I just now subscribed. I'm age 21 and did gymnastics for 14 years through age 18. From age 13 I was more or less raising myself and needed to make money for gymnastics academy fees. And that got me into helping with remodeling for a property management company. I stuck with the job when I could. I got into full time construction at age 20 and love it. I see in this video a lot of "American" ways of doing the drywalling. I love your remodeling projects. Wish I could be there to help.

Living in Canada, and enjoying stone architecture, I can totally agree about insulation. It would be nice to have bare stone walls, but in Winter, it would literally kill people. They would be Canuck-sicles. The place looks great. Enjoying the short update videos.

Piggybacking on your comment - I live in Scotland and it’s a pretty dumb take to suggest that he should have left the walls bare. Not only would it be unliveable but to try and heat the place would be suuuper expensive. One of the biggest energy efficiency challenges in the U.K. is that so many houses here are really old and not properly insulated but installing adequate new insulation is expensive and would require destroying some period features (old fireplaces or plasterwork cornicing). It’s a big task but totally essential to meet carbon reduction goals. By taking two old properties and renovating them to modern liveable standards, George is actually helping contribute to environmental efficiency in Scotland 💙

Great work as always, George! And yes, having been to Scotland a number of times, and also having lived in the North of Ireland right across the way, I can attest to its being very COLD and DAMP many months out of the year! The idea of leaving the walls plain rock and not insulating -- I'm shivering at the very thought! Yikes. That would have led to black mold, illness, condensation, hypothermia -- you name it. Of Course you have to insulate! If there is one small space somewhere in the house where you can leave the rocks showing, that would be great, but only as a small design feature -- not as a way to live! Holy geez. And I love the idea of the 10-hour video showing the whole process. Nice one! 😊👍 Keep up the great work!

Whatever length of video you decide to put out will be appreciated and enjoyed by tons of us and hopefully will help with that scary tax bill. Amazing transformation seen here from dark and gloomy to light & bright with plasterboard finish, masses of natural light and new appropriate white double glazed French/patio doors. The new rigid insulation will keep the interior warm in winter and cool in summer, helps with acoustics and sound insulation too, energy is expensive in Britain, winters can be long and damp, so high performance insulation is worthwhile and essential.

Hey George I'm really enjoying this series and the amazing craftsmanship of Sean-Paul, he is such a highly skilled individual and looks so natural in every task. I can't wait to see the final product :) Something to think about.. perhaps this is different and very specific to the town your from and the research you've done, but from my experience 'holiday lets' or AirBnB generally make significantly less profit that long term letting. I previously worked as a tax accountant, completing tax returns for many different people who owned more than one property. I would say that the running costs of short term letting often ate significantly into profits in most instances, and people who let properties long term made more money with a lot less faff. I think the initial cost of becoming a registered landlord and preparing the house for long term rental may be expensive (and may not be suitable for your current timeframe with taxes due at the end of January) but I think this may be worth considering for longer term... just a thought and sorry for the boring financial comment lol looking forward to your next video

One negative about long term letting is possibly standing by as someone abuses your property. Not all renters are conscientious and considerate when it comes to keeping clean & tidy. Short term seems less risky to the interior of the house. It’s hard to imagine strangers being careless but it’s a thing.
@nicolad8822
@nicolad8822 8 месяцев назад
I can see where you are coming from. With holiday lets you do need to be prepared to pay to fully equip a place, do quick turnaround cleans, be on hand to respond to enquiries and problems which can get irksome. I guess it depends on what the monthly rental could be versus short term lets. I am guessing he will get a lot of interest from followers. I don’t like Air BnB, if were me I would use one of the more traditional style booking companies if I wanted an intermediary. And maybe a minimum stay, definitely no 1 night jobs.

Good to see the progress being made with this project. It's really cool that you get on with your brother well enough that you would consider going into this arrangement with him. Having lived in a home during a major renovation, I can't recommend staying in your new home until the work is complete. You truly deserve all the growth and support you get, and I hope more and more comes your way. Thanks for being my hit of wholesome. ✌🏻x

I love stone…. on the outside. It’s certainly better to be warm and cosy and to have straight walls for all the cabinets etc.

Hey George, not entirely sure of the tax differences between England and Scotland, but I would definitely recommend you speaking to a tax advisor about setting up a LTD Co for your RU-vid business… it’s really not efficient to be taking your income all in your personal name. Most RU-vidrs start that way, but notice significant improvements when they divert at your financial stage.

Videos like this make my heart ache. To think a family several hundred years ago loved this home and once again it's being lived in and loved. They say places take on the personality of those who live there and I can't wait to see how you and the house get on

George the renovation is beautiful. Love all the natural light and the big French doors. What was in the large alcove on the right? Will that be a book case or TV area, etc. Cannot wait for you to decorate and move in. I think Junior will need a cat walk up in the skylights. ha ha I'm very proud of you. Your money. Your life. Your dream. Block the naysayers.

What a great transformation! It is now so bright and light. There will always be someone to criticize. As someone who has lived in colder climate, Insulations is vital.

As a person living in a hot climate I can attest to needing insulation on masonry walls. I have an old exposed brick wall in my dining room & thought it’d be “cool” to leave it uncovered so I took the insulation off! It gets morning sunlight only but it heats up so much that it then continues to radiate heat for the rest of the day! In 100 degree Fahrenheit climate, it’s like living next to a bakery! So yeah, I’m voting for insulation next time 😢

Great editing on the video, loved seeing the progress on your place. Can't wait to see it finished! You've chosen a really good contractor. Junior could make a cameo on every video and I wouldn't mind, just sayin'...

i love the transparency :) as a home owner and hoping to own and renovate my own house in the future...cost is a huge factor. Having a family member to share the cost with and be able to operate a rental space is almost essential! There's a difference between offering a rental that was a home and property for yourself and the massive companies that buy and rent out units in apartment buildings for big profits...the original spirit of airbnb was to rent out a 'home'. a lived in space where care and hard work has been put in :) its wonderful that you can do this in your home town as well.

Fantastic watching real tradespersons at work. Great to see that Sean-Paul is still working with a prior apprentice and has a new one learning valuable skills. The transformation process is great and you're capturing it perfectly. Thanks George !!

About the "character of stone walls" criticism. I lived in a house in Scotland with an exposed stone wall and it was ASTRONOMICALLY EXPENSIVE to heat -- and was still damp and cold. And that was one stone wall, not the whole house. You did right to insulate and cover them. Looks great too.

I'm from Ireland and can confirm this insulation is essential, we have to do it in this part of the world to survive the harsh winters we get which are only getting worse with climate change, a problem that this insulation helps to resolve by requiring less energy to heat. No point protecting these beautiful walls if the planet it uninhabitable to enjoy them! Fair play George you're smashing it already in life! 👏

I'm looking forward to the 10-hour video. I enjoy putting on a train ride video with sounds when I am having difficulty with my anxiety. I will have a daughter soon, and I would love to show her calming home improvement videos to distract her when she isn't sure why she's upset (of course after we've ruled out sleepy, hungry, gassy, and any other of the dwarves) and to expose her to practical skills that she can do, someday. My dad drove me past a hospital housing complex on the way to daycare and called them "house bones". I would check out the progress each day. My dad worked for a power tool company and got me involved in furniture assembly at a young age. I intend to do similarly with my daughter, but probably with a touch more safety involved.
