Fantastic review of one of my favourite Stephen King books. If you're not so much of a horror fan, I recommend that you check out Stephen King's 11/22/63. It's about a character named Jake Epping who goes back in time to stop the John F. Kennedy assassination. I'm currently reading the book and it is fantastic. Highly recommend it.
This is easily my favorite story of all time. I am reading Under the Dome right now & just bought The Shining and Doctor Sleep tonight! I’m really excited to read those too!
Personally my favorite Stephen king book, due to the writing. I felt it was written more straightforward and simplistic then his other books which have too much detail, slower paced and more intricate plot. You are right he did an excellent job on this book with Character development. But the book is better then the movie and overall this novel is up there as one of greatest horror novels of all time, and can be listed up there besides the classics Dracula and Frankenstein.
@@BookswithBrittany I've seen Doctor Sleep movie the continuation of the story The Shining In theaters of 2019, And even though you may get the spooks of Horror movies, I still suggest you rent the Movie, so you can see what happens after the Overlook, and Danny's life. It's a great movie, only scary in a supernatural way. The book on the other hand is quite slow for the first half, but it picks up in the 2nd half and gets really good and has a good ending to complete the life of Danny Torrance. Movie is better then the book so I recommend movie first.
I am reading this right now and, even though it was so long ago that I saw the movie, I like this much more than the movie. Maybe I'll watch the mini series after I finish the book as I heard it's more true to the book. Thanks for the review!
So I also liked the book but there are two things I completely disagree with. 1) My stance on Jack remained the same throughout essentially the whole book. He has a lot of love for his wife and especially son, but his character has essentially stayed the same, all of it is tainted by his alcoholism and abuse. What we personally think about it doesn't matter, his reputation is tainted by his mistakes which is to be judged by society, his family has both a lot of love and a lack of trust in him. Not to mention his downward descent felt inevitable just in my heart of hearts. 2) I couldn't disagree more about the ending, if anything that moment scared me the most because I thought STEPHEN KING was about to sabotage the entire book. Jack being antagonized makes sense because the whole premise of this family still being together despite his abusive behavior is fundamentally insane, so having his abusive and alcoholic tendencies come out in a cabin fever scenario, where people go insane just by being stuck with other people makes sense. King could have told me there were never any ghost(with a few adjustments of course) and I would have believed him because the entire story is grounded in psychological horror. It was a matter of how the hotel is a haunted place that takes control of the dysfunctional, and it almost got dick, but his understanding and care for the boy who he got to know better than lifelong friends was too strong. It's all about the ghost in our past that make us who we are, and there is no "maintaining" a wasp nest.
@@BookswithBrittany Yes the movie is brilliant in its own right, but much more sinister...Kubrick had no regard for jack's spiritual battle, or his love for his family. Its very cynical, and its essentially watching the hotel over take him and make him evil eating him alive while Danny and Wendy had no chance
I’ve only read The Shining, Pet Sematary, The Long Walk, and The Outsider so far... If I’m remembering correctly lol. One of my 2020 goals is to read more Stephen King!
@@BookswithBrittany I just finished Pet Semetary last night and it was great. Finished The Stand just prior to that. King seems to be, as many have said, King is less about the horror or gore, and more about the dark, dreamlike atmosphere and the twisted, shocking, amazing ending to a story. After Pet Semetary I feel even more like his stories are often like Twilight Zone episodes from the 1960s, which is great because I am a huge fan of Rod Serling. I would recommend The Stand, Revival, and according to most fans, Salem's Lot, It and 11/22/63 which I haven't read yet and are massive, but I can't wait.
@@BookswithBrittany I'm starting Doctor Sleep now and then I'll read The Outsider. I read The Institute last week which I thoroughly enjoyed - a Stephen King twist to a genre that is almost overused, however, he made it feel fresh and I grew quite close with the characters. I definitely would recommend. Misery is also a book which receives a lot of praise for it's characters so that's definitely on the TBR.
@@BookswithBrittany doctor sleep is the sequel to the shining it came out several years ago I also watched the movie adaptation of doctor sleep I absolutely enjoyed it
I gave it 5 stars too. I do think it's very scary, the thing is it is scary in the way books are scary... I feel like horror in movies and horror in books are very different.
