J…Wendy is not the worst mother of all time!🙂 IN THE 70’s, women didn’t exactly have a whole lotta say what their husband’s did for employment & had to go along-whether they wanted to or not. She was trapped in that hotel, with no means of contacting another person. Nobody - I mean NOBODY thinks their husband’s soul is attached to the hotel & the other trapped souls are gonna warp his mind, turning him into an axe murderer, ok?!😃 He. Told. Her. He. Was. Going. To. Bash. Her. Brains. In. After she TRIED to get help for Danny. She was terrified. Yet she smacked him w/the bat AND dragged the MF’er into the locked pantry. It was the ghost of Grady that let him out. Not Wendy. Wendy’s a freaking G. As far as Dick Holleran goes: he’s one of my favorite characters of all time. In the book he travels for a day & a half, on a snowmobile(!), in the dead of night, in blizzard conditions just to save Danny. Bc Danny is special. Tony is just the name Danny gives to his ability (he’s a little boy & doesn’t understand) to communicate with spirits & telepathically to alive people who Shine. Stephen King likes to have secondary characters that u fall in love with - the sweet old neighbor or the kind chef who tries to save the day or in Misery w/the sheriff(!)…and then he kills them. So I love Mr. Holleran. But maybe go a little easier on Wendy? She was in an impossible sitch…AND SHE DOES GET HER & DANNY TF OUTTA THERE, so…😉

@tamiwatchesstuff

Great insights here. Wendy was a bit more strong minded in the book, but Jack did wear her self esteem down quite a bit with his drinking and partying over the years.
@smoldragon339
@smoldragon339 Год назад
I don't think you're giving Wendy nearly enough credit, considering that she's been trapped in this abusive relationship for years, probably out of a misguided attempt to "keep things together" for Danny's sake. During the events of the movie, she's got years and years of trauma, gaslighting, self doubt and fear of Jack that she's having to confront all at once, and it can be extremely difficult for anyone to process that kinda stuff. Especially during a life-and-death situation like her's.
@nattyps3160
@nattyps3160 Месяц назад
Plus jack blamed her for holding him back. The line where he called her " the old sperm receptacle" was dispicable. Jack was always evil & the hotel brought it out or gave him the nudge he wanted. He was a drunk who already hurt his son & was a fired english teacher for besting on a student. Basically a frustrated writer who got married had a kid tgen resented them. Sadly many people ger married b/c society will think they are weird or off. Who cares. How many gay men marry have kids than decide yea im.gay bye. Lesbians too ive just hesrd of more gay men doing it. Also jack in the book had a drunken dad as a kid who beat him.& his siblings & it made him nuts his mom would act like nothing happened. Cycle repeated. Sadly. In dr sleep the sequel danny becomes a drunk too.

"Why have they left this little boy with this stranger?" "Why they keep letting this little boy run off by himself?" It was 1980. We left the house after breakfast and didn't come home until just before the street lights came on. Our parents didn't know where we were and we had no cell phones. It was a glorious time! I was 10 when I saw this and it gave me nightmares, but is still one of my favorites. Scatman Crothers' explanation of what "Shining" means was easy for me to understand, so when the hotel started to "shine," it was that much more scarier. Funny you should mention Wendy is the size of Olive Oil because Shelly Duvall went on to play Olive Oil in Popeye, co-starring Robin Williams. And don't be so hard on her. Shelly suffered a nervous breakdown after filming because director Stanley Kubrick broke her while trying to get the perfect take.

The evil that dwells in the Hotel had been working on Jack for a long time, and broke down his mind until they could influence him. The Hotel wants the family but especially wants Danny, since he has the Shine. Which would empower the evil in the Hotel far more than it already has. The loud chanting sounds and the sudden appearance of all the ghosts near the end of the film, are them trying their best to distract and mentally assault Danny and Wendy. Trying to aid Jack in killing them, so they'll become apart of the Hotel. During the filming, Stanley Kubrick told the crew and rest of the cast to avoid Shelley Duvall that plays Wendy. To socially isolate her, and would repeatedly do tons and tons of takes for a scene to wear her out mentally and emotionally. Kubrick wanted her acting to come off as genuine, which it was since she had an emotional and mental breakdown during filming. The pace of filming was also different than other films, to make everyone tired and stressed. Kubrick has many little tricks to try and force the cast to give far better performances than usual. Steven King didn't like the film version, and also had issue with Kubrick being a director, since King believed that an atheist director would not be able to make a film about something supernatural. I don't know, I don't understand that logic, but Steven King was heavily into drugs back then, so maybe that's why he had that view. There is another film, which goes with this one, called Dr. Sleep. Which is based on the sequel book to the Shining. With the film Dr. Sleep, they decided to make a version that would respect both the book and the film versions of the Shining, since they're a bit different, but both iconic in their own right. Dr. Sleep is pretty popular, and they did an excellent job of picking a cast that looked similar to the characters from this film, and did a good job of recreating the Overlook Hotel.

