The Seestar S50 Makes Astrophotography Easy 

It's still above what I can afford right now but I really appreciate what this company has done to bring this hobby to a level that is more affordable with lower learning curve. Maybe next year! Thanks for this review :D

About 2 years ago I found your channel, and you made me fall in love with astrophotography and last month I got the Seestar s50, its amazing for a noob to the hobbie. Great content and thanks for introducing me to Astrophotography.

The Seestar is amazing, I’ve owned one for a week and already finished a goal to image every Messier open cluster I can reasonably get from my location, it’s an absolute gem

It's mildly amusing how many people this thing seems to annoy simply because it exists. 😂

It's awesome to see these companies make astrophotography accessible to people that don't want to buy $3,000 mounts.

I have all sorts of equipment and, due to getting older, had planned to use my C6 and lightweight EQ3 mount as my old age gear. This has supplanted that. I found the wifi range excellent as I could pick it up anywhere in my house including the basement when the Seestar was in the front yard. It finds the sun on its own quicker than I could. Now I can quickly and easily follow sunspots. Image quality surprising. Updates like the planetary and comet mode keep coming. Great review Trevor.

Absolutely love my SeeStar, so great just to stick outside and be imaging in minutes… and the regular software updates are exciting too!

I was at a local park this morning with some of my buddies from the Astronomy club and we wanted to take a look at some of the solar activity. I have a Celestron 8 inch refractor and people are in all when they see the size of it and all of the attachments, and so on and so forth, my buddy brought out his Seestar , and I am so envious. It’s unbelievable.

Fun and very accurate review. I pre-ordered my Seestar and finally got it 5 months later. For $399, this is a wonderful scope. I foresee new models with advanced optics and cameras. I took this one on a camping trip in Gold Butte National Monument and enjoyed some nice EAA even though the wind and near freezing temperatures kept us near the campfire.

Thanks for the review. A good alternative for people who don't want to get too deep into the technical side of things, but are still interested in taking a few, nice and usable shots.

I just got my seestar yesterday and I am amazed. This is really a piece of art. So much Astro Gear in one small pack. It is ridiculously easy to use. I cannot wait when they to come out with a bigger aperture. I believe they are testing the water for the next generation of Astrographs, and I believe it's AMAZING.

Always felt astrophotography is out my budget having to need a good tripod, telephoto lens and a tracker to just get started This looks a great entry point into the hobby!

Just got mine the other day a big tip for anyone wanting the most out of this and wants the best Quality image definitely save each individual exposure and stack them on pc and go through post processing.

Your videos are amazing. My work is 360. Always been a stary eyed guy with telescopes. I’m working with a DSLR and learning from your videos. I did purchase the Seestar and I really think it’s helpful. Results are really cool but it leads me into more which I think is natural. I just have to say you made a video at a dark location by yourself and your commentary was really…touching to me. I can relate I guess. Thank you

FINALLY ASTROBACKYARD SEESTAR REVIEW

Just ordered one. I don't live in Canada (I live in a pretty warm climate really), but in the winter, I'm busy with job, side hustle and it's cold - too much effort to drag out the "real" rig, set up, shoot the calibration frames and light frames, etc. I'm so excited to have something that lets me continue to look at space from my backyard without all the effort.

Got it a few months ago. I've been doing Astrophoto on and off for about 30 years. This little scope is great fun and captures great images (bortle 5). Oh, while I'm at it, I don't need to freeze my butt outside to enjoy it! Thanks for your review!

Thanks, Trevor, this was really helpful! Not being able to drive means I have to rely on my wife or friends to help me haul my current setup if I want to take it somewhere other than the backyard. With the SeeStar I can easily take it anywhere on my electric scooter or out camping without taking up lots of space!

My Seestar S50 arrived in early November. I've been able to use it a few times, but living in Western Washington State, there have been a lot of clouds. I have a NexStar Evolution EdgeHD 8" with the Starsense Autoguider camera, an ASI385MC and an HP laptop. Total cost is just north of $5,000 USD. The Seestar runs circles around what I have been able to do with a set up that costs 10 times as much. My experience has been just a little different from yours. I'm able to connect to it from 30 feet away, through a wall. I love it.

