We thought we'd show some love to the California shelling community and the beautiful beaches there and film an episode on the far west coast. We were lucky enough to have some spare time during a recent trip to visit family there to visit 4 beautiful beaches: Crystal Cove Park(Laguna Beach), Laguna Beach, Carlsbad, and Del Mar. We did not expect to find much, but were pleasantly surprised! We found all sorts of snails, cockles, clams, scallops, sand dollars, and various other shells, and one big surprise find I won't mention and you'll just have to watch. Forgive my rough voice in this video. I was still recovering from Covid when I recorded the narration(which is something else I unfortunately collected on this trip). Thanks for watching!

Carpenteria state beach had tons of those wavy turban snail shells. 🐚 ❤

First clam is a folded littleneck, few cal. Cones then a Nuttall’s cockle. Then broken wavy top snail, then festive rock shell. Wavy top Bean clam, folded little neck, California Venus, pac. calico scallop, great shape sunset clam (great find usually fragile and broken) Washington clam. White sand macoma, calico scallop, folded little neck, Washington, clam, calico scallop, broken Lewis’s moon shell, California, jack, knife, clam, horn shell, California cone, great! Gould’s bubble, purple Olivella, dove shell possibly. Calico scallops, recluz’s moon shell, incised tower, Lewis’s moon shell, and great chestnut cowry. Trash pick up is a must. Cheers.

I was born and raised in Ca. Lived in Huntington when I was little. In the 70s there were so many shells lots of sand dollars scallops clams we actually would go clam digging at low tide. In the mid 80s there was a summer where there were so many live sand dollars they were everywhere. Huntington was my home beach I was there summer and winter walking the beach. In the early 90s the people changed so I started taking my daughter to Laguna. We would go in the morning eat lunch and watch the surfers at sunset. We would go to the tide pools exactly where you were. Great memories of Laguna the marine life is amazing. Not too many shells there though some but rare. My daughter now lives in Clearwater Florida I cant wait to visit and walk their beaches and hunt for shells. Great video!!! Happy shelling.

Super! Yeah for Del Mar! Not too shabby! Loved those colorful scallops, sand dollars and cowrie. All good finds. However, as you've shown, Florida's beaches are treasure chests of shells. I'm about to fill a glass container with my beautiful Florida shells sent to me by a couple of special friends! I'm excited❣

Memories you have of that place very special. Surfed for 15 years and don't remember seeing sea shells. Also that you proposed to your wife on Delmar. Now you're back for shells. Sounds like Delmar has been good to you both. Thank you for sharing. Also did not know CA had sand dollars or coweries. Great finds! 👍👍👍👍

I live in so cali and went to San Clemente and found a chestnut dowry I was excited as you! Sadly not as much shells here but the wavy top shell you found often wash up by the tons in winter.. I have one of those too! Thanks for taking us along!

I really loved seeing these California beaches, I went shelling out there a couple times and I found similar shells, I believe the one at the beginning of the video is a “gem murex”

Thanks also for confirming the shells we found are shells you typically find also. We're headed back out to SoCal in June and we're excited to try shelling there again.

Wow, you really saved the best for last 🤩 that cowrie was beautiful! Congrats 🥳 I understand how rarely they are to wash up; you really found a treasure. Do you think it’s a Chestnut Cowrie? Wonderful find, and I also liked a lot of your big and colourful scallops too. I’ve also been some some disappointing beaches (shell-wise) but just being out there and exploring a new place is a lot of fun too. Thanks for sharing your trips with us!

I agree, it's just fun exploring, even if there aren't a lot of shells. In our next video, we have created a cool thumbnail like you do for your videos. Very cool seeing some shelling in Cali! May I suggest getting some shell books and doing a little research and looking up those shells so you can get them an ID. Also, feel free to add more content in each video. Seems like they're over quickly, and I love the shelling videos, I could watch 30 minutes of shelling easily! I'm looking forward to the next video.

I've enjoyed all of your videos! I went on a vacation to Sint Maarten and found a shell that looks like the tan shell in the first part of your intro. Can you tell me what kind of shell that is?

Hi! Thanks for tuning in. I apologize for the delayed reply. If you're inquiring about the very first shell in our intro section, that's an Angular Triton. Saint Maarten would be an excellent place to find one because it is a Caribbean shell. We find them rarely on the southeast Florida coast thanks to the Gulf Stream currents that carry shells from the Caribbean. That's the only one we've ever found in the 3 years we've been shelling in Florida. Congrats on finding one also!
