is still a HUGE love of mine so don't be surprised if I get excited by old things ;)
This channel is a canvas for sharing life through my lens - whether it's capturing journeys, visiting new places, or simply doing the things that I love to do! Travel with me from the comfort of your own home.
Hit that subscribe button - it really motivates me and always drop a comment - I love chatting to people from all over the world!
First time I've seen one of your videos and really enjoyed it. It's only an hour and a half from us, so I'm hoping we can get there in the next couple of weeks. We're members of the NT, so would be a fairly cheap day out for us. I'm obsessed with medieval manor houses. Ightham Mote in Kent is another great one and Athelhampton in Dorset has always been one of my favourites.
Thanks so much! I would recommend Mondays or Tuesdays if your schedule allows it, weekends especially Sundays can get pretty busy, if you so come down hop across to Packwood House a few miles up the road too, not as old as Baddesley but beautiful gardens and lovely walks ❤️
You're not weird .. I can't pronounce things properly .. I get all up in my head about it and end up saying it wrong anyway - life eh? If I return though I will be speaking like a local :) x
I’m reading the comments and so many reflect what I think about you and your excursions. I could be wrong, but I think your magic is you being just like us. As soon as I saw the notice that you’d published a new video I immediately watched it. And again I enjoyed it. You have bewitched us Lucy! Thanks ❤
Oh gosh, that is a kindest thing!! I've had a horrible few days .. car got broken into .. some rubbish stuff with work and I actually burst into tears - so let me tell you, you have made a "stranger" very happy with those kind words, although I see you all as friends who travel with me xx
@@throughlucyslens what rotten luck! I hope your car wasn’t too damaged and everything is fixed now. There’s a bit of that going on here in QLD. Just this week a friend had a parcel stolen from their doorstep. Not five minutes after the postie dropped it there, it was gone. Plenty of cars are being broken into for coins, tradies tools, anything they can get their hands on. Insurance costs me around $900 a month, but despite the cover it’s never nice to have your car or home violated. My 80+ year old neighbours phoned me on Saturday night, they’ve had a security camera installed. Look at them go! We probably all need to get security cameras/dash cams I suppose. Too many people are short of money and crime rates are on the rise. Work can be rubbish at the best of times, you’re a smart and capable lady, you’ll be right. I hope your weekend is much, much, better! Stay safe and be positive, you are important to your viewers. And remember to promote your kofi account, after your week you could do with a few cakes/slices/scones/anything sweet to go with them. J
We loved your non-biased view on Yarmouth, I've lived in Norfolk all my life, but your pronunciation and spelling of some of the location names are wrong. Lowersoft (Lowestoft) Happisburgh (pronounced Hays-burgh) not Happis-burgh 😂 You also forgot to sample donuts off the seafront and chips off the market.
Haha, I'm a Brummie, you are lucky any of it sounded remotely familiar, we are big fans of "say what you see" and I KNEW I was saying them wrong, I just had a feeling but I couldn't find out .. I need a pal in Norfolk don't I ? Now I am gutted I didn't have chips in the market .. another excuse to return :)
I really want to go back for a look, it looks amazing! Sadly I wasn't alone on this trip so where I am used to being utterly selfish with my time I had to compromise, not all my travelling companions like social history .. THE SHAME OF THEM! haha x
this place is great! neat to be able to step back in time like that. the butcher shop reminds me of the one on the Scottish show "Still Game", and the workshop next to boats/barges on the river reminds me of "Peaky Blinders".
Hey! Peaky Blinders is filmed there - they use the museum for the industrial shots and the boat yard - so you got it in one :) .. I'm wondering if Still Game is filmed there now too .. .I am off to look it up :)
Oh, I love Baddesley Clinton too. I'd forgotten how beautiful it is. We visited on a day similar to the one you on. Those priest holes too! We loved finding those at Harvington Hall too.😊
I love your little wanderings. My husband comes from your area, family lives in Clows Top and Kidder’ now. We visit a lot of the places around there when we visit but Bermondsey Abbey was one we didn’t make it to, so thank you for taking us there 😊
You are very welcome! We are so lucky aren't we? There are hidden things around every corner for our enjoyment! Near Kidderminster there is a nuclear bunker .. it's NEVER open with like 1 or 2 open days a year - I am DESPERATE to get down there!
I absolutely love your videos! Have you ever been to Belton House? I think it was the location for the 80s drama Mondial. I would love to see a video about it one day 😊
That was wonderful. I think you may have had an association with this house perhaps with a past life. I assume you are from the area? Well, you never know Lucy.
I've been into Fortnum and Mason's loos, famously with royal approval. When my wife came out of the Ladies, I looked at her and said to her 'you realise queen Elizabeth's arse might have sat where you've just sat'.....
