This video is about The Shave of a Lifetime at Pasteur Pharmacy in NYC--what a shave!!--Leon is certainly a most gracious and generous host--this was a wet shaver's dream come true for sure!!
Indeed. Just getting in and chatting up all the wetshave nuts inside. MOST INSANE SELECTION OF SHAVING PRODUCTS I have ever seen. And afterwards there is Sarge's at walking distance.
Its nice how your films are about every day life like going to restaurants or boat cruises and now at Pasteur Pharmacy NY. Very entertaining to watch in the middle of winter or when ever. Thanks Joe.
Great fun watching you enjoy your shave in that little shaver's paradise. Any shaving icons they DON'T sell at Pasteur's?! That store is unbelievable - especially considering the fact that the owners seem to completely trust their customers' advice when it comes to stocking up items they don't seem to know that much about. Talking about learning about your products from your customers! But Leon seems to be a great guy and letting you shave on site and providing you with all you need is an excellent customer service that's hard to come by. Can't believe I've been to NY so many times and never heard about that store. Thank you so much for filming and posting this! Makes me want to go back right away, spend a lot of bucks in that store - and the rest on excess baggage when flying back. ;-) Greetings from Germany! Thomas
This video is hands-down the most fun wet shave video on RU-vid that I've watched. Thanks for making this, Joe - next time I am in NYC, I will definitely be visiting Pasteur Pharmacy to pick up some wet shaving goodies.
‘Joe From Queens’, top vid(s)! Thanks for all your good work. The way Pasteur Pharmacy & Leon treated you was great ... Great service, from a great place, for a great guy. All the best from ‘Joe From Glasgow’ (Scotland).
Looks like I need to take a trip to NYC and bring an extra suitcase to fill with shaving supplies. Great video! The hospitality of Leo and the kind curiosity of the folks in the shop were a pleasure to see.
Great shave Joe. What a great idea for a video. When I get to NY, I will try to go to Pasteur’s. That place is a wet shavers dream. Keep up the good work.
Hey Joe I'm another gent from Toronto Canada. I'm a new wet shaver of about 6 months now. Shaving is now a treat!!! I hope one day to get to Pasteur's. Thank you so much for your videos. I'm learning all kinds of tricks. Take care and God bless.
Thanks Thomas--I've only been wet shaving myself for a little over a year--so I have only recently discovered the paradise known as Pasteurs...Leon is certainly a gem for sure...I couldn't possibly think of a shaving item that they don't stock---it's a must visit location for any wet shaver!!!
What, wet shaver only for a year?! You're handling that safety razor so nimbly like you've been doing it all your life - and it's not even a model or blade you're used to! You're a natural. How did you shave before you switched - cartridge or electric? Tell you what, Pasteur's should pay you for giving lectures, workshops etc. to get their clientele started on wet shaving and teach them about the subtleties of this "art form". They've got the stuff - you've got the skills. Now that you've done your share introducing them to a worldwide audience, it's time for them to kick it up a notch. With an overwhelming selection like theirs, how should an ambitious newbie know which products to choose, if he doesn't get a proper advice? No wonder they end up buying the cartridges and canned shaving foam they're used to, not knowing what they're missing out on. If it was my store, I knew who to hire. ;-)
From the middle of America, a shout out from KC. You're a lucky guy, I'd love to see even half a Pasteur Pharmacy. This morning Proraso soap, Omega brush, Feather safety razor, Shark blade, Gillette gel, Dame Dark Horse fragrance. Ordinary stuff the old fashioned way. Not even my father shaves like this, got to go back to Grandpa to get a shave this smooth. Fantastic video!
Great video Joe. Not sure why I'm just finding this on TBS. I wish I would have seen it sooner. I hope to get to Pasteurs soon. They were certainly gracious.
Hey from N.C. I've been wet shaving for 5 years now but I still love watching shave videos on RU-vid. Just found you today and I have to say I think you're already one of my favorites. I wanted to ask if you like soap or cream. I've always used soap but recently I tried The Art Of Shaving cream WOW that stuff is great. I still enjoy all my artisan soaps but I think I'm sold on the cream. Where I live there's not a good selection of wet shave supplies so I thought maybe you would have some recommendations on brands and scents. I also wanted to mention that here in the south we always hear how New Yorkers aren't friendly but after watching your videos I see that isn't true. You are a Gentleman sir. Thanks for all the videos and happy shaving
This is by far the greatest shave video I have ever seen. A absolute classic! The only sad part is, is that I was a NYC Manhattan cop for 20 years (Uptown in Spanish Harlem) and I never knew this place existed. My God the money I would have spent! Joe you are the best. I can watch you from Florida and dream of New York again. I was born in Queens and moved Long Island then to Florida after retirement
Thanks Michael--I think we lead parallel lives--I grew up in Queens and am now living in Long Island---I'm also an MOS---came on in 1983----still working like a fool!!
briarwood138 Great Joe. I made it to Pasteurs a couple of weeks ago I was In New York visiting relatives. Spent about 350 bucks on 1 razor 1 brush and a boat load of shave soaps. the woman in there was telling me about a shave party they have in there she said you can't even get in the place. What a great store.
