Mat being hanged on Avendesora and gaining knowledge of the Old Tongue is a paralell to Norse mythology where Odin hangs himself on Yggdrasil and gains knowledge of the runes :)

And on top of that, Mat gets a spear with two ravens carved into it at the same time he gets hanged, which is a clear nod to Odin's spear and his two knowledge-seeking raven companions, Hugin and Munin.

You hit on the exact reason I love Rand so much which is that he struggles to earn and to hold onto every bit of power that he can. He works so much harder at being a leader than anyone else in the series does, and certainly more than anyone (except maybe Lan) gives him credit for, and it just makes his whole character arc feel so much more complete than certain other characters.

@@Rendref Oh a huge amount happened if you don't remember. (the ending obviously the biggest thing) I can think of many events in that book and it is widely regarded as one of the best most entertaining books in the series. Spoilers follow: Few of the things just off the top of my head. Rand's bonding, the Black Tower, Nynavae and Logain's thing. Egwene is raised. So MUCH
@Unlitedsoul
@Unlitedsoul 5 лет назад
@@Rendref Let's see. Spoiler warning for anyone who has not read the book! Founding of the Black Tower and Mazrim Taim is put in charge of it. Davram Bashere moves more and more into Rand's influence. Alanna force bonds Rand, which causes him to trust Aes Sedai even less than he already does. At the same time, Verin begins to earn her trust with Rand. Egwene and Gawyn's romance begins, as does the rivalry between Gawyn and Rand (mostly due to misinformation provided to him by black ajah Aes Sedai). Rand sends Matt, Aviendha, and the Band of the Red Hand to help Elayne return to Caemlyn and begin her ascent to the throne, thus announcing his plans for both Andor and Cairhien. It also enhances the bond between Aviendha and Elayne, which also frees up Aviendha's romantic interests with Rand. Min and Rand's romance and personal alliance begins. Rand is captured, Lews Therin comes insanely close to taking him over... while Rand nearly goes mad just from the experience. Rand also learns how to overcome being shielded by 13 Aes Sedai. He also killed 2 warders with his swordsmanship. One of which had a heron-marked blade, thus Rand gets his first true victory over a blade master that didn't involve Matt's luck. Perin begins to show how the ta'veren links to Rand draw the others in by instinctive, almost immediate rush toward Rand with a massive military force made up of both his own and Rand's followers... without actually knowing he was in danger. Salidar Aes Sedai politics are abound, and it gives us some insight on how these things are done within the White Tower. We see a lot of truly intriguing rituals, not to mention all of the background maneuvering through the eyes of Siuan, Leane, and Gareth Brynn. Meanwhile, Nynaeve learns how to heal using the most advanced of Aes Sedai manners... without being trained. She also learns how to heal stilling/gentling. Logain flees and joins the Black Tower as an immediate counter to Taim. Egwene is raised to the Amyrlin Seat of the Salidar Aes Sedai. Elayne figures out how to create cuendillar. She also begins creating other ter'angreal, and starts work on duplicating Matt's fox head medallion. All the major events based in Ebou Dar begin. Then of course, one of the greatest fantasy battles of all time... Dumai's Wells happens. "Asha'men Kill!" leads to "Kneel or you will be knelt." Rand professes distrust of the Aes Sedai. Much of the Shaido Aiel are destroyed, forcing the remnants of Couladin and Savanna's followers to flee and thus begin the Malden story arch. There's enough here to create 3 books from, but you know... doesn't "require 1000 pages."

The absolute funniest moment was Min in chapter 1 (I think?) getting told by Siuan Sanche step by step how she will disguise herself, which starts at using her full name, then new clothes, then hair curls, and finally make up - each step ("oh no!") traumatises her. So damn funny.

