Movie Summary:
Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) is sentenced to two consecutive life terms in prison for the murders of his wife and her lover and is sentenced to a tough prison. I'm dying, i have a few years left and I'm only 38. "Get busy living, or get busy dying," is a mantra for me every day. If I'm up to it, i live the best day i can. If I'm not feeling well, i spend a lot of time in quiet contemplation about my life and my eventual death. This movie is so incredible, and it's definitely worth watching on a bad day with a fantastic reaction!!

You don't mention what you are dying from but I wonder if there could be a cure or treatment in the near future. My daughter was diagnosed with flHCC at the age of 23. It was a shocking diagnosis for her and me as well. She is 1 in 5 million. That's how rare this cancer is. A 9cm tumor was removed from her 98 pound body. And it came back a year later. She has now been through 4 surgeries and has been NED for over 3 years. No Evidence of Disease. Not cured. She is changed but living her best life. It could come back. I have felt like she is in a race against time for better treatment to be found. Good luck with your life.

fun fact Red's character in the book was a Redheaded Irishman but the director loved Morgan Freeman's voice so much he made Red's character black, but kept that throw-away joke "Maybe it's cause I'm Irish" as an acknowledgement to Stephen King's Novela version of the character

Also, the character's last name is Redding. In the novella I'm sure the character being a redheaded Irishman definitely contributed to the nickname. But it's cool that it still makes sense as a shortened version of his last name with Morgan Freeman playing the part of Red. My last name is Fitzgerald and have friends who call me Fitz. 😊

Sometimes the "horror" in a Stephen King story is the horror that humans can inflict on another human. So if you look at it like that ...this very much is a Stephen King story. Supernatural stuff aside, Stephen Kings main trait as a writer is his character work

The show was more focused on early elementary school children as Sesame Street was more focused on pre-school children. Hence, many older American/Canadian Gen-Xers have known Morgan Freeman since they were children.

This movie has the most satisfying ending. The scene with Brooks sitting on the bus always makes me cry because he just looks terrified. Props to the actor James Whitmore he is amazing….golden globe, Emmy, Tony, and Grammy winner and academy award nominee. Even with that cast probably the most decorated.

It sounds like a paradox but what makes Stephen King such a fantastic horror writer is that he writes fantastic reality. In his best horror books, he usually starts with reality. He creates a very real world, with people who feel real. Some you will love, some you will hate but all of them feel real. So, when part-way through he drops something supernatural in, it feels jarring and terrifying because everything around it is so real.

Andy began digging his tunnel soon after he came to prison. For close to two decades, he patiently and methodically planned his escape, never breathing a single word of it to anyone, not even his best friend, Red. And when he did finally escape, he got away without problems, cleaned out the corrupt warden's accounts, got his revenge on those that wronged him most, and left behind both money and hope for Red, to give his best friend something to live for. Dude...when you got real at 36:30... Me and my partner have struggled through depression and suicidal thoughts, but helped each other through it. And to just come out with it so truthfully and straight like you did, just hit home that no one knows what other people have gone through or are going through and your videos help me and probably many others, like most reaction channels. The list of people who are on that show is amazing. Rita Moreno, Bill Cosby, Gene Wilder... and they weren't even celebrity appearances, they were regular cast.

The song Andy is broadcasting is from the Mariage of Figaro. It's an opera by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. A good movie about Mozart is Amadeus. It's funny and sad at the same time as his music wasn't recognize until after his death. Thank you for reaction for this movie. It's one of my favorites. I was treated and hospitalized for depression. This is one of the movies that lifted me up. When I got out, I showed this to another patient. She cried and said thank you. I don't know what happened to her after that.

It's cool that you said that bit about "Prison or not, you have to live" because it's one of the points that Stephen King is making in the book. One of the quotes is "It isn't a piece of paper that makes a man. And it isn't just prison that breaks one, either." There's other analogies like that made throughout that talk about the prison of the mind.

I think the real reason for Brooks suicide is loneliness. I mean he is already so old, comes out of jail and has no friends, no wife nor family. Thats why I also think the movie is not about Andy but about Red finding hope (edit: like you also recognized) which he got from Andy, otherwise he would have ended like Brooks. I think most people dont even understand how hard real loneliness is.