Interesting place and it is so true we sometimes travel hours to go visit somewhere else but don't know what is on our doorstep And Henry's great tantrum has left loads of ruined abbeys, I'm lucky to have a few big ones with a lot still standing in my area of north Yorkshire
i would visit once for the historical building and it's construction, but that's it......(and being from the US, I had to google what a "plaster" was lol)
hahaha .. yes a Band Aid! Funnily we do have Band Aid branded "plasters" here but the saying just never caught on I guess! Yes. Got to visit Harrods for a look .. but anything else I think meh .. skip!
new to your channel and omg you were born to tell tales of houses and people, i really enjoyed touring with you, i might vistit baddesley 1day its 3and a halfs from me i live on teesside which is in the northeast😊
It's certainly a long way! I have never been to Teeside and I would LOVE to - I would love to see more about the mining industry and visit the docks. I am super interested in all aspects of working class history as well as the big old houses. Thank you for your lovely comment, it really made me smile :)
I do! And I wonder .. I certainly feel very at home there! Strangely I fell in love with Prague in the Czech republic, years before I started my family history and lo and behold there was my Czech blood many generations ago - I really do think we feel things and connection, often with good reason :)
Thank you for sharing your favourite place and telling us some of the stories that happened in that house. Really saw the best and worst of humanity. And whoever first told the fib about the pig’s blood probably didn’t imagine it would carry on thrilling visitors for centuries! Thank you, Lucy!
I think the person who put it there must have had a fabulous imagination! I can imagine some of the jokesters in my family doing something similar, Brummies love a good "story" to tell and this one is an absolute belter!
I live in a late 1800's Yorksire stone rear back to back end terrace in Bradford. From the street every second house has an extra first floor bedroom over the alley that grants access to the rear houses. They have 5 bedrooms whilst the others have only 4. That bedroom count is factoring in the dormer windowed attic conversions that pretty much every house has had done. Each house has a side door off the kitchen into the alley in addition to the front/rear door into the lounge. They are a lot bigger than they look from the outside. The front houses have tiny gardens, maybe 6 feet from front door to pavement whereas the rears have maybe 20 feet.
You know to me they sound absolutely lovely, what a privilege to live in such a historical place. I live in a "2 up 2 down" and sadly I have the 6 foot to the road kind of house, otherwise I love it. Blows my mind when I looked on the census 14 people lived here though. It seems crazy cramped with 2 and a few pets sometimes! Thanks so much for sharing that, really loved it.
@@throughlucyslens These are pretty good. With double glazing, insulation and neighbours on all sides they stay pretty warm with minimal heating. I rent with a friend. We have 2 bedrooms each, it's great, and Bradford is dirt cheap. Our coal shed at the back of the garden could do with pointing. The other end of the street has through terraces that were modelled on the design of the workers houses in nearby Saltaire. If you ever venture up this way, Saltaire would be right up your street.
As soon as I saw the tit!e of this video, I was taken back to childhood and being taught to see and embroider. Thank you again for such an interesting video Lucy 😊
Hey Sally! Good to hear from you! How absolutely lovely! My Mother taught me how to sew too, I still remember her big wooden sewing box and enjoying looking through the thimbles and needles :)
Good to hear from you, too, Lucy. As an add-on to my previous comment, I was visiting a 92 year old yesterday and told her about your video. She was most interested as she had worked in a factory as a teenager and young woman who made badges for schools and all kinds of organisations. We had a long conversation about your video and the way and type of needles that had been used in her factory. I wanted to share this with you and others in this community. Your videos have brought joy not just to me and others here but also those who I share with, and I am sure others who share too. Forgive me for this long reply, but like so many have said here, you do bring so much joy.
This has brought a tear to my eye! I miss taking to my Nan about her life growing up so so much! Thank you! I've enjoyed sharing oral history all my life and this means so much. Please send her my love xxx
Love this video. New to the channel. Glad you liked Yarmouth as it gets a lot of flack and undeservedly so. But you should definitely come back to Norfolk there is lots to explore (I am a resident). Would highly recommend a trip to North Norfolk. Cromer Pier, Holkham Beach is absolutely stunning. Wells Next to Sea for more beach huts! (and fish n chips) Norwich is also a lovely city with a lot of character and history (if you like viewpoints visit Ketts Heights it's a bit of hidden gem). PS did chuckle at how you said Happisburgh as it's pronounced Haysbrough it's one of our quirky place names... Will look into more of your videos.