Book 4 isn't necessarily where Mat starts to shine, but it is the book that sets him on the path that will carry him through the series. He went through the doorway in Tear, and didn't like the answers he got, which is why he went through the one in Rhuidean, thinking it would take him back to the Ael'fin (snake people). When it turned out be lead to the Eel'fin (the fox people) instead, he didn't realize that they operated differently. They don't answer questions - they grant requests, in return for a price. His inadvertent requests while trying to get them to give him answers led to the old memories filling the gaps left from the severing of his link with the dagger, the foxhead medallion, and the Ashendrai spear/polearm. Those are their ways of giving him "these holes filled", "a way to be free of Aes Sedai and the Power", and "a way to be away from you and back to Rhuidean". (The last one doesn't become obvious until much later in the series, however). The price, since he didn't ask to get out alive, was to be hung. Together, those three "gifts" start to make him into who and what he will become. I wont' completely spoil that, except to say that you start to see it in Book 5. That's where I started to really like Mat.

I've only read through the series once so far and I can understand why people think Perrin is boring but I don't agree. Perrin is a stable base, hes not teetering on the edge of madness, he's not a jokester, he is sure and steady. His character reminds me of the way a blacksmith works, if all you look at is them banging on metal it looks boring, but if you watch and appreciate the skill that it takes to shape a hunk of metal into something useful, when you u derstand the repetition it can be beautiful.

1. Nynaeve and Elayne went to Tanchico, Perrin and Faile went to the Two Rivers where Perrin is from. 2. Selene appeared in book 2 (Rand was barely in book 3). 3. The archways in Tear and Rhuidean work on the principle of three questions or three requests and a price set according to what is asked. Mat's three requests in Rhuidean were to have the holes in his memories filled (he receives the memories of others who've ventured into the realm of the Finn), protection from Aes Sedai and a way back to Rhuidean. The price for him is to be hanged. It's an Odin reference, being hanged for knowledge. 4. The secret of the Aiel past is revealed to the Aiel in the end by Rand, as a way of proving that he's the Car'a'carn. This will be explored further in the next book.

Some clarificafion for ya Merphs! Mat got the memories of his ancestors from those fox people. They basically grant you three wishes but demand a price. During a conversation with them Mat says something like "damn I wish my memories didn't have so many holes" so the fox people take it as a wish and so they fill the holes in his memories, with memories of his ancestors. They hang him afterwards because Mat didn't say what he's going to pay for the wishes, so the fox people decided that he has to pay with his life. You can reread that section and try to see what Mat accidentaly wishes for. As for the visions of the past that Rand sees, it's really humiliating for the Aiel, because their whole culture is about the fact that they are honorable warriors who always fulfill their oaths. So when they find out that their ancestors were originally pacifists and they broke their oaths and became warriors, it's a very crushing revelation to them. By the way you nailed the pronunciations this time! If you have any more questions, feel free to ask :) Lovely review, can't wait for you to finish Book 5! Also if you ever get confused while reading, try looking in the glossary at the end of each book. It can really help clear some things up, especially if you don't remember who character X is. Only works for the more major characters though, you won't find every single minor Aes Sedai there.

I’ve read the entire series and the thing with paren is this. He wants nothing more than a simple life. His sense of duty won’t allow him to but he would like nothing more than to run off and make horse shoes for the rest of his life. Everything he does is very straight forward and that’s why I think some people call him boring. He was probably my second favorite behind Matt. Matt as you said is funny but he has this character arc where you see that he is a very good person by what he does but the things he says make him seem like a disloyal ass at times. The thing is it’s all talk. He grumbles but he always does what needs to be done. His character only gets better in the later books.

In the first book, she learns the power, in the second book she is captured by the Seanchan and learns how to use the power as a weapon, Now in book 4 she is trained in the ways of being a wise one, this will also continue. To me, Egwene goes through the most thought out character arc, and her learning to be a wise one is very key.

Post viewing: I feel that due to the huge character roster there is a character for everyone. Like many, I’m not really compelled by Perrin. But I’m very fond of Rand. What I have always found frustrating is that sometimes I think we spend too much time with a character that when we switch POVs it can be hard to keep going because you were so invested in the previous POV. It becomes more prevalent in a crown of swords for me (at least where I am so far..). It’s great because you get invested in all the plot threads but sometimes I find myself reading through a chapter just to get to the next POV.