"I guess it comes down to a simple choice, really. Get busy living, or get busy dying." Fun Fact: Raquel Welch (RIP), whose One Million Years B.C. (1966) poster plays a significant role in the film, was a big fan of this movie. Music Enthusiast Fact: The opera song that Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) plays over the loud speakers is "Canzonetta sull'aria" from "The Marriage of Figaro" by Mozart. It was Tim Robbins' idea for Andy to turn up the volume of the record player in the scene. Bird Timing Fact: When Andy goes to the library to begin work as Brooks' (James Whitmore) assistant and Brooks' crow, Jake, is squawking, Tim Robbins had to time his line so that the crow wouldn't squawk over him, since the bird could not be trained to squawk on cue. Robbins was able to time his line perfectly by learning the bird's squawking patterns, for which writer/director Frank Darabont praised him.

I’m a 53 yr old from North of Seattle, Washington, and have really enjoyed “adopting” you as one of my favorite young reactors. I never had kids, so it’s fun to “hang” with you. Keep up the good work! Looking forward to many more. There is a Robin Williams movie you would love called The Fisher King. It’s with a terrific cast, and won some awards. This is one of my absolute favourite movies, easily top 5. I rewatch this every year and every time its powerful and resonating, I cry at the ending and I'm not ashamed to admit it. A masterclass in storytelling and acting, every character is memorable, every scene is noteworthy, not a wasted moment, not a single instance of filler. 10/10 movie.

One thing to add about him broadcasting the opera music- these men haven’t heard music in years, moreover, they haven’t heard the beautiful femininity of a lady’s voice in years either. Put the two together, and it had to have been beautiful. He wanted to share that gift with his fellow prisoners. Some of them would never hear instruments like that, nor a woman’s voice again.

If no one has commented this yet, the main guard Captain Hadley, is Mr. Krabs. Also Hank from Detroit: Become Human Also for context about Brooks that the movie doesn’t tell you. They say he was in there for 50 years but they don’t quite make it clear when he got out unless you look at the credits. He was in prison from 1905 to 1954. Not only did Roaring 20s and the Great Depression happen during that time but both World Wars as well and when he got out, The Cold War was just getting started. The quote “The world went and got itself in a big damn hurry” is a huge understatement.

Morgan Freeman was in a kids' show back in the 70's called "The Electric Company". I was born late 60's and I remember seeing him in that show, as I watched it all the time. I liked him immediately ❤

I've been a fan of Morgan Freeman since the early 70's, when he played Easy Reader on the kids' show "The Electric Company". He was a very hip guy in bell bottoms, sunglasses and a scarf around his head, and he delighted in reading words and spelling them. I've heard that was actually not a good time for Morgan, who wanted to move on to bigger things, but he was a beloved imaginary uncle for me. For various reasons, I wasn't capable of the games and physical activities most kids got into at school, so I spent lunches on a corner of the schoolyard reading a book, and I've always wanted to tell Morgan that when a kid would taunt me for reading, I would tell myself, "Screw her. _Easy Reader_ says reading is cool!" I've loved reading ever since, over fifty years of taking Easy Reader's advice. :)

However people need to hear the message that feeling of wanting it just to be over is just a feeling and that you can get out of that bubble. The toughest prison is the one we build in our own mind.

20:30 gotta remember there was no music in prison. This is based in the early 20th century before phones and other devices that you could sneak in. There was radio and tv - not exactly easy to hide. In some states you could have an instrument like have a harmonica but best believe the opera playing over the loud speaker would definitely cause everyone to stop what they were doing

Red was already institutionalized when we first see him. He is not only built a life for himself inside the prison, but he believes that he truly deserves to be there. That is why he is giving the answers that he does at the parole meetings. He knows that it's coming off as cliche and prepared, that they can just tell that he's saying what they want to hear. He's giving the appearance that he's trying but has already resigned himself to being there for life.

Andy had 2 life sentences and would never have gotten out. Although based on a Steven King short story, there was much added in the screen play. For example, Brooks didn't even exist in the story and he added so much to the movie. My all time favorite.

This movie has so many fun details to love For example at 33:50 you can see that Andy cut the hole in the bible to hide the rock hammer in on the page where the book of Exodus starts. The story of how the Israelites leaving slavery.

This is easily a top-10 movie for me. Get busy livin', or get busy dying. It's such a heartwarming story not only about hope, but also redemption. And the scene with Brooks' death is so sad. That visual of him riding on the bus, looking scared and confused as he white-knuckle clenches the bar on the seat in front of him is one of the most powerful visuals of the movie, IMO. This also is a good commentary on the institutionalization of people living in prison for so long. It's very sad on how people's lives are irrevocably changed by long sentences in prison, and then how they are shunned in society when they are released. I'm no ignorant to life, but I'm an ardent believer that once you have done your time for you crime, it should not continue to follow and haunt you for the rest of your life except for very few exceptions.