Hi Michael-We have another meet up planned on Aug 13----hope you find your way back to the city that weekend--nothing quite like it!!! facebook.com/groups/984572031615831/
Thanks Joe. I'm gonna try to make it. I'm sure it's a great time and it would be great to pick your brain about all things shaving. Maybe a little cop talk lol.
Wow! GREAT Video! I live in Puerto Rico and have been wet shaving for about 3 months now and I love it and as you mentioned in the video, you just want to keep buying more razors and products, just wish there was a store like that here. Everywhere you go there's just cartridge razor advertising and they have become so darn expensive, most stores keen them behind lock and key. My brother is a professional barber and he once said to me; "we are professionals and STILL use SE Razors, you will never see us shaving our clients with a cartridge because first of all, it's expensive, second, years of using a cartridge razor may damage your skin if used carelessly, which most people do and third, you will probably never see a more perfect form of shaving than with a single blade cruising along your skin. This type of shaving, there's just no improving it anymore, it was perfect from the get go." Even my worst shave with a DE Razor now, is just far better than my best shave with a cartridge razor.
Love your videos Joe, especially this one. Being from England, you're right: I'm salivating at the choice that you have in your local store. Makes me want to jump on a plane and fly over to Pasteur's! We have nothing like this. Keep up the entertaining videos. For me the shaves are only a bit part. The tours of New York, the people you meet, and the conversations you have give for a fascinating and unique take on shave videos on RU-vid. Hope you, your family and your new shave den have a great Christmas. Look forward to the next video!!!!!
Joe, love the video, You absolutely have the Best shaving videos out there. Tried my Merkur Future and it was a Great Shave. Thanks for all the, great advice. Jim.
Epic video Joe......Enjoyed every minute of it.....I should do that at my local pharmacy here in Ontario,Canada....Just kidding.....the police would likely take me out in hand cuffs......All the best too you...Regards Robert....
Hey, Joe from Queens! This is Andrew, I was the "shaving newbie" (Parker razor and Derby blades) in your demo. Great video! Was a pleasure meeting you, and thanks for all the great shave tips! Hope you enjoyed your visit to Pasteur's Pharmacy on 34th St (sure looks like you did!) and hope to see you around the neighborhood!
Hi Andrew --great to hear from you--how's the wet shaving going? Are you getting accustomed to it? Stay in touch in Facebook if u can--if I remember correctly u we're walking with a crutch due to an injury--is it all healed ??--Joe
briarwood138 hi im Ruben from portugal living in united kingdom, recently i been watching your videos and i enjoy it. thks for making this educational videos. have fun
I guess others must have notice this, but all these shaving video characters are extremely likeable! Joe is a lovable guy. Haven't seen a video from him in a while. Hope to see you again soon, Joe!
Hey Joe! Because of you I stopped shaving with my Gillette Fusion and I bought a Merkur 34c. Wow! What a difference! Shaving has become a hobby for me now which I really enjoy. We have a store out here in Pasadena CA called the Old Town Shaving Company. It is like Pasteurs. They carry everything they do but Truefitt and Hill. Anyway, love your videos!! Keep up the good work!!!
hello from France !!! my sisters go in nyc 1 month ago and its too late for me for asking to go but ty so much for this video and if i go in states one time in my life i go in pasteur pharmacy ! ty and continue !!! and welcome at home in France for speak about shaving !!!