Egwene will probably be in Fires of Heaven a lot more- I feel she was limited because of her training with the Wise Ones' and when she comes back she'll be further along. Robert probably couldn't include another arc because they was already so much in this book! I agree as well, I finally feel like I'm seeing Rand and starting to really like the guy. Before I always felt meh. And I gotta say, Nynaeve beating and capturing (temporarily) a Forsaken was pretty awesome. I like her despite her attitude, but agree she can be difficult. I was also shocked that despite Elayne's thing with Rand, I like seeing her growing into her powers and her journey. She's doing pretty good for a Princess who lived a sheltered and luxurious life... but her whole "thing" with Rand is annoying. He keeps thinking of Min and she loves him, so I gotta say I see them hooking up... or him and that Aeil girl (Egwene's friend, can't spell her name lol). WAY too many cooks in the kitchen. I absolutely loved the whole Perrin and Two Rivers bit. It was definitely close to being the main story, however Rand becoming the Aeil Chief of Chiefs was it for me. The whole seeing the history through his ancestors eyes was mind blowing. I just loved seeing Perrin grown into Lord Perrin GoldenEyes and see Two Rivers become a town to be reckoned with. I just don't trust either Aes Sedai. Verin is at the top of my list for Black Ajah- she told Rand in book 2 or 3 that Moiraine sent her to go with Rand, however Moiraine frowned and said she didn't. How could Verin lie? Only logical sense is she's of the Black, which suck because I really like her and that confirms it for me even more. I do like Alanna... I do not feel she is Black, but she's made comments about bending men against there will that's made me wonder what she'd do if she ever got alone with Rand. That seems unlikely as of right now, and Rand's channeling strength is only growing and now has Asmodeus, kinda, in a leash and teaching him. And F*CK Elaida (sp?) and that emotionless Keeper of hers. I am SO scared Moiraine isn't going to find out about the false Amyrlin before she sends all the tools of Power from Rhuidean to the White Tower where that traitorous witch would get her grubby hands on them... She needs to go!

I agree with you alot. I hadnt realized Verin had managed to lie, I always thought of her on the side of the light, now im questioning it. I really like how Rand was secretive and set the trap for the forsaken. Hes playing Lanfear and seems to be doing well so far.

Nyneave can be frustrating, but she's my all time favorite character so I feel the need to offer some reading tips for her She's in a really difficult place for almost everything. She left her village to protect these children she babysat for and now she's nowhere near them. It was her choice and it was the right choice, but it's still painful to leave her charges behind. (Also to accept that they're growing up and she has to build a relationship of equals with them.) She's just enough older to feel horribly responsible for them and it hurts her to leave them to fight their own battles. Lan is the source of the problems in that relationship. I love them, but he spends a lot of time telling Nyneave that he loves and can never be with her. Nyneave tells him she loves him and doesn't see the problems he sees. Also there's Lan's duties as a Warder. Really the drama is all Lan though. For her anger issues it's good to remember that she can't channel unless she's angry. That was a subconscious fact for years, buy now she knows it. A lot of the time she's purposely making herself angry so that if she has to channel she can. She's also rude and a penny pincher, buy she's not angry without reason. Anyways! Love the reviews. It's very interesting to see the things I take for granted being overlooked on a first read through.

I agree that this is Perrin's book and that he really shines in it. The reason people find him boring is because of his arc starting at this point all the way till book 11. The highlight if this book to me when I read it first was the stuff that happens at Rhuidean and when Siuan gets deposed and stilled (I was in shock!!!!!). Can't wait for you to read book 5 which is also really good!

It's funny that you say here that Rand was following Moiraine around. He hasn't been for quite some time. Even in The Great Hunt, he goes his own way and is mostly motivated by helping Mat, at root. In The Dragon Reborn, he runs off to fulfill the prophecy (or get killed trying), snubbing Moiraine's ideas about what to do and leaving her chasing after him. In The Shadow Rising, he doesn't give her an inch, and it's clear he doesn't listen to her and it's because he doesn't trust her. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, though.

