They filmed that one scene so many times, because they could not figure out what Jack would say through the hole in the door. "here's Johnny" was a line that Jack Nicholson improvised, and it turned out to be the right one for the movie.

The Shining is certainly quite a classic. It's one of those films that takes at least 2-3 viewings to understand it. Is it a flashback? is it somebody's dream?. it can leave more questions then answers. And since we are in the frightening season. I would like to offer another thriller. It was made in 1984. It was a BBC made for TV production. I speak of a gripping drama called Threads. vimeo.com/471111084. Something that can be educational and frightening at the same time. You won't be disappointed.

The reason Stephen King doesn't like this movie is because in the book the dad was a much more sympathetic person. He had his flaws, but he fought harder against his personal demons with alcohol and anger, and the evil of the hotel had to work harder to take him over. This Kubrick version Jack was pretty much crazy and the villain from the beginning, and King felt like he ruined the whole theme of his novel. Don't want to give too much away in case you ever read the book or see the tv movie version which was more faithful to the book (and Stephen King approved of that version). The tv movie wasn't that good either. But the book was scary as hell, way scarier than either movie version. Which is usually true of most King novels. I still like think Kubrick's movie is a masterpiece in its own right, I just don't bother comparing it to the book.
@Lethgar_Smith
@Lethgar_Smith 3 года назад
Most novels cant be effectively transferred to film without essential changes to story structure and other elements. The mediums are just too divergent for a word for word, shot for shot, recreation. Stephen King's novel was a deeply personal tale inspired by his own struggle with alcoholism. There would be little reason for Kubrick, as a visionary director, to want to portray that aspect of the story in his movie. The novel serves merely as a template for a classic haunted house movie. Which is all this movie is intended to be. Done with great artistic skill, yet with little to no subtext or allegory. Kubric prefers to tell a simple tale with grand visuals.
@nates9029
@nates9029 3 года назад
Totally agree with you. I actually like both the book and the movie. They are completely different mediums and to me are different stories. I actually prefer the book for several reasons but the movie is good. I did not like the tv movie at all. I also loved the sequel, Doctor Sleep, both the novel and movie. Can't really go wrong either way.
@AdamRee-lx8uh

I appreciate the things you said and I agree with you. I just want to let you guys know that Stephen King changed his mind when he saw the sequel for the “The Shining,” which is “Doctor Sleep.” I am not sure, but this is what I heard.
@Ocrilat
@Ocrilat 3 года назад
@@AdamRee-lx8uh Well, what happened was that in order to get the rights to make the T.V. movie, King had to agree to stop publicly trashing the Kubrick film (though, weirdly, he was still allowed to publicly not like the casting of Jack Nicholson). With those rights he made the T.V. movie, which was embarrassingly bad. With Doctor Sleep (which was also terrible, and lost about $40 million for Warner Brothers), King said that Doctor Sleep 'redeemed the original movie'.

There are a lot of little things you don't notice on first viewing, like 1. the inside of the hotel is bigger than the outside, so it's layout is physically impossible 2. there is no hedge maze in the establishing shot of the hotel 3. this is obviously a ski lodge but there's no snow and they close for the winter. Btw that is true that for the "chopping through the door scene" they ended up going through about 50 doors, and that was a real 20kg fireman's axe and a real door, so the actors really were exhausted and going more than a little bit crazy.
@barret-xiii

They also needed to use the real axe/doors because Nicholson was a volunteer fire marshal for some time, and had the strength and technique to chop through doors. Allegedly the original hollow prop door went down in a single strike.

Adam Baldwin talk about this in a Full Metal jacket documentary, they all were tired ´cause Kubrik made them repeat one god damn escene over and over so Baldwin complained "What the fu...ck does he want!'". Kubrik reply was" Just a little good acting". So Kubik did the same over and over, so Shelley Duvall´s case wasn´t unique.

My theory on why Stephen King really doesn't like this movie is because Stanley Kubrick is the greatest filmmaker to adapt one of his stories, and it's probably the best movie made from any of his writing. BUT it's also one of the least faithful adaptations. Imagine you wrote this story and Kubrick makes a brilliant movie out of it but changes a bunch of things. How can you not be annoyed at that? Decades later the movie is even more highly regarded than when it first came out, that just makes it more annoying to Stephen King I'm sure.

Right off the bat, Jack Torrance doesn't quite sit right with anyone. He seems _just a little_ off. He smiles and he looks evil. He frowns and he looks evil. Even when sitting for the job interview, he just can't seem to stop looking evil. This comes down to the brilliant acting chops of Jack Nicholson. But when Wendy Torrance starts to show fear and despair, _this_ is due, in no small part, to the mistreatment Shelley Duvall suffered at the hands of her castmates and her director. They mistreated her to get her to react this way. This and a few fundamental differences between the story here and the story in the book are the reason Steven King doesn't care for this movie.

