AWESOME !!! The new technology with drones is SOOoooo incredible and majestic and I just am stunned by this view, I hiked and walked through this area many times before the era of drone cameras and NEVER got to clearly see all the levels of track at once before. FANTASTIC !!!

What a good reminder as to the guard rail , and why it’s there. I had to really think back on the spill and when it happened. Thank You for a beautiful video

It sounds like it has prevented other cars from spilling into the river at other times. Thanks!

Without drones we couldn't enjoy the sight of these amazing horseshoe curves. Maybe it's possible to rent a small airplane or helicopter nearby and film the surroundings but that's expensive. We should be grateful for this great invention. The dense forest around the track is wonderful, we barely see the train between the tall trees. I didn't know the sad story of the Cantara Loop. Hopefully that huge railing can prevent future disasters. This will be a fantastic movie Dan and I can't wait to see the finished product.

You are teasing us again, Dan, and I love seeing these teases! These two horseshoe curves are in beautiful locations with the Sacramento River and Mt. Shasta and Mt. Eddy in the background. That guard rail at Cantara Loop is an interesting structure and is needed on that tight loop. As I have said in my comments on previous short segment videos of Union Pacific's Black Butte Subdivision, I am looking forward to your full video on the Black Butte Subdivision.

Wowee! I have rail-fanned Dunsmuir -Black Butte several times but can’t see the loops. The guard rail structure over the Sac River is fascinating. I’ve seen some structures like this elsewhere. One parallels the BNSF tracks after they cross the Missouri River into North Kansas City. The guard rail is to prevent derailed cars from falling onto the freeway below. Looking forward to more greatness from you!

Fantastic railroad being shown in a very nice video. Thanks for the map! Is the gradient still 2% in the sharp curves? I hope not. Incredible, building "fences" for trains like for "happy" humans. Why not middle locos, pushers etc?
@TheRailfanDan
@TheRailfanDan Месяц назад
I'm not sure exactly the grade at any specific point but yes I think most of that whole sections is around 2% plus or minus 0.2% or so either way.

Ooooorrrrr I want to fly with you or be in the locomotive. Fantastic video. Have you seen my locomotive in the photo, it's a 911. Many thanks to the men and women from the fire department. Greetings from Micha from Dresden / Germany
@TheRailfanDan
@TheRailfanDan Месяц назад
Thanks Micha and no I have not seen 911. The railroad that runs on is on the other side of the country from me. I may never see it in person.

6:00 minutes in. The ECOFRAUDS won t let the UP dig a short tunnel before the curve and bridge which would significantly reduce the risk by widening the curve.

Outstanding Railfan Dan Video as always. Did you say that train was 4 miles long? Keep up the great work Dan.
@TheRailfanDan
@TheRailfanDan Месяц назад
Thank you Brian! I didn't mean to if I did say that. I meant from the top section of the railroad at Mott down to the much lower section in that same frame down along the river is about 4 rail miles in distance.

@TheRailfanDan
@TheRailfanDan Месяц назад

Dan, I see only front end power, I'm used to seeing push/pull and push locomotives on these great long consists in the USA. What determines the locomotive positioning on a train?
@TheRailfanDan
@TheRailfanDan Месяц назад
Honestly I couldn't give you the most definite answer but it has to do with the routes the trains run on, length and weight of the train. I do know that these intermodal trains are fairly light compared to others.