Joe! Love this video! I've been wanting to check out the famous Pasteur Pharmacy for a while, but you've inspired me to go this coming Saturday. Coming all the way from Canada! Thanks to Leon for indulging all of us in the DE community :D
What's up Joe From Queens :o) Glad to see a Neighbor of Queens around. I have been to that Pharmacy many times, even posted some pictures at B&B. Kool that you did a video, Awesome. Thanks for Sharing :o)
Joe, Great video and entertaining as well. I liked the look of the guy that you nailed with a little shaving cream when he walked passed you. I switched about a three weeks ago from cartridge razor to a DE. I shave daily and I've been using a can of Barbosol with one pass and I'm ready to go. I'm just putting that out there for anyone that may be considering switching to a DE and may think they have to do three passes to get a shave like they may be getting with one pass using a cartridge razor. One pass with a DE is just as good, if not better, than a cartridge razor. Plus the money you're going to save on razor blades just can't be beat.
gamermatt71 For sure matt--its a great shave with the DE--SE's like Gem are fantastic also--I find that one pass gives me a dfs shave(damn fine shave), but for the bbs(baby bottom smooth) I need the second and usually third pass with some touch -ups.
Great video. Nice guy running that place. I'm definitely gonna stop by pasteur's and spend some money on shave products i dont need just to say I've been there haha. Cheers from Maryland.
Well Thomas thanks for the compliments--I think many of the other shavers I watch here on RU-vid handle the razor much better than me. Before I was into wet shaving as I am now I used to use cartridges (Machs,Fusions etc) as well as a disposable now and then. I think that the honor that Pastuers bestowed upon me that day was my great fortune!!!
Great video! I learned alot of new techniques to apply to my wet shaving routine. I recently acquired a merkur 33C and I have been getting excellent results. Never purchasing GIllete Fusion again.
Excellent. With the selection they have, they really should do mail order and go online. They would make a killing. And we could get some hard-to-find stuff.
Many have asked them to do the mail order, but they want to remain brick and mortar only--so as not to compete with the others. I'm lucky to live close to them. Thanks Scotty!
Very nice....and like you said its kinda like being into cigars or like myself old and new briar pipes&tobacco, so I know all about the " accusation disorder's....lol I've been very interested into the classic shaving products and you have definitely pushed me over the edge :) take care ~Jaime
This is the way to go if you like a long, nostalgic ritual with lots of products. For myself I like efficiency and simplicity (Occam's Razor). After much experimentation I have decided the following: Cremo, Wilkinson blades and Qshave adjustable razor.
I was born in 56 and my Dad was born in 1918. Yes WWII Vet. I don't have a memory of him using the brush but he did of course have his Gillette DE razor. Only creme I remember him using was his Barbasol. I just researched and found that aerosol shaving cans arrived in 1949.
I wish we had a store like this in Croatia, but we dont, sadly. P.S sir irisch moos preshave is for elecrical shaving only, as far as i know. Best Regards
Hi Matija---it wasn't bad even though it's primarily for a pre-electric shave---I guess lotions are very similar---thanks for watching and have a happy and healthy new year!!
Kinda cracks me up thinking when majority of people used DE razors back in the days would of thought you were crazy shaving in a store and filming with group of people watching you.
for those of you who use facebook please check out a group i made for this kinda old school great way to shave the name of the group is called Traditional Wet Shaving
So "Joe From Queens" is MOS (see below). Gotta be one of the most 'disarming' guys in uniform out there -- clearly a humanizing force On The Force. Tough job but great to see a sweetheart of a guy enjoying life and sharing a fascinating hobby and a fascinating city.
I'm actually in Colorado (C-Springs), but live near NYC briefly and had an office in Manhattan. Amazing to see Pasteur's -- I think you just made them an outright Worldwide Destination (!). I think the Florida guy, retired MOS,is "Michael Tanner" (listed below).
Honestly I'd never heard of Pasteurs until that video...but now it's on the To Do List. That and pizza, Smith's Bar, Grand Central Oyster Bar, Black-&-Whites, etc.. So Pasteurs just went viral and global in one 45 minute, 46 second RU-vid vid. Amazing.
Before I was into wet shaving, I must have passed Pasteurs on E34 St many, many, times--who knew? There is no place else that comes close. Love those black and whites also!!
Don't when my next shave will be at Pasteurs---but I'll be there Aug 13 for the NYC meet up facebook.com/groups/984572031615831/1113944845345215/?ref=notif¬if_t=group_activity¬if_id=1468281872678343
Hey, great video!! I'm from Italy, and I'm planning a trip to NYC in October. I think I'll go to Pasteur for sure now! Do you know if they have the Feather AS-D2 razor in the store, here in Italy is almost impossible to find one.
They might have The Feather, not sure-- I saw many Above the Tie Razors there--but all the shaving gear there makes it a must visit while here in NYC--let me know when you are in NY--perhaps we can meet up and have a bite and talk a little shaving!
+lasvegasNEV I usually go to the one at 53 E 34th St--near Park Ave---the other one is at 806 Lexington Ave--both are pretty much as great as the other!!