I’ve been a visual observer my whole life but this is pretty cool . Going to look more into this, and possibly purchase one of these in the future. Nice demo.

That looks fun! In doing visual astronomy some years ago I found that while a huge scope will show you more that does not mean you cant have a great night out with a small one too.

I often tell myself that astrophotography will be one of the things I will venture on when I retire (or close to retiring) which is like in 30 years :D I know astrophotography is no joke and I have very high regards to those who share their talents and time for us (non-astro folks) to see the wonders of the universe (or at least those that we can see). But with this, I am now having more hope of doing it in. Its compact size and the premise of it being "bring outside, select a subject, and wait"-kind-of-tech is very appealing to me! I really do not have that knowledge nor the time to really delve into the hardcore aspects astrophotography and this is not needed here (with this product).

I preordered one and it is the awesomest run and gun set up ever! For the price of my star adventurer 2i you get soooooo much more

Great review Trevor. Your reaction as Andromeda was being revealed 10 seconds at a time, was exactly my reaction. Holy Crap was the expression I used. This smart telescope is amazing. I will be using it at public outreach sessions to help explain why everything looks like a grey smudge in a big scope visually, while you see colours in the Seestar.

Nice review. We’re loving ours especially in station mode to use our home WiFi. Also added lukomatico’s external filter holders for moon and solar with a white filter. We can do more with this than my vespera. Clear skies

i think this is a perfect setup for this, specially for when i dont have time to build my current setup ( which is most of the times ). So this compares to my current gear as my phone camera compares to my dslr, is almost always available and ready, that will make me use it much more i believe.

A great scope for beginners

I ordered a SeeStar S50 about a week ago. It’s on back order though and the anticipation is killing me

I wanted this first before falling down the rabbit hole. Well, still not in stock in Canada, so ended up upgrading 60D to 2600MC Pro (backordered, go figure) and an Askar V (from dusty c90 mak) with L-extreme and L-Pro filters, and an asiair plus. I've gone too far, and just said what the heck, just get the EAF too. Weakest link is the mount (az gti eq mod). Owning the new goodies for about 3 weeks. I only got one night of 1.5hrs of clear skies! EAF is SPOT ON! Impressed... Managed to only get 21mins, 3 mins exposure of M31 on Askar V 80mm with reducer. Results blew my mind! Slewed to horsehead nebula and then right before I can see the first image, the clouds came back and wrecked it. Kinda went off topic here but been watching this channel since I got into astrophotography, around late summer. I may end up just building my own harmonic mount or at least attempt it. That's the only thing that I can possibly DIY for astrophotography to save a few grand and use it towards a mono camera. lol I was ready to dish out for an AM5 of a HAE29 but it's on hold until I figure out this DIY route and it's quite interesting to learn but frustrating at the same time.

Its a cool tech piece for sure, but I still oddly love piecing my rig together. Its more satisfaction in end for me.

Excellent video, as always. I’m a new convert to smart scopes with a Vespera 2 and a Celestron Origin on order. These things make me wonder why all scopes don’t have dew heaters built in, and auto-focusers. And why all go-to mounts don’t have plate-solving built in. Early days. . .it reminds me of when we geeks would buy disk drives and motherboards and build our own PCs. Now companies are giving us the whole package, just like Apple and Dell did. I can’t wait for a smart scope on a harmonic mount!

Awesome concept, Good for outreach, Schools and Noobs and is a good introduction into the hobby, however like the iphones they suffer from obsolescence very quickly.

I was on the fence, but after your review, I purchased (with your link!). I just bought a new setup (RedCat 51, ASI533, AM5, etc) and haven't used it yet. It's complicated, intimidating, and just a little scary. I think the S50 will be a good step. I can see myself using the S50 for some targets and then use that as inspiration for the larger setup and better light. Love your channel!