"What's up with the bear costume?!" Deleted scene from the novel. There's an extensive series of backstories for a lot of the ghosts in the hotel, including the lady in 237. In that case, there was a big company retreat to the hotel. A closeted gay man had a crush on his boss, the president of the company. Sort of a Smithers and Mr. Burns type deal. Well there was supposed to be a big costume party on the last night of the retreat, so the guy brought this stupid dog costume for the party. Only when he dresses up and goes to the party, it turns out it's not a costume party, but a 'fancy dress' party, tuxedos and the like. So everybody laughs at him, and he hangs out for awhile pretending it was all a prank on his part, but he realizes what a laughing stock he is, and goes back to his room and OD's on drugs, realizing his crush on his boss will never happen.

This might be the best reaction so far. What gets me about that scene is how precisely the camera follows the arc of the axe. Fucking Kubrick. Oh, and the first time they did it, they had built a prop door that would splinter, not knowing that Jack Nicholson was a volunteer fire fighter. He went through the door like it was cardboard. They had to replace it with a real one.

I can't believe I laughed ALL THROUGH THE SHINING! You kill me 😆 The hotel feeds off the shine. Dick and Jack had it but Danny's was SUPERNOVA-powerful. The hotel wanted to consume all of them but it wanted Danny most. Dead, and in its power. It mostly killed people it could feed on and take their power. In the book, the hotel, or whatever possessed it, was pitting Jack against Danny, saying "he's a young pup ... thinks he's more of a man than his father." Stuff like that. Sad thing is, it was true. Danny had the shining way stronger than Jack, way stronger than Dick. They were light bulbs and Danny was the sun. The hotel wanted to eat him, basically. In Doctor Sleep (SO GOOD, from the casting to the story), they go into how the shine works more, in cool ways. And the remake of The Shining ... was a tv miniseries that was kind of slow. But truer to the book. And Steven Weber, who played Jack in it, didn't look INSANE from go. Like, I don't understand how Jack Nicholson, playing Jack Torrance, ever got a wife. Dude looks bat-ish insane all the time--when he goes nuts and starts trying to kill people, who even is surprised? Literally only Wendy! He looks like he's already killed at least six hundred people! But Steven Weber, in the miniseries, just looked like a regular guy. The kind you root for. And over the movie, he started changing because the hotel was driving him nuts. STARTED looking nuts, instead of looking exactly the same (CRAZY) for the whole movie. That alone made the miniseries worth it for me. Plus, it did a better job stringing together what was going on and what the shine was. ALSO ... the topiary. Like ... I'm not a huge fan of this version of The Shining, nor much of a Stanley Kubrick fan in general, so I'm biased. But in the tv miniseries, they did the stuff with the damn topiary SO MUCH BETTER. CGI helps, I guess, when it comes to animating a giant, lion-shaped shrub and having it chase a kid. Also, the kid who played Danny in that movie could actually act. He had facial expressions. Rebecca DeMornay does a much better job as Wendy, too. Not nearly as helpless and exasperating. Sidenote: Shelley Duvall (Wendy) DID play Olive Oyl in Popeye (1980), with Robin Williams as Popeye! That has been one of my favorite films since I was three! So much fun AND singing. It's crazy and fun. And one of the songs from it was used in a commercial featuring Serena Williams (another GOAT) 😃 I've NEVER laughed while watching either version of The Shining or the sequel, Doctor Sleep. But I damn sure laughed my ass off through this reaction. You're golden!

The whole movie is made to make you uneasy. Not just the obvious stuff; there's tons of little things that keep you on edge. Like that cut in the beginning, when the family is shown the outside of the hotel. They are crossing a little road, and there's a car coming straight at them. Then there's a cut, and the car just doesn't come. Or the impossible layout of the hotel: In the beginning, Jack enters the hotel and goes to an office in the middle of the hotel. And that office has a window to the outside. Or simply a typewriter in the back of the room changing colour. Countless small things that keep you from settling down

Hey there, so I went to music school (a million years ago) and we studied this soundtrack. The opening is an electronic rendition of "Dies Irae," an ancient hymn sung in Latin, also used by Mozart in his Requiem, I believe about Judgment Day (hence the general theme of doom). Later they use Bela Bartok's "Music for Strings, Percussion, and Celesta," which is super creepy with the music-box (celesta) effects and the low timpani glissandos going up and down ... essentially a super complicated soundtrack with a lot of hidden meaning. :D
