There are main areas to concentrate on when starting out with Linux. Learn these to jump start your path towards becoming an entry level or junior system administrator. At first, don't waste your time going through a certification book and learning every command. There's one thing you need which applies to almost eveything in life.
I have 9 years experience being an AIX sys admin and 11 years experience being a Linux sys admin. I started out (unknowingly) with what I talk about in the video. So it does work!

Thanks for this. got my first job in IT a year ago. But have more than a fountaional knowlwedge from 3 years of homelab experience. You have given me so much more confidence to push forward at my currrent workplace to get those skills logged on my CV (resume) and push for a promotion. Thanks again!

That is great! A homelab is invaluable to developing new skills and maintaining the old. I'm glad this video helped you, that makes creating these all worth it.

This is my dream job. I struggle with showcasing my home lab experience on my resume, though. On another note, I just passed the Linux Essentials exam this morning, now onto LPIC 1!

Does the sysadmin do all of the security of the computer systems , or theres another assistant thats focused on security?@@SteeleTech77

Sys admins would handle system security. The cyber security team would do all the auditing and hand off any holes/issues to the sys admins.

Thank you for your insight! I'm not sure how RU-vid suggested your video, but I am grateful that it did. I dabble in Linux and am looking to become an AIX (UNIX) engineer. But, I am not comfortable in jumping straight into certification unless I get more hands-on experience. Although I had a good idea where to start on system administration, this is a great 'real world' explanation of what you really need to know to do 90% of the work.

Thank you for the feedback! The Unix world can seem overwhelming, but the operating system is so solid most of the day-to-day administration is maintenance.

I wouldn't say its that easy since almost 70 to 80 percent of the Linux Sysadmin jobs out there is in the DoD sector that often requires a Secrete or Top Secrete Clearance. You may find a few Red Hat jobs in finance and banks but no that many of those jobs exists. Most sysadmin jobs out there are mixed Windows and Linux environment. With more and more companies moving more to the cloud that less Linux Sysadmin jobs. DevOps Engineers, SRE Engineers and Cloud Engineers are the modern sysadmins today. Lots of Linux is used in the Cloud.

All valid points! The typical Linux Sys Admin is morphing into other job titles, however the Linux experience itself is still very valuable. Not everything is a SaaS solution so being a Linux admin, even in your own Homelab, is a pathway to DevOps. Like you said, "lots of Linux is used in the cloud." Thanks for your thoughts on this topic.

@@SteeleTech77 Yeah plus a lot of automation is used today esp Ansible and Python. I use the SaltStack in my role as a Sr. Desktop Support Tech and RHEL Workstation Admin which is similar to Ansible, Puppet and Chef. Linux is a foundational skill set but you have to know a lot more than just Linux these days esp Kubernetes and Containers, Virtualization, DevOps tools as well as Generative A.I.

No offence but unless you're a convicted felon, security clearance is extremely easy to get, you literally just have to apply......
@eman0828
@eman0828 3 месяца назад
@@sportbikeguy9875 You have get sponsored and takes close to a year to be granted one after a lengthy investigation. Plus most Linux Sysadmin roles are asking with "Active Clearances" to fill the role right away. I work in the Defense industry hense why I work with Red Hat.

Apache server, letsencrypt, Kuma or some type of network monitoring, automating tasks using shell scripting. I would start wherever you are most interested!

I'm going after my RHCSA and then RHCE. Brand new in chasing the certs, but been a hobbyist for 4 years. Do you think having chatGPT create practice tickets is a good way to learn?
@SteeleTech77
@SteeleTech77 2 месяца назад
Wow, nice! Red Hat certifications carry a lot of weight. I never thought of using ChatGPT to create scenarios, I'll have to test it out and see how that works. You'll always get incorrect responses no matter what resource, but make sure the AI is not steering you in the wrong direction.

I was planning on doing just that. Got my raspberry pi 5 the other day. Got a Terraria (game) server running on a raspberry pi 400. Was fun to install 🙂 Learned a lot and I want to learn more.

Nice! There is so much you can do with raspberry pis. Fun projects are a great way to learn and there is motivation to enjoy all the hard work at the end.

I am very insterested in Debian as a server for a home lab but I am looking for tutorials on how to setup and use it?
@SteeleTech77
@SteeleTech77 2 месяца назад
There are lots of tutorials on installing Debian. Debian (which includes flavors of Debian) is one of the most popular, especially for servers, so there is plenty of info out there. Debian itself does not include newer packages but is rock solid.

I am more or less already familiar with 6 key points that you mentioned but one thing really slows me down is coding, do you code a lot other than Bash or Shell script?
@SteeleTech77
@SteeleTech77 3 месяца назад
Bash and python are what we use most in our environment. Bash for server maintenance/automation and python for managing switches. ChatGPT can really come in handy for solving a logic puzzle or generating code. It's not always 100%, but it will quickly help you get back on track. Spend more time in the logic and how to solve problems vs learning syntax. Of course each environment is different when it comes to scripting needs and some rely on it more than others.

Is Linux Sys admin still relevant in 2024? I thought everyone was moving to DevOps and Cloud Computing
@SteeleTech77
@SteeleTech77 3 месяца назад
Still very relevant! Doing a job search online produces plenty of results. Even full cloud shops would hire sys admins for managing the OS (mostly large companies that can afford a large staff with specific duties).