The thing with having a favourite character in the WoT is: you‘re not really supposed to have one throughout all the books. They change and situations get difficult and actions make it difficult to stick to a singular character. For instance: book one i loved Rand and lost him throughout the series to come back to him right at the end. Loved Nyneave throughout the middle/end and was a bigger fan of Perrin before I finally understood all the build up for Mat. The next book, you‘ll probably start seeing why Robert Jordan built this situation up so much. His character needs a massive amount of setup. Enjoy the next books :) love your videos! (Basically only watch you and Daniel for booktubers.)

And not to speak of sidecharacters. If i could get more of Loial, Logain and especially Thom, i would. But Thom being so mysterious makes for him to be an even better character (i guess he shares the role of Gandalf in this book with Moirane?)

About what happened to Mat. Without spoiling anything, since you do not have all the info at this point in the story, here is what he said before he was found hanging by Rand. He said he wanted to have the holes of his memory filled, to be freed from the One Power and the Aes Sedhai and to be away from then and return to Rhuidean if they would not answer his questions. All of those statements were followed by one of the fox people saying “done”.

*Spoilers* Matt's hanging reflects mythological themes of sacrificing something to obtain something. Specifically, it mimics the sacrifice of the God Óðinn Who hung Himself from the World-Tree Yggdrasill to obtain the knowledge of the Runes. Just like Matt is hanged from the Tree of Life and subsequently obtains the knowledge of great strategists of ages past. Also, he forgot to negotiate a price to be paid by him, so the Eelfinn, the Fox People you reach through the gate in Rhuidean, set their own price. His life. AND he didn't seem to realise that these guys might not do the same thing as the Aelfinn he met in the gate back in Tear.

I absolutely adore that every time you said something happened in book X, it actually happened in book X+1 or X-1. This pleases me because the whole Wheel of Time is considered a single novel, and the fact that it blurs into one single story is a good thing. You want more Lan, Aviendha, Min and Loial? Your wish will be granted. All of them have depths you haven't begun to plumb. I won't spoil when or to what degree, but you definitely have more joy to get out of them. I also love that you nailed the actual name of the weave that Moghedian used on Elayne and Nynaeve. It is, indeed, Compulsion. {I don't consider knowing this name a spoiler, especially since you guessed it ^_^} And yes, it's one of, if not *the* most terrifying use of the Power. {Balefire is the only competitor for terror-inspiring, in my book.}

I absolutely adore Nynaeve. I get her. Basically it’s the curse of being incredibly capable from a young age. People doubt you, not because you’ve shown some type of failing in what you do, but because of your age. She literally HAD to be overly aggressive with the Edmonds Fielders and bulldoze over the Women’s Circle and the Council before any of them could stop to think about her being young enough to be their (grand)daughter. She’s such an interesting mixture of confidence and insecurity. Elayne is easy going with others because she never had to struggle for her position. It didn’t matter if Elayne was capable or not; she was obeyed from the time she was a small child simply for being born the Daughter Heir. Literally everyone but the Queen had to defer to her, even her older siblings. Nynaeve had to work hard, become the best at what she did, and fight for every scrap, so she’s always kind of in fight mode. In the end I think you’ll come to love her. She’s fiercely loyal and big hearted.

The Shadow Rising is my favourite book of the series. Perrin with his own scouring of the Shire & Rand’s travelling back through his bloodline are some of the best story arcs of all the novels. What is your opinion of how much the three boys hate the enhanced abilities they find themselves with. What males in their late teens wouldn’t want special powers. Most men of that age think themselves invincible. I don’t really believe that all three would be so concerned about the possible dangers, teenage boys are reckless throughout history. There worries don’t ring true.

