Very nice presentation. Most of your videos show you with your web sling rather than the 1907 leather, so we expect it to be your favorite and now we know why. One other thing about dead cow versus dead plant happens when we get caught in the weather. Leather can have issues while wet, and other ones afterwards while the web sling is less susceptible during and after. I use the synthetic versions of the 1907 just in case of snow/rain. I also would add, many “cheap” web sling clamps might require a little attention to detail and some “tweaking” adjustment to be reliable. Work those clamps up front to avoid trouble while in prep. Spending some time experimenting with your hold using the standard 1907 and web sling to see what you like best is time well spent. There is also a no-pulse configuration of the 1907 that has pros and cons that is worth a look as well. There isn’t one “right” sling for everyone, so don’t feel like you must use any one in particular. Many thanks for your generosity with the video work. Best Wishes to You and Yours for the holidays.

This is great, thank you. I had my 1907 sling setup as per the CMP and some other original methods for the 1903 Springfield and Garand, which have the frogs facing in and one keeper controlling the bottom arm loop, and the other keeper on top of the top frog. You still shoot in a similar fashion and sljng up the same way, but you can’t get the arm loop quite as tight with just one keeper holding it. I guess that’s the difference between setting up the rifle to more quickly adjust strap length, and setting it up for competition. (?)

There are a couple of ways to configure the leather sling. This video shows the method that I have learned over the years of competing. As long as the configuration works for the way someone is using the sling, that's all that matters.

Nice. This video is well done. The only thing I do differently with the web sling is flip the top metal keeper around so the flat part is pressing against my hand/wrist/arm. That and run at as close to the end of the slack as possible to stop a good wind from pushing it around.

😅 haha, very good. We're not allowed to use the loop sling in Filed rifle or cscoped 3P here in Oz, I have one but I have to use it as a normal sling and twist around my upper arm to mimic a proper use of a sling. Best regards, Annie

I have to tell story from my days of service rifle shooting. On one of my two trips to Camp Perry, I was scoring a fellow who was in his prep period for some sitting rapid. Suddenly I sense he is flustered and scrambling. The commands are given and he starts to shoot. Counting rounds, I noticed that he is shooting in a most unorthodox style with a high elbow 'chicken wing', the rifle butt gliding past his ear, and a counter-clockwise rifle cant of almost 60 degrees. After he has finished and we are awaiting the scores, I asked what was wrong? It turns out he had purchased a new sling on commercial row and had fitted it that night in his motel room. He forgot about his glove and shooting jacket so when he went to 'sling up', it was woefully short. (Note to self: Do not change a major piece of kit just before the big match.) I have another great story of a negligent discharge.

I always appreciate your videos. As a new high power shooter I am soaking it all up. Take this with a grain of salt as I don’t have years of experience to bring to the table, but I setup my top loop with the frogs already slid up close to the keepers. This allows me to get a solid snug tension on my tricep in one tug vice several smaller adjustments. It simply locks right up.
@konrad1853
@konrad1853 3 года назад
The loops in the video are probably on the extreme size because that helps illustrate the point. I have found that if I keep the frogs too close to the keepers, there will be a time when I have to open the loop a little more and I can't push the keepers higher because the frog is in the way. That leads to more fumbling.

Thank you so much for the detailed description on how to rig and use a service rifle sling; I'm starting to shoot SR after many years of smallbore and match rifle, and your videos on the various aspects of XTC have been invaluable. One question: do you do anything with the tail on the leather sling while you're in sitting or prone, or do you just let it hang out where ever it lies?

Have you ever tried moving the keeper against the frog to create a hand stop? Use the rear keeper to secure the sling on your arm. The tension is now between your arm and the hand stop, not on the front sling swivel. You can easily loosen both keepers while in position and move the front frog to change the position of the hand stop - without changing the holes the frog is in. Retighten the keeper on the hand stop and then the rear one on your arm.

Surprising that you don't use Anschutz, Gehmann or MEV slings with sling keepers as used in small-bore competition. 🤔 Is there a reason for this? The materials used in those slings are unaffected by the weather and some have adjusters that can be accessed whilst in position.
@konrad1853
@konrad1853 Год назад
I compete in a subset of highpower competition called Service Rifle. The rules for this are more strict than general highpower, similar to the difference between Standard Rifle and Free Rifle. We are only allowed to use the two slings that I show in the video so other options are not applicable.

Why do you have the sling installed with the keepers toward the stock? I thought they faced towards the outside.
@konrad1853
@konrad1853 3 года назад
If you are referring to the metal hooks, these are called "frogs". These face the rifle so that, when in position, the sling tension pulls on the outside of your arm. This keeps the sling from loosening while you are shooting. Having the frogs facing away from the rifle would not be as functional for competition but has a better look.

Konrad do you have any recommendations for sources of good quality reproduction web slings? I have one I like I bought years ago at gun show and have no idea what make it is. The web is heavy and the latch is quite tight when closed. I got some backup slings from the CMP E-Store recently and they are a thinner web. The latch piece on these newer slings doesn't require much effort to close so I foresee them slipping in a match.

I started using a webbed sling, but have been using a Turner leather for a while now due to the availability of longer lengths. I noticed you had a preference for webbed in your previous videos. Would you know of a source for longer than standard web slings that are legal for High Power matches?
@konrad1853
@konrad1853 3 года назад
The rules don't limit the length of the sling. I don't believe there are any "extra long" slings. Web slings will vary a little in length from one to another but it's really just chance. That being said, I'm not sure why you would need a longer web sling as the standard length should work for just about any body type.

Either sling will do it's job provided it is set up and used correctly. If the web sling does not remain tight on your arm, be sure it is configured correctly on the rifle. If you are using the correct loop, it will stay in place.
@erich9111
