Olivia Newton John was, to all intents and purposes, Australian ... but she was actually BORN on ENGLISH soil, in Cambridge ..... her family left England for Australia when she was just five years old.

Judith Durham, the lead singer, had a fabulous voice, and she moved to a career in jazz singing, which she loved, after she left The Seekers. Judith suffered from a chronic lung condition that she had since being a young child. Eventually she died from it this year. What a trooper she was! You must hear the group sing, "I Am Australian". Even Americans do the patriotic hand on the heart to this one!

I’m British and the Seekers were on the radio all the time. They had many hits. Great group, with a folk/pop sound. Judy is a fantastic singer with a woman’s voice instead of today’s “little girl” generic voices. The Carnival is Over is another good one.

The music industry is specifically targeted to girls of fourteen or so, and the manufactured stars are picked so their target audience will identify with them. After they reach a certain point they’re audience turns into cultists! What’s worse, there’s no room for a Laura Nyro, a Grace Slick, a Chryssie Hynde or a Tina Turner.

If you care to dive in for a bit longer reaction, check out their performances of their biggest hit, 'Georgy Girl.' plus the iconic 'Waltzing Matilda' and what many feel should be the Aussie's national anthem, 'I Am Australian,' written by group member Bruce Woodley. They sang the three songs at the 1994 national football final in Melbourne, 30 years after this video you've just watched. Judith never lost her voice, even well into her 70s. Although it's difficult for those who weren't there to believe, for a short time during late 1965 and early 1966 the popularity of this singing quartet from Australia was sufficient to rival the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. The Seekers were at the head of the British Invasion's acoustic folk-rock division, right there with Peter & Gordon and Chad & Jeremy and more successful than either -- they scored a string of number one hits in England and Top Ten successes in the U.S. that lasted into 1967, two years later than most of the rest of the British exports to America. You must play their biggest hit GEORGY GIRL and Oscar nominated. The Seekers were the most successful group, at the time to come out of Australia. In a chance meeting years later, Maurice Gibb ran into Judith Durham and told her that the Bee Gees had tried desperately to get her group to record MASSACHUSETTS which the Bee Gees then took to great success.

The Seekers in their heyday shared the pop charts in Britain with both the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, often displacing them for the number one spot in the the top fourty hit parade for that week. Later in their career one of the band penned the song "I am Australian" which is now a popular unofficial Australian anthem. The Seekers reformed in the early 2000s and played that at the AFL Grand Final at the MCG in Melbourne Australia. This is one of the prime sporting events in the world and boasts about 100,000 spectators at the stadium. At the height of their success they played to a crowd of over 200,000 people at an outdoor concert in Australia, which I believe is still a record concert crowd for the Southern hemisphere.

They were a very beautiful group originating in the sixties but not only released amazing songs that also outsold the Beatles and Stones at times. Judith had the voice of an angel and the definition of talent yet unlike today she never once considered herself above anyone. Sadly missed in people these days.

This is one of the all time great Pop/Folk songs. Judith Durham is superb here, with her sublime lead vocals, riding about an octave above the others - to create a beautiful ethereal feel to the song. The baseline guitars and banjo lay a beautiful instrumental baseline to the song. FTR, I am a retired, professional music critic with 45+ years experience and 60s Pop/Folk music doesn't get much better than this song. 😁👍

The seekers were a very good folk/pop band from Australia. In fact, I think they were the first Australian group that had success here in the United States. "I'll Never Find Another You" was their very first top 10 hit and an excellent song. You both said you would like to hear other songs from them. I have the perfect suggestion. Please react to The Seekers "Georgy Girl". It is my favorite song from them and it was also their biggest hit. "Georgy Girl" is such a happy, feel-good song. I think you will both love it.

The Seekers were the sound of my childhood, and were absolutely HUGE in the day (knocking off both Beatles and Rolling Stones from number one on the charts). Absolutely listen to more - Georgy Girl, The Carnival is over, Morningtown Ride - so many great songs. Judith Durham had such a clear, pitch perfect voice, even at age 70 at their fair well concert a few years ago she sounds exactly as she did in her 20s. Much loved and sadly missed.

I love The Seekers! They didnt need any autotune or loud singing (some performers when they sing i prefer to call it screeching or yelling) or any loud music of any kind. Just 2 guitars, a bass, and 4 wonderful singers with beautiful harmony. Just pure bliss!