Most of these people saw this movie when they were young, so I don't know what they're complaining about. One of the things that is great about your videos is that fact that you ARE young. That's the whole point of the video! You haven't seen these movies yet! We all have! So it's beautiful watching you discover something we all love! Why would anyone want to make you feel self-conscious about that? Eeeew! You know, people, if you have to constantly be pointing out how young someone is, or find yourself complaining about "kids today", maybe it's time to get off the internet, huh, old timers? You've turned into the people you made fun of when YOU were young. How embarrassing. Hey Once Upon A Reaction, this was a GREAT reaction video. you might enjoy watching this again with the idea that there is nothing ghostly or psychic happening. The movie leaves lots of clues that explain quite a different story happening. Kubrick changed quite a bit from Kings book to allow for this. Look out for contradictions in details, like the axe murderers name, how long jack has been sober, when he hurt Danny. You need to keep in mind too that any scenes implying ghosts or shining are from a particular persons perspective and that what they are seeing is not real...for example Jack in 237. that dream/hallucination sequence starts from Halloran lying on his bed, up to Jack backing out of room 237 and locking the door. It's all from Jacks point of view, intrusive thoughts from a guilty conscience intruding on his fantasy of a sexy woman, not Danny and Halloran communicating psychically while Jack sees a weird ghost. Other sequences are similarly manifestations of a particular characters subconscious fears, hopes or realisations. There's lots of little background clues, images that appear in various places to link scenes together as well, like Danny and bears...and the furry at the end...Jack has been a very bad man (you'll see at the beginning of the closing day scenes he's sat reading an issue of playgirl, that famously had an article on the cover titled Incest: Why parents sleep with their children...seriously, no joke). Most of Kubricks films have a secondary thread to their stories that put a different spin on events seen on the screen, some of it is a bit meta, other times , like this, quite grounded and dark but presented a little more abstractly. That's not to sat it's wrong to try and figure out what's happening with the ghost explanation, he took a lot of time to include equally subtle lighting tricks, continuity errors to highlight a supernatural feel to things, because you are meant to see that. The geometry of the hotel is insane if you look closely, the boss's office has an outside window showing daylight, when it's in the centre of the building with an actual corridor where that window seems to be...there's loads more if you look XD )...It's a competent, mysterious ghost story, that also happens to not be a ghost story at the same time.

I was remembering an old story of my father's bout going down to use the bathroom in the middle of the night and sometimes seeing what looked like a man in full mariachi clothes walking accross the patio and disappearing into an old bush on the wall... many years later, that wall was torn down and the skeleton of a young woman was found in there... old family ghost stories ':|

Wonderful watching this movie with you. I think you understood it really well. It's like watching it for the first time with a new friend. Your interpretations are just as good as anyone else's on this particular film

I love your reactions! The shining is a very deep movie to comprehend it all I recommend watching the shining documentary and watching the movie multiple times to see what you missed., I don't know if you noticed or not but the hotel structure and scenery changes throughout the film and it's not a continuity errors

You’re young but your thoughts and theories are very astute. I think you would like DR SLEEP.

Yeah. If you don't sleep you hallucinate, get disoriented. You also have trouble breathing and get very weak and it puts LOT of stress on your heart

You're a lot of fun to watch, I'm not sure if watching a movie with you would drive me crazy, with all the questions or not (lol) but I'm pretty sure your cuteness would override that! Please react to the movie Evil Dead (the best horror everrrrr)

You nailed it it's a psychological horror movie. The horror genre is very open . With different how to put it levels in some areas. Like levels of blood and gore . There is normal , medium , heavy an unrelated basically blood an gore every whare . The reason Stephen King did not like the movie is because it . Didn't stay 100% true to his book but he did get a chance to. Make a version of the movie after agreeing to stop saying bad things. About this version so he agreed an made a TV mini series movie of The Shining . It did not do well on TV I seen both versions . I honestly forgot about his version all to gather .

I’m pretty sure nobody actually has a “gift” that lets them see things others can’t. I can hear things others can’t though; I hear the creepy music from this film all the time. It’s called tinnitus.

It IS easier to live without water than to live without sleep. That is why a doctor has to be present during interrogations when using sleep deprivation.

It wasn't just a hundred takes, it was 3 days they took to film that scene, 100+ or 80 or 60 takes for other scenes like the ice cream scene