I think for me something like seestar would make me feel like im not the one taking the images simply because i just put it down and its ready and i dont actually have to do anything myself so im thinking ¨Am i actually the one taking the image¨ when comparing to using a skywatcher 2i which i have to manually find the target with and everything so it feels like im the one actually doing so mething but this is still really really cool :D

This is prob the future of home astronomy. If you're not insistent on true visual, you're getting the performance of a 20+" dob in a tiny fraction of price, trouble, portability. Its revolutionary, thanks for the great vid.

Excellent description of the scope. He picked out all of the finest features of the scope and even mentioned the two real negatives,, no planets and Andromeda is too big. But don't for one minute think he is not an excellent salesman. He just so happens to be a fairly honest one. He is so good at what he does. I have been watching him for years and have rarely disagreed with him. I will keep referring to his videos when I want a second opinion.

Great video. Easy to use and post process the images to get some really nice pictures. Good for when you don't have the time, energy or great sky to set up a more complex astro scope. Let us know how you make out with the new planetary feature.

I think this - and small, portable devices like it - are good for getting more people into astronomy/astrophotography. It's not something I would buy as I would probably tire of it really quick, but I reckon it would be awesome for schools, outreach or for people who want an easy way to see "what all the fuzz is about".

Can't wait to see what the next model is like. Maybe they'll have a version with a better camera.

This thing is the future of AP, I just ordered one, just checking out the Cloudy Nights reviews on this thing is amazing for $500 bucks, seems to really perform good at dark sky sites, I can really dig the fact I can use this thing from comfort of my bedroom, set it up on the my roof, easy to conceal around the house, makes astronomy fun again, The tedious task of dragging around my heavy EQ mount, with large scope gets to be a drag, I cant wait till ZWO comes out with the S200 super duper model, with a 12MP camera, I will sell all my other equipment., nah, I will keep my Celestron Edge 8, ES 127mm Apo, Meade 80mm triplet and 10" Schmidt Cassegrain. 😃

Hey Trevor, good review!!! The scope here in Australia is $899, so whilst a but more than you have to pay it's still not too dear. Might pick one up for club nights and outreach. Also be good just for a quick grab n go scope!!

I just gotta giggle at @2:09 with the app improperly labeling the moon phase. It would be correct for a southern hemisphere view but the location is Canada and the image of the moon is from the northern perspective.

This is much better than I've ever expected. When I first heard about the seestar I honestly thought it's a joke. No way a sensor that size can produce anything decent. Turns out I was wrong. Though personally I cannot accept buying a telescope I cannot look through with my eye. But I totally understand, for most people seeing a faint blob of light is less than exciting, assuming they can find or see it at all. And at half a grand, it's pretty good value

Ok now I’m ready to go out tonight with my GTi tracker and Nikon DSLR! Problem is, bright near full moon and clouds. Ugh! I’ll wait ten days or so… question, I have a Ha modified camera. I’m in Bortle 6 or 7 but am only a relatively short drive to Bortle 4.5 or so. I also have a Astro MS (Multisprectra) Clip In Filter From STC Optics. Do I need to use that along with a LiPo filter or not? Actually, since I’m using a Ha modified camera, do I even need to use the clip in filter? My principal Astro subjects are M42, M31. Thanks!

Hi - great video as always. Have watched a lot. Question for you: with my SeeStar, if I goto Atlas and the magnifying glass and puck my own object it goes back to Atlas screen and says , goto’ing, centering, focusing, shooting.. but DOES NOT go the the capture screen (with red button on bottom). Do you know how to get this to work correctly? Thank You

I set up my regular rig (Eq6R+ 6" Newt) and tried imaging. Clouds roll in as usual. Waited an hour, clouds just won't leave. Broke down the gear; scope goes inside, cover goes back on the mount. 30 minutes later- as usual with my luck - the star come out, clear skies. I had desire to do the whole ceremony again with the Newt and cables. I took the Seestar out, aimed at Rosette Nebula, started imaging. The whole procedure took about 5 minutes, 3 minutes of it just me messing with the tripod. Is it gonna be good as my big scope? Nope! I know that, but why the heck not image if I can get it running in 5 minutes, right?

This thing is really cool, the only downside for me personally is the low resolution sensor of 2.1 MP. If they manage to put in a higher resolution sensor for a similar price point in the future I might be tempted to buy one.