King is an amazing storyteller. Most times it's supernatural or horror but he has many books and short stories that will break you down. In more recent years he's written a few novels like this that have zero horror or supernatural elements. He's just a master at his craft.

"Maybe because I'm Irish" was a holdover line. The character was originally supposed to be a big burly Irish guy with red hair. (Yeah, kinda on the nose, but it's Stephen King.)

This is one of the few movies that, if it comes on TV, I have to stop and watch it all the way through.

This film and The Green Mile were both directed by Frank Darabont. He did an excellent job with both films. Morgan Freeman starred in a great movie called "Driving Miss Daisy" from 1989. An excellent film that won 4 Oscars. I highly recommend it.

I love this movie. Seen it first when I a young kid on I think TNT. Morgan Freeman is one of the best actors and you’re right, he’s timeless, never ages it seems. Aged like fine wine with an amazing and wonderful voice. I like watching peoples reactions to this movie and the green mile. 3:05

This is a fantastic movie, I have seen this over 25 times, and Morgan Freeman is brilliant in this. This is the best movie NEVER to win an Oscar.

Mr flicks the real reason that the warden made one of the guard’s shoot that young man because he doesn’t want Andy to leave because he gets him all that money not because he called him obtuse MIND BLOWN!!!

Probably the only movie adaptation of a book that is actually better than the book. Frank Darabont did an unbelievable job on this. One of the greatest movies in cinematic history.

@@stevenmclaren2730 I agree about Jaws and The Godfather. I don't agree about One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. As good as the movie it, the book is better. It's one of the best pieces of American literature from the 20th century. I've never read The Shining, so I have no opinion about that book vs. the movie.

The movie adaptation for To Kill a Mockingbird comes really close to surpassing the brilliant book in overall quality. They did add just one scene that wasn’t in the book that adds even more to the story, where Scout asks Jem about their mother and Atticus is overhearing them from the porch. Beautiful.

Andy wasn’t in for two decades, he had two consecutive life sentences, meaning he was never getting out.

There were a lot of supernatural things in this movie. The circumstances, that every important persons came together in this prison. The supernatural patience of Andy and the way forward planning of everything. The knowledge of simple things like stone kinds, that Andy expected from Red to find his Geocache. And then there were the horror elements, that are typical for Stephen King. They are not "in your face", it's always the horror under the surface. Grounded in the character of some people or in some situations. Brooks faced the horror of the normal life outside and he didn't survive. There are so many King typical themes in this movie. It's amazing.

I never been to prison (altough the place that I lived in my teenages looked like one) but I too had my Andy, that made me promised to never give up. I've been thru some hells. But I've never gave up and never will.

The Shawshank Redemption is a movie that inspires you. It moves you to think about how life could be better beyond your current circumstance. One of the few movies I think everyone should watch.

This in my top 10. Great reaction. Ever seen Stand by Me? Also based on a series of short stories by S. King. Also an amazing movie from my childhood. I highly recommend it if you haven’t seen it. ✌️

Loved your reaction and all the little factoids you threw in. Can't wait to explore your channel. So, one thing (or a couple of things) 26:22 -- it wasn't because Andy called him obtuse. Andy effed up (and you saw the IMMEDIATE shift in the warden) when he said he'd never tell anyone about the money. The whole reason the warden doesn't want to let him out is because (a) Andy's the one who keeps his shady deals going and gets the money laundered, and (b) Andy knows enough to get the warden brought up on charges. And that's why Tommy had to die too--because his testimony could have possibly freed Andy. The warden couldn't take that chance. As for it being ironic that he's wearing the cross--I'd go a step further and say it's hypocritical. Thanks again for the reaction--loved it!

At morning roll call of Andy's escape, the guard says cell 245, which was Andy's cell. Stephen King has referred to that number in almost all of his movies.

I first saw Morgan Freeman in "Lean on Me", been a fan ever since. Yep, he was good in that too. Also knew him on tv on the Electric Company.

Jeffrey DeMunn (the Prosecuting Attorney) and William Sadler (Heywood) were both in The Green Mile. Sadler played the father of the two girls John Coffey was charged with murdering. Ironically, two stars from The Green Mile- Tom Hanks (Paul Edgecomb) and James Cromwell (Warden Hal Moores) were offered roles in this movie: Hanks was offered the role of Andy Dufresne, but couldn't take it because he was working on Forrest Gump at the time, and Cromwell was offered the role of the Warden, but turned it down in favor of Bob Gunton.

Oh and one more thing The reason why those guards beat up Boggs up and sent him to the hospital is because Andy got that main guard that had money problems and that’s why they did that
