Army Major Harold C. Sheffield arrived in Japan in 1945 immediately after Emperor Hirohito's announcement of surrender to the allied forces of WWII. He was Commander of the Kyoto Military Administration of the Occupation Forces, and was instrumental in re-building the administration of Kyoto Prefecture together with then Governor Atsushi Kimura.
One of the only American Army officers that spoke fluent Japanese, Maj Sheffield loved filmography, photography, and was a prolific architect and golfer. He worked closely with Sadaichi Adachi to build one of the first golf courses in the country in the post-war period, and completed the Kyoto Kamigamo Golf Course in 1948 which is still owned today by the grandchildren of Mr. Adachi; Masakatsu and Kozaburo Adachi.
Major Sheffield's son, Harold Leo Sheffield, was born in Kyoto in 1949, and blessed at the Kyoto Kamigamo Shrine. He returned to Kyoto in Spring 2024 to visit the Kamigamo Shrine and Kamigamo Golf Course at the age of 74.
In 1950 the Sheffield family departed Japan onboard the USNS General Danial I. Sultan which traveled from Yokohama to San Francisco.
ハロルド・C・シェフィールド陸軍少佐は、第二次世界大戦の連合軍に対する天皇陛下の降伏表明直後の1945年に来日した。進駐軍京都軍政部司令官として、当時の木村仁知事とともに京都府政の再建に携わった。
日本語を流暢に話す唯一のアメリカ陸軍将校の一人であるシェフィールド少佐は、映画や写真を愛し、建築やゴルファーとしても活躍した。戦後、彼は安達貞市氏と緊密に協力し、国内初のゴルフコースのひとつを建設し、1948年に京都上賀茂ゴルフコースを完成させた。
シェフィールド少佐の息子、ハロルド・レオ・シェフィールドは1949年に京都で生まれ、京都上賀茂神社で祝福を受けた。2024年春、74歳で京都に戻り、上賀茂神社と上賀茂ゴルフ場を訪れた。
1950年、シェフィールド一家は横浜からサンフランシスコに向かうUSNSダニアル・I・サルタン号で日本を出発した。