Yeah, I got really excited when Rand went through the pillars. Talk of flying machines and other signs of much more advanced technology and then the buildings being possible skyscrapers just made me realize what the previous age must have been like. Rich Freeman not exactly spoilers but you are right. Probably best to wait til you finish all the novels. When I heard last year that it was being adapted I decided to finally tackle the story again. However watching RU-vid videos I encountered so many spoilers you do have to be careful.
@RichFreeman
@RichFreeman 5 лет назад
@@jarrodjeffrey759 I've found the Reddit group to be really good for this. They must get a lot of first-time readers so they have a way of tagging posts by book and then those posts must be spoiler-free after that book. This lets new readers get into discussions/speculation/etc or just ask questions partway through the series without having anything ruined. It is a bit like LOTR in the sense that it seems like there are 100 more stories that could be written in this world. I guess something I always liked about LOTR was that the world didn't seem like a Potemkin Village. For every detail that was revealed it seemed like there were hints that there were 12 more that were just beyond sight. JRRT didn't feel obligated to have an explanation for everything or fit everything into his plot (perhaps almost to the point of absurdity). In many ways I feel like WoT gets this even better, because it all works fairly consistently but you get the same depth, without quite as many crazy tangents. Without getting into any spoilers by this point in the story we have things like the thief-takers who have some kind of power that isn't really explained, but which could be a whole set of lore on its own. There is the wolf power. Of course there is the One Power but that does get a lot more exploration (though I'd say the number of weaves that actually have been employed is remarkably limited). There are the Bubbles of Evil, and so much about the Pattern itself. Maybe some of this will get explained in the last two books (I'm almost done 12), but I suspect that there will remain a ton of lore that could be built on. And all of this is with the third age, when the wheel clearly seems to go round and round. What happened in the last third age? What will happen in the next? What happened at the start of the second age? We only have bits of the end of the second age. It is a shame that those books will probably never be written.

i find it wonderful to hear someone's thoughts on their first read of the series. some of us grew up with the books, when i started there were only 3 of them out, by the time the fourth one had come out i had already re-read the first three at least once, maybe twice, can't remember, over 20 years ago. and i definitely re-read the series at least once for each book as it came out. not to mention in the early 2000s i used to play a kinda slow paced online game and have the audio books on repeat in the background for probably thousands of hours. i say that to explain that it surprises me the things that you don't catch, while i'm sure i probably did the same thing i had re-read so much as the series came out i just can't fathom it. but great reviews anyway, keep at it, if you do a single read through without re-reads in the middle it will be interesting to see what you take away from it. i bet you will have some events that stand out for you that those of us who have read the books many times wouldn't even have thought much about.

Mat's trip through Rhuidean's redstone doorway was for three things to be given, whereas the redstone doorway in Tear was for three pieces of knowledge to be given. In Rhuidean's doorway he asks to be freed from Aes Sedai so they give him a medallion to do that, then he asks for the holes that are in his memories from the dagger sickness to be filled so they fill those holes with memories from other people, then lastly he asks for a way out so they throw him out. However the rules for this doorway required a payment to be agreed on but since Mat didn't know that, they hanged him from the Avendesora tree with the spear weapon tied to the rope (there's a reason for that which you find out MUCH later in the series)

LOL! You were worried about mixing up the girls' names, but you kept mixing up Rand and Mat! Anyway, as other commenters have said, the Snakey people gave Mat the memories because he was... shall we say... less than specific in his request to have the holes in his memories filled -- he obviously wanted his own memories back, but he didn't say that so they just stuffed him full of other memories. And Nynaeve.. again, it breaks my heart that you are not liking her... but I understand it. It has been so long since I read these books for the first time, so I have no idea how I felt about her when I first went through these books... but she is far and away my favorite character, so it hurts to hear this. It's not so much that the hanging "gave him" the memories. He had them already. At the very beginning of book 1 he even "remembers" a long lost Manatheren battle cry as Moraine was telling the story of them to thr Two Rivers folk. So he had it all along, he just didn't gave complete access to it all the time. So the hanging was just his payment for the complete unlocking of that knowledge.

Basically, the hanging was Mat's payment for his requests. The fox people from the doorway told him he was wise to ask a way out "I want to go back to Rhuidean" but that he was a fool for not setting a price for his demands so they'll set the price for him, which is death. Luckily for Mat, Rand was there to save Mat from the hanging. It's also a parallel with Odin who hanged himself for 9 days from the tree of life to gain knowledge. Similarly, Mat is hanged from the tree of life for the knowledge he accidentally requested.
