Jack Nicolson is so brilliant. His role as Jack should be studied in acting school. They way he changes his demeanour and expressions in microseconds from creepy to murderous to complete rage is something I have never seen before. Infact, I feel a lot of roles done by Jack Nicolson should be studied. Students can learn so much from him

Whenever Jack is seeing ghosts, he is looking at a mirror talking to himself except for the food storage room(but he is only hearing ghost). And also Charles grady and Delbert Grady are different people(Ancestors who repeated the same killing) much like Jack from 1980 repeating his 1921 counterpart.

It also resembles the story of Hercules ans the mayor of caster ridge where the hero loses his family in a fit of rage and alcoholism I.e, negative instincts...overall I find its a masterpiece.

My personal theory (kinda took some hints from the other theories you said) Jack was not just horrible, he was evil , he had always wanted to kill his family. When he said" I dislocated his arm" he wasn't lying, in my opinion he was referring to the time when he tried to dislocate Danny's arm 3 years back and was sure had done the deed but when he got drunk he forgot about it and attempted it again. The first time he had done it, he told Danny to not tell anyone and cured him himself and Danny agreed because he was used to it as jack often molested him and told him to tell no one. He was a mad man who lived in his own world. He wanted a place to unleash his true self and hence accepted the offer of caretaking the hotel. It wasn't the hotel that drove him crazy, he was always crazy killer. The blood signifies what would have happened if they would have stayed there, the mad " murderer " in jack would have killed them. The reason he was writing'all work and no play...' was because he was a man with somewhat serial killers tendencies and he had not killed anyone for a long time or had not started killing anyone which refers to his 'play'. He had now become a full 'dull boy' and was going to kill his wife and kid. If they would have been killed then he would have started his killing spree as a serial killer.

Now I'm gonna see Doctor sleep.

The scene at 10:10 hasn't even been mentioned in the book. In the book, Jack Torrance uses a roque mallet instead of an axe and in the book, there's not a hedge maze but instead hedge animals and they're alive.

I watched this movie on netflix and loved the movie but was confused by the jack on the 1924 photo thanks to haunting tube channel that i got to now lots of detailed theories that I've almost ignored.

I feel that the 'No Ghost' theory can't be the one.... because it doesn't explain how the female lead could see the ghosts in the climax scenes of the movie, nor does it justify John's dialogue of him knowing each and every corner of the place beforehand. I would like to believe the reincarnation theory.. because the movie itself has some supernatural elements, like 'the shining' which Danny seems to possess. Also it must have been one of the ghosts who unlocked John's door when he was in the storage room...so a 'No Ghost' theory doesn't stand a chance.
