I’m a 70 yr old woman and I regret all the time I spent when I was younger worrying and feeling bad about my thin thighs and knobbly knees. I failed to see my good points. 5’ 8 , slim and blonde with v long legs, which I didn’t appreciate. Please Don’t rubbish yourself , it achieves nothing. You are a wonderful man in so many ways. 👍🏻

I love the fireplaces! I hope you will keep them even if you don't use them. They add so much charm to a room. I think taking the closet out of your office makes sense. I would keep the window and am interested to hear what others think but the great part about having your own house is doing what you like!

Your biggest health risk at the moment is not using appropriately sized step ladders for the job. You can be standing on an upside down bucket and fall breaking your back. This is no joke. Stop unnecessarily risking injury because your being lazy about your safety. Also, use that giant garbage bag as you go to toss as much debris in as you can rather than throwing every last thing on the floor first. Clean up will go much faster. Having an open fireplace in the room might be attractive but it will be a source of cold and hot air probably in part why it was sealed off. Don't underestimate the cost of bringing an old hidden fireplace up to code. You become a true homeowner when you start doing upgrades and maintenance yourself. Congrats!!!!!

I so enjoy your videos. I am 70 years old and sometimes feel that I have missed my learning curve. Right now I am recovering from 3 intense back surgeries so being able to live my “normal” life is impossible. I renewed my Skillshare app so that I could broaden my horizons and not feel like I had passed by my time in life to learn new skills and develop exciting interests. The sledge hammer looks like fun! Go, George, go! Do some hammering for me.

I think many people have had that "oh f*ck" moment in a project when you get into the groove of getting things done. Plus, you never know what's behind a wall until you put a hole in it. Its such a big step to learn a new skill. It'll feel rough in the beginning as everything is a new experience. Soon you'll be a pro!

Cool! I remember seeing & wondering about that tiny window from the exterior/rooftop in your video about replacing the hall skylights. Before blocking off an exterior light source (granted it's small) --just think on it for a bit before you make a decision. There are loads of ways to deal with it creatively, including blocking it off, of course. Quirkiness & charm are no bad thing. 😊

Mistakes happen to professionals also. No big deal, they can be repaired.

I think the little window is very charming and it doesn’t take up a lot of space so I don’t know you’d be getting a much benefit from boarding it over and it adds charm even if it’s inside the closet! I am all for a good window, but its a very small window and I dont think you will miss it. If you are building storage over it, I would ask your builder friend about ventilation requirements for that before you board it up. Btw, most of us have arms of all shapes and sizes. You can do many creative things with them that will make the place look stunning and not stale and institutionalise and those arms of yours will be pumping guns by the time you finish your project. George. When I first saw you doing this, before I even clicked on the full video, I thought - 'George! Are you nuts?!'. But then when I heard your reasoning as to why you wanted to do this - you were in a slump, and felt like you weren't learning or growing from what you were doing. Now i think you're brilliant! So from nuts to brilliant within a few minutes. 🤗. I get that way more often than I like (slump), and I found that if I get involved in projects, those projects take me out of or away from my slump while I'm working. Good for you George, jumping in and finding parts of the renovation you can do yourself. Save money, learn new skills and build your confidence, very smart move. Demolition is definitely a good place to start, any good contractor would appreciate a homeowner who is willing to pitch in and do manual labor and cleaning up the job site, and it saves you paying top dollar for sweeping up and taking out the debris. Watch other RU-vid videos for learning more about renovation. I’m in America so it’s different here, we don’t have many stone cottages. But I have noticed that European and UK builders are building with wood stud walls, insulation and drywall like we do here so possibly watching American builders would also be worthwhile. All that to say, you’re doing all right, get in there and try new things. You’re a kind and honest soul we can see that, we enjoy coming along with your adventures, thanks for sharing. It's inspiring to see you dive in a project like this :) I would be afraid out of my pants to try to do something like this. Please share all the mistakes it really helps me put things in perspective because when I'm doing something and mess it up I feel like I'm the only one that makes mistakes. It's refreshing to see you are not oversweating on mistakes. It would be awesome if you figure out how to utilize the space in the old fireplaces. Where I'm from only internal insulation is not recomended due to damp in the walls inside the insulation. We practice mainly external insulation. But I guess this is not something that's possible in UK, especially on old building to keep their facades original.

