In an era where patriarchy was so dominant, a woman should be really smart and cunning to be able to survive among the higher ups.

I think her husband has been 'groomed' by Diana, yes, I used that term because it fit, based on their age and position then. And his past, as a hostage to Spain also cause him some issue imo, and back then, no one would even thought about 'counseling' LOL. I think he could've grown to care for Catherine however, his past, and the influence of others around him probably prevented that to become reality. Catherine is a great historical figure though, a very strong woman.

Very well portrayed. The Narrator's pronunciation of French names withstanding! I didn't realize how much Diane de Poitier held sway over the King and her scheming was outrageous! No wonder Catherine had to be wary and be strong, manipulate events. I've never liked Catherine buy in this video she comes across as smart and very clever. She's the consumate politican. Wheras Diane I've had a fondness for butt in this video she is greedy, destructive and a damn nuisance. Excellent portrayal.

Henry was severely damaged during his childhood. Big question what kind of a king his brother would have made had he lived. Their father was captured by the Spanish at Pavia, and he exchanged himself for his two sons, sending them to Spain for his own release. They spent 3 years as prisoners of war. At first they were kept in tolerable conditions (wonder what is meant under “tolerable”) But spine after his return to court, their father refused the Treaty of Madrid, risking his sons lives. I can bet they both felt completely betrayed and abandoned. The level of trauma is hard to imagine. Charles V was so angry that their father couldn’t care less that their condition quickly deteriorated. They female relatives were trying to negotiate their release. When one of their grandmothers, Louise of Savoy finally saw them - they could barely speak French, we’re deeply depressed, totally defeated and very thin. Likely Francis (the son) there got sick with tuberculosis, which eventually killed him (after their release). And since Henry was so little when that ordeal began, this left a deep imprint on his personality and mental health until his death. If I remember correctly he turned 6 already in captivity. So, in real history, I am afraid Henry II of France was not an emotionally balanced person. He had nasty fears. And, of course, no one had worked through the entire trauma when he got back home, still a child. Imagine giving a person like this near absolute power?

The segment covering the departure and imprisonment of Mary, Queen of Scots, was inaccurate. After Mary left France, she returned to Scotland to rule for quite a long time. In Actual Life these characters were way different & not so weak . At start , Prince Henry could hold his own in battle , to emerge victorious. Mistress Diane had to have brains & beauty to hold her own against Queen Catherine & other beautiful younger women in the palace ! It seems circumstances made Queen Mother Catherine a victor in end due to preservance . Sometimes you have to endure the hardships in life to achieve success ( Royalty & Nobility hardly had any hardship in this movie ) . Bourbon , DeGuise & Queen Mary factions could have increased their power by organising expedition to America for new routes however they didn't do so ! Queen Elizabeth continued with expeditions of America , she left the glory or criticism of her actions to the future generations. Each faction took their own virtue or disregarded it .

Its interesting that her daughter in law, the extremely tall yet elegant and beautiful, Mary Queen of Scots was universally praised and loved at the French court but not by Catherine. Apparently, Mary let slip that Catherine was of low birth and no royal. True but a dangerous slip of Mary's tongue. Catherine was ruthless in revenge and never ever forgave Mary. Im not keen on Catherine as she caused the St. Bartholemew's Massacre of 1572 and tried to accuse others of inciting this deplorrable massacre. Ruthless, tough yet had a strength of will and nerves of steel. Hard , tough Queen.

@pippavombr5856

Mary Tudor was married to King Louis XII of France for a very short time. Married from 1514 till the Kings death 1515. She was his third wife and around 18 when she married the 52 year old King. Mary, Queen of Scots was married with 14 to Francis II (who was also King of Scotland) as well 14 in the year 1558. She was widowed in 1560 and remarried a distant cousin. Bartholomew day/night massacre happend during the French Wars of Religion in 1572. The Kings (Charles IX) sister Margaret a catholic married King Henry III of Navarre a protestant on Aug. 18. 1572 and the Massacre started a few days later. Many believed King Charles IX mother Catherine de'Medici (Queen of France 1547 to 1559) was involved, but it was never proved. None of the Mary's you mentioned had something to do with the massacre.

There are three named Mary. Mary Stuart and two Mary Tudors. The first Mary Tudor was the sister of King Henry VIII. She married the King of France (an old man at the time, she was his third wife). He died. She was free then... She married Charles Brandon for her second marriage and became a duchess. She enraged Henry VIII (her brother) by marrying (the second time) below her station in life. Her niece was named Mary Tudor, too. The 2nd Mary Tudor was Bloody Mary. She was the Queen of England, older half-sister to Elizabeth I and 1st daughter to Henry VIII, her aunt was named Mary Tudor. Her mother was Catherine of Aragon. Mary was the one killing Protestants in England (Bloody Mary) and was the Queen of Spain due to her marriage before she died. She died then Elizabeth I became the Queen of England. Mary, Queen of Scots (married to Catherine de Medici's son, also she was the Queen of France for a little bit) was executed later in life by Elizabeth I of England and the same Elizabeth I took this Mary's son as her heir... since Mary Stuart was a cousin through Henry VIII's sister... Henry VIII's other sister was named Margaret Tudor. Mary Tudor and Margaret Tudor were sisters who had a niece named Mary Tudor through their brother, Henry VIII. Mary Stuart's son and heir was James VI of Scotland and later became James I of England. Scotland and England were united under one ruler due to Elizabeth I not marrying and having children. Mary Tudor, *Princess of England, Queen of France, Duchess of Suffolk Mary Tudor, Princess of England, *Queen of England, Queen of Spain Mary Stuart, Princess of Scotland, *Queen of Scotland, Queen of France

Just goes to show you that this kind of thing has been going on for centuries. The fact that everyone acts so surprised like Charles is the first Prince (at the time) to have a mistress is shocking at how ignorant people are of history. Let’s be honest, too… as shallow as society as far as good looks are concerned, no one would’ve given a damn had Camilla been better looking than Diana. But since Diana was the much better looking woman (and people think in terms of fairy tales), they instantly hated Charles and Camilla. Diana brilliantly knew how to get the public on her side, too. I tend to think the opposite of everyone else, too. Everyone loves Person A, so I favor Person B.

I read a biography of Catherine DeMedici. She was an evil, vile women who practiced necropathy. How anyone can admire her is beyond me. The portrayal is very good. The actress is extremely talented.

The first opera (sorry Peri) was written for her marriage in 1607. It was written by Monteverdi. She lived. with terrible heartache.

this is a decent video of story telling and the edits from the film are brilliant. the music , though, is very annoying. however, thank you much for this review. it is a very interesting and well produced film. 🌷🌱 Oh! yea!! Catherine!! 🌹

Really! Whoever is narrating the dialogue has done a terrible job. Very mechanical, ignoring punctuation and appropriate pauses and pronunciation. Can't listen to it!

While Diane was a bit sketchy in how she formed a relationship with Henry, I hate how they watered her down (along with the other characters) to build Catherine up. Diane never dreamt nor wanted to be queen. She had all the power without the obligations as Henry’s mistress. She was also quite intelligent, elegant, and beautiful - looking very young for her age - whereas they seem to be going for an almost witch-like look here.
