How can you write a novel that can’t be put down? George RR Martin may have a few secrets to teach us.
This is going to be a two-part video. It may appeal to serious Game of Thrones fans, but my hope is that it will be of special interest to writers in pursuit of gripping fiction, no matter what genre. This first video will focus on the prologue, and the next will focus on Chapter One. In both videos, I’ll be trying to isolate some of the specific techniques Martin used to make A Game of Thrones such an irresistible page-turner.

Great, man. This is gold. I'm a college professor from Venezuela, and I'll show this video to my creative writing students tomorrow. At least 20 new subscribers. Keep up the good work.

Thanks so much for spreading the word, Juan, that's very kind. Happy to answer any questions from your students that they leave in the comments. I actually spent a semester in Venezuela one time, directing a college semester program based in Merida and traveling around. It's beautiful country, though much afflicted of late, as you know firsthand. Sending you my best!

Glad i got recommended this by the algorithm; interested in learning more about these techniques, looking forward to the second video. Wouldn't mind if it was a tad bit longer!

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! If you like this kind of thing there is a whole playlist of them if you go directly to my RU-vid page ("The Fiction Chronicles"). Will be updating this playlist periodically with new ones. I've also posted some longer videos if you really want to get in depth. Thanks again for your interest!

I would love to hear what you thought about the prologue of A Dance With Dragons as well. It is one of my favorite chapters in the entire series and I feel it shares many of the same qualities you mentioned here. It's from the perspective of a character we'd seen only from Jon's eyes in a few chapters, (and grown to despise him despite how short his time was on paper) yet George writes all his grotesque thoughts and introspections in such a human and believable manner we end up having a sense of familiarity with his character as if we'd known him for a much longer time, all within the span of fifteen or so pages. The lonliness, dread, existentialism, and death, is all so beautifully written that I'm sitting here still thinking about it (and writing this comment).
