Catherine de Medici (Samantha Morton) is Queen Regent of France now that her son, Charles IX has come of age. Distracted by the personal conflicts of the Valois children, a new mysterious prophet named Edith gains a loyal following who vow to challenge the current religious establishment, sparking tension across the country. Feeling threatened by the rising strain, the divided court turn to their own schemes for selfish benefit. The Guises commit unholy acts while the Bourbons turn to a familiar foreign sovereign, Queen Elizabeth I of England (Minnie Driver) in hopes of personal gain.
As France falls into political and religious turmoil, Catherine struggles to maintain her power, but The Serpent Queen will do whatever she needs to regain control.

Be careful. This is "based" on history and not always factual. Fun to watch, yes, so let it spark your interest in it and educate yourself. Most of history has a far better story then these shows.

As Minnie Driver said this isn’t historically correct it’s a romp .I remember making a comment when I was 9 visiting Chenonceau and saying I thought Diane was a bit gross having been the nanny then the lover now I’m 60 and don’t understand why the French don’t think grooming is that bad.They compare romantically our current president wife to Diane 😂

I like how, despite the era, Catherine is capable of indentifying what we would now call grooming. People in different eras weren't stupid and could discern right and wrong

I loved season 1 and I despised Diane's character. I think Henry would have still been alive if not for her influence. It kind of reminds me of a character in Game of Throne....Margaery Tyrell. She used sex to control Tommen who was a teenage boy turned King and then taunted Cersei , his mother, with it behind Tommen's back. Margaery was.a fan favorite and I think she would have been a great queen but I never understood why there weren't more people who pointed out the grooming aspect of her relationship with Tommen.

Yes, her obsession with her looks was well portrayed in season 1. In this clip she is actually quite old, long after her banishment from court.

... shes also 60. Looks pretty damn good for 60 in a time before botox and facelifts! Real life Dianne was 35 to Henrys 15 and he died at 40 years old.

Yes she does appear to have many lines and dull in completion but if you look closely she also has white in her hair indicating the amount of time that has passed since catherine banished her from court, she and catherine had quite an age difference as Diane knew the Valois royal bloodline from birth, catherine and Henry had 10 children whom diane watched grow into adulthood so Diane is well into her 60s at this point that's why she looks the way she does and her constant obsession of bathing and ingesting liquid gold did not help her at all with her current looks.

The actress portraying her is charming and pretty in real life, she was made to look older or ''more dull'' in your version through prosthetics, so be more careful with your judgements about someone's looks.

I guess she ran out of her supply of drinkable gold? Either that or she wasn't aware of the long term side effects because her skin looks to be riddled with age spots but I think its all the gold finally seeping through her pores.

Yall need to stop falling victim to the same mystification of gold she did. Its just an element at its core and shes just a character. It has effects on the body and it can be poisonous pretty quickly but it doesnt have any special powers.

Can someone explain what is going on with the makeup in this season? Why are Diane and the Guises all wearing makeup 2-3 shades too dark for their complexions? It's like the fake-tan orange look from the early 2000s. Their faces look actually dirty. The makeup people didn't do that to Catherine, Mary, or Elizabeth though. Is this supposed to be an artistic thing? Are the writers subtly comparing these characters to the "fake orange tan" celebrities of today? Or does this series just have a makeup/costume department worse than Reign?

Diane was afraid of getting and looking old , she used to drink a solution made of gold that she believed would make her look youthful, however the excess of her drinking it lead to her own death , when her skull was discovered years ago it had traces of gold mix with other chemicals. So if you look at the makeup she’s appearing a little yellowish witch is pretty accurate