Hey! I think it's so lazy to run places down, fair enough if you have lived there forever and had a terrible time but to just turn up and follow the same old same old rhetoric is both unfair and pointless in my opinion, you only have to look at Trip Advisor to see you can never please everybody. I cannot WAIT to return to Norfolk, I thought it was stunning. We were on our way to Cromer when we stopped at the lighthouse but sadly I got an emergency work based call so had to shoot back but I will return. I went to Norwich once - only for one day and instantly fell in love with the cathedral .. I will be back :)
Hi!! Another fab video. We did actually here when our daughter was around 10 or 11 yrs old. She loved it! She's 22 soon so I think hubby and I must make a point of re visiting 😊, its been a while and we must use our NT cards as often as our jobs allow. Stay safe and look forward to your next video, Helen x
Thanks so much Helen! It's such a gorgeous place isn't it? It's up there in my best NT properties, I don't think i'll ever get bored of it. Let me know if you go back - I know what you mean about getting the best out of your membership though, I have gone years in the past without using it once - making up for it in spades these days though!
@@throughlucyslens I shall do. Although not NT we are planning to visit Shrewsbury prison museum soon. Rob Rinder has done a smashing 3 part series on CH4 about historic prisons and crimes. Led us to looking up Shrewsbury. Dropped you a 'coffee' via your FB page btw 🙂 X
Thank you so so much! I watched that WHOLE series last night. The Shrewsbury one made me cry! I'm not sure I could enter that chamber. It would take me a lot - if you do go can you let me know what it's like as in really being there? I want to go but that room keeps putting me off xx
Did you visit the town centre? It’s been described as “Jeremy Kyle’s “ waiting room for a good reason. There are obvious problems drug abuse, antisocial behaviour and poverty which urgently need addressing 😢
I didn't to be honest, I'm not interested in shops and such usually - sounds like it's a good idea I didn't! That has made me chuckle, I know a few other places like that...
I had visited with school in the 80s, but I couldn't remember the name and was quite sad because I loved the place. When I happened to visit as an adult it all came flooding back and I've been back many times since. In the same way you have, I have come here when I've been down or going through hard times and never fails to calm and relax. I especially remember visiting the church as well as the house.
I wonder if the NT know what a fan club this place has? Its honestly just got something so special about it. Thanks for sharing your story and ever you see me wondering about - which is highly lightly give me a tap on the shoulder and we'll go for a coffee :)
I loved this video, like you I've loved History. With me it was first year in secondary school, our form teacher taught history. We learnt about the early wooden Keeps and mud huts. We made a model for parents to see on open day following year 1958. I collected grass and dried for the hut roofs. Other girls made pipe cleaner people made clothes. I would like to know more about Wolverhampton where my dad came from. We did visit family very occassionaly. In latter years Derek and myself had a few weekly breaks. First one in Oswestry at a Premier Inn, we drove over to Wolverhampton to see a couple of aunties for a day's visit. After they had passed away we had by then been in touch with Dad's youngest sister who lived in Wombourne on the South side. We stayed at a Premier Inn at Kingswinford a short 15 minute drive to Womborne. Aunty' told us several times to visit the Black Country Museum, we eventually, did that. ( I have seen your video of that visit, sweet memories). During another visit to Aunty's I met up with some online craft friends from Woverhampton. They mentioned going to a craft shop in the area. We didn't go then as we're leaving for home. But following visit we did go, It is at a winery. We had lunch there and I spent quite a few pennies. I've also watched your visit to the Austin village this morning, very interesting. Must get my washing out on the line.
Hope your washing came back in :) Thanks so much for sharing! One of my favourite history lessons was making a Roman SPQR army banner - I took it so seriously and spent hours and hours painting it, my lovely dad cut all the wood and my mom showed me how to apply gold leaf. I walked in with it proud as punch and it was in the school entrance hall for years! I should imagine it's long gone now. I haven't been to Wolverhampton much myself but I know it has a rich industrial history - I will keep my eye out for places near by :)
Oh Lucy , what a wonderful visit. You always bring places to life on the screen. I got goosebumps with this one, what a magical place. Not sure what you believe but I feel very strongly that you had one or maybe more connections with this place in past lives. Thanks for your gift of sharing with us. Love your videos. Xxx
You are not the only person that has said that! How strange. My beliefs are quite spiritual but not religious - but I do believe in spirit and past lives, it gives me comfort there's "more" it's a wonderful house with such a special, warm atmosphere. ❤️
Wow! What a beautiful house with such a rich history. I had not heard of Baddesley Clinton, if I had I would have visited. I have been to Aston Hall 3 times, My Parents were from Aston, Birmingham. Sending hugs from Auckland NZ ❤
You know this is terrible but I've only been to Aston Hall once! Because of all the cuts in funding it's barely open anymore - It's such a shame as it's such an unexpected place in the middle of the inner city!
