About the sexism, this book is set in the spanish civil war, Franco's dictatorship and, obviously, a different time. I think Carlos Ruiz Zafón did a great job with his characters, they are what a spanish man (an woman) in the 1930-1960 would be, the way they think and speak is spot on. He wasn't sexists at all, he was a sweet guy and very smart so he knew his characters had to be this way because that's how poeple were at the time.

I feel that way to with a lot of certain books, especially period pieces. I’m very understanding, or I guess, lenient with books that do have those types of tones, especially period pieces. I think people need to remember or keep in mind when it comes to reading period pieces, fiction or real, or stories that take place in the past, that certain ideologies and social classes were more accepted and valued in society during that time, hence if you want an “authentic” character, there are some things that you may read that you may not agree with and that’s completely understandable. Not all people shared or represented the same values, of course, but the idea of how the past was so different, how societal values and ways of thinking differed and what was socially acceptable and what was condemned, is definitely something to keep in mind when reading. So to judge a period book harshly because the ideologies are very different is a bit.....biased I guess? Hope that makes sense, completely agree with you ~^-^~

The shadow of the wind is a master piece I do feel bad for non Spanish speakers because they don’t get the real Fermin Romero the Torres. The translation does not help because the way Fermin talks cannot be translated. Trust me Fermin is my favorite fictional character. Love all 4 books of the cemetery of the forgotten books. Please read the other three books in the series. God bless you all

That's exactly how I feel. These books are my all time favorites, and the one I love the most is The Prisoner of Heaven because it tells Fermin's story (he's also my favorite fictional character). I live in Barcelona so it is magical to walk the streets imagining the scenes of the books. I do think it must get lost in traslation, because I don't know a lot of spanish readers that have given it less than a 4/5. I'm so sad that not everyone can enjoy it in its original language! 😢

Hi! I recommend reading the books in publishing order, because for the 3rd and 4th book is important to know what happens in the 1st and 2nd. Thank you so much for this live, I really enjoyed it :)

We technically did get a female pov in the book (Nurias letter to daniel). While Nuria was explaining what happened there was a part where she was being harassed in her work by her boss. She was felt really uncomfortable to the point where she ran away. That also got her fired. Sadly, the sexism and hypersexualization of the female characters is very accurate to that current time period. Remember that this was during Franco’s reign.

Unfortunately not just for that current time period.

It blows my mind that people are conflating the sexism in the book with the views of the author. It's very clear throughout the narrative that themes of misogyny and sexism are framed in a bad light. He's capturing the awful systemic degradation of women during that time AND PLACE (people are using examples of books released before the narrative that don't have sexism. The books you're comparing don't take place in Spain during this time.) There are so many examples of the central characters expression of disgust with the status quo in relation to these themes WHILE ALSO BEING COMPLICIT TO AN UNHEALTHY CULTURE OF OBJECTIVICATION THAT LEADS TO MORE SERIOUS ABUSE. THAT'S THE POINT. It's insidious and unhealthy to pretend this didn't exist or doesn't exist. I don't read books to escape into a utopia, I read books to explore the issues we face in reality so we may better understand them and learn to do better which is very much the mission of this book.

This is one of my favourite books (I read it ages ago - 10yrs). It's a 4.5-star. And I really think we have to take into account the setting (Spanish civil war), so the author did a great job on creating the characters and the atmosphere. I really enjoy the series the first is by far the best one. I read in Portuguese (I want to re-read it in Spanish soon).

I loved The Shadow of The Wind because I went for this with zero expectations and I totally agree with Ellias about Nuria's manuscript revelation of the story. I must say that the last 120 pages of Nuria's manuscript, the story was kind of rushed. So you have to kind of wait for it when you read it. Otherwise you could have missed it.

@@melodydurrett9658 i knooow!!!! 😭😭😭😭 i was so rooting for Julián and Nuria all the way (although I feel so much for poor Penélope and selfless Miquel too 😭💔). I think Julián did love Nuria at some point, it's just that his quest for vengeance got the best of him until it's too late... and Fumero finally got to Nuria. After all, Julián wrote a poem for her the night she came home after the assault. And it was the first thing he wrote in ages :') It was also quite odd for Nuria to say, I loved Julián for two weeks, but I want to be Señora Moliner for the rest of my life... and in the end, she did get to be Señora Moliner until she died, but her husband for the most part is actually Julián! It's so bittersweet 😭😭😭 love their scenes by the beach. I wish they were actual scenes and not exposition only 😭💔 I think we get some closure here with regards to Carax in the last book, The Labyrinth of Spirits (based on the reviews).