I can remember back then as a young teenager they were a group you heard plenty of on the radio, here in Australia but you never admitted listening to them. They were not cool. However now in my later life I have discovered more of their songs and enjoy them. Judith had a very good voice right up until her passing. RIP. ❤️🤘🎸🇦🇺

If I remember correctly, this was them reenacting the original recording for a TV special. That's the reason for the behind-the-scenes feel of it. The bass player, Athol Guy, was known for those hornrims for many years.

The Seekers went for a trip to the UK where they met Tom Springfield (brother of Dusty). He wrote many of the legendary songs of The Seekers. This was also the start of their International succes.

Their song "Georgy Girl" was the most popular band song at football games when I was in school in early 70s. It was a bit old by then, but it had a great lasting effect. I really like the unique blend of mother/daughter perspective that you two bring. 😀

Loved the Seekers - such beautiful, easy harmonies and Judith's voice is the calibre of Karen Carpenter - that strong, crystal clear, pitch perfect tone. Judith has just past this year and was so sad. She did not have the easiest of lives, but her voice lives on. The Carnival Is Over was my favourite Seekers song.

The amazing thing about the Seekers is that after breaking up many years ago, they got together and were singing together 50 years later...and they sounded just as good. This song was written especially for them by Tom Springfield, the older brother of Dusty Springfield, who was also a fabulous singer. The Seekers are most familiar to Americans for "Georgy Girl", but they sounded fabulous no matter what song they sung.

The Seekers were making hits around the time of Peter, Paul and Mary right up to the last few years. They were big in the UK as well as here in Australia. This clip is in remarkable condition seeing it is 58 years old. 👍🤗

Lucky that this recreation of the 1964 recording session was made in 1968 of professional standard film. This was done for a TV special/documentary that had huge ratings when shown in Australia in 1968. The whole near hour long show is on RU-vid, so the print or negative survived in good condition. Unlike reused video tape that deteriorated with age and was much lower resolution than the best film until about the nineties.

Love the way you ladies bounce reactions between one another. I'm 73yo now and consider myself musically blessed to have grown up in the 60s and 70s. We had some great soul artists back then, totally different from what the kids of today call soul. Might I suggest you listen to the following, Misty Blue by Dorothy Moore or Try A Little Tenderness by Otis Redding or anything by Aretha Franklin

Fast forward 50 years from 1964 to 2014 and The Seekers did a Farewell Tour, in which Judith Durham was not well, but still wanted to do the tour. Bruce Woodley wrote I Am Australian, which was another adopted anthem of Australia. In this performance of I Am Australian, Judith needed a stool to support her on stage due to her health. I was so lucky to sit next to and talk to Judith at a jazz club in Melbourne in the 90s .. She was such a sweet and classy lady .. There are so many great songs to chose from with The Seekers, check out The Carnival Is Over, Island If Dreams, A World Of Our Own to name a few. They were around a little before my time (I showed up in ‘71?lol) but my parents were into them and I do recall them playing albums from The Seekers when my brother and I were very young, in particular The Seekers recorded a beautiful children’s song called Morningtown Ride which is beautiful, I’d I’ve to see you react to that because an abiding memory from when we were little was mom playing that to send us off to sleep 😊

Sorry I'm so late to the party, but I just saw your reaction. I agree that the Seekers are an easy listening group that provides excellent harmony. If you like them, then I think that you would also enjoy Peter, Paul and Mary and the Association.

Another great reaction. I think you've had a great idea to have two generations introducing music to one another as well as sharing hearing new music for the first time. As something a bit different, may I suggest Misty Mountains by Peter Hollens and Tim Foust. There are no instruments, just human voices. I've not seen or heard anyone react to this other than in astonished enjoyment, including me.😊😊

My absolute favourite is the carnival is over Judith Drummond wonderful voice from a time in my life when I couldn't be any happier I must have been about twenty years old I love my music and there was a lot of really great talent about in the sixtees and seventees

This song was written by Tom Springfield, brother of Dusty Springfield who was a big star in the UK (and had hits in the US and Australia). He also wrote The Carnival is Over, another big hit for The Seekers, based on an old Russian folk song. The Seekers were virtually unknown when they left Australia working as entertainers on a ship to the UK. This song gave them almost instant celebrity. Try The Carnival is Over, Georgy Girl or I am Australian. They were still doing gigs, playing and singing beautifully, until Judith's sad passing within a week of Olivia's death.