Put a built-in unit right up to the window. You won't gain much storage space by gong higher and a little window would add a lot of charm, and of course, needed light to a dark corner. Just my 2 cents.

Leaving that window will allow for cross ventilaton since the other window is on the wall directly opposite. People forget that a really successful space accounts for space, air and light, not just space.

The 'little window' in the closet: Have the frame Routered,and add a 2nd pain of glass for insulatiion,and let natural light in the closet. The fireplaces are your 'damp'.I did say, "Spray in foam would save you Allot" and now you'll pay for walls too,but some did need the work.Good job George.You're opening the rooms to not only look and feel larger,but they'll Be larger.

Keep the window and leave the walls and roof timbers exposed it’s hard work but so worth it. I am in the process of revealing my Yorkshire stone internal walls and 200 year old roof with railway sleepers the mess is horrendous but every time I reveal another feature including a surprise window I feel a sense of achievement.

Hi. I would opt for the storage, instead of the window. When you consider the small amount of light the window provides, storage seems a better option. I’m crazy about your channel, George…I learn so much, and I enjoy your sense of humor and philosophy of life.

You wanted to have a go so you did. You have the added disadvantage as you film yourself where most of us will never do. I heartily agree with not touching the electrics and plumbing. The holes you made can be easily fixed and it will never be seen again. Yes, I’ve done the same. Be cautious and careful is the best way to go. Don’t talk yourself down please. You can do it. It looks as if you have leaks on the back of the wall you took down by the water marks. Please check for them or your work will be for naught. We are all different in our body shapes. Wow! For someone with no experience and who’s also quite a slight chap ..... you did a HUGE amount of demolition! I know from experience how heavy all that stuff is (apart from the insulation board) ....... hope you’re not as achey as me after that too (just spent half a day shifting half a hundredweight of aggregate, I ache in places I didn’t know I could😆 .... a very well done and a plea to leave the fireplaces as features - and to say you can never have too many windows or too much light

Did not realize the wallboard wasn't new. What does the little hidden window look like from the outside? Do you have another window in this room? Have all the chimneys been removed and sealed. You could fit the firebox with a recessed bookcase? or storage cupboard. etc. If needed. I think you are doing a great job. Now you will have proper insulation and new wallboard. Great job. The state of those walls behind and all that wasted spaces as well as the state of the modern construction too! 😀 Good decision on getting rid of the walls to make office space bigger. Regarding tiny window, I would say take it out and brick it up, don't board it over as it can lead to problems in the future.

I think you are amazing for taking on such a big project. I wouldn’t even attempt it now I am older - everything hurts for longer these days. I think having natural light coming into the room is always nice so I would keep the window. There is nothing wrong with your arms. There will be people out there just wishing to have your build.

I would keep the window AND the fireplace. I would also try to expose some of the stone interior walls. keep as much of the original features and character as you can.

If the window is not going to be opened, perhaps you could commission an artist to make a stained glass piece to put in the window space. It would still let in light and add to the uniqueness of the room.

With the way energy prices are going there’s no way I’d cover up fireplaces- when the power goes out/rationing starts, you’ll have a source of heat, cooking and light.

Kinda looked like black mold around your little window. I think you should refrain from blocking it up again. I've recently bought one of those multicutters - a proper game changer for all sorts of jobs. I cut through the ceiling plasterboard, (from the loft), to see what the void was in the room below. It was just a void with a pipe that I can now knock out. Trouble is, I'm left with a hole in the ceiling.... 😂 Fun times.

I’d cover up the fireplace but that wee window adds some character. That has to stay surely 😍 maybe build a smaller fitted wardrobe where the bigger one was? Love the videos as always 😀
