Yes I agree, that mouth-breather kid is beyond annoying and a horrible actor. Maybe if someone lands a good enough punch that mouth will CLOSE somehow.
Hi. As you may have noticed, Episode Two is not out yet. Even though I completely finished it 4 months ago! The video keeps getting blocked because of RU-vid's content ID system, and Warner Brothers even gave me a copyright strike!!! EPIC!!! The video should be out soon however, I'm just meticulously editing it down so the RU-vid/Warner Brother overlords don't hunt me down and shoot me in the street because I used 15 seconds of their movie uninterrupted.
Stephen King not only didn't understand Kubrick's adaptation, but refused to even try. Personally, I think Kubrick's film is the only decent thing to have come out of the whole "Shining" brand.
I’m probably one of the few people who have copies of both the movie and mini series and thoroughly enjoyed both. The movie is the better, more dramatic finished product. The mini series is a better “story” with deeper character development. They both have the same base story, but it’s difficult to fairly compare them since they were trying to do something very different.
King is more "family safe" horror. He doesn't delve too deeply into the dark depths of human psychology. His characters are usually good guys or bad guys and then there's a monster. I get why people enjoy it, it is pretty safe, and King does write some pretty endearing characters when he's on the ball. But there is very little interest in human psychology as a theme in and of itself. Kubrick, on the other hand, is all about human psychology and sociology and that's what he's truly interested in rather than following any horror rules or tropes. But he wouldn't have chosen to film The Shining if he didn't think the text was ripe as a vehicle for those sorts of explorations.
Holy crap dude what timing. I recently watched the Kubrick film and read the book, so the shining has been at the front of my mind. But when I looked into videos about the notorious mini-series, there was hardly anything. This is exactly what I've been looking for, and quality is 👌. I look forward to your growth on RU-vid.
Honestly that was one of the reasons I started working on this project. Couldn't really find any substantial reviews on the miniseries besides the Nostalgia Critic (which I didn't care for) and figured I'll take a crack at it. Thanks for the kind words!

Danny’s mouth and lack of chin are by far the scariest thing about the miniseries. 😱 For the love of god, *that* was the best child actor they could find? Not buying it. Who did the kid’s mom have to blow to get him this role? 😂
Kubrick's "The Shining" was one of my first, as still favorite, horror movies. I own and enjoy the mini-series, and I've read the book. Still, Nichlson is my vision of Jack...
You can see the Kubrick version as repensenantion of abuse in families. Even tho the Kubrick version of wendy is "weaker" its a sad truth of how certain women are trapped in their relationships but can't escape even tho they have time to escape but they are too trapped mentally by their abusers. Even jack in the Kubrick version said you had your whole fucking life to think things thru what a few minutes gonna do for you now!?
IKR? He described her as someone who just screams a lot and acts stupid. Really? Maybe his problem was Shelley wasn't attractive enough. Look at who was castein the miniseries, the beauty DeMornay.
I think Mr. King missed the point behind Kubrick's intentions. Kubrick had no intention of adapting King's novel but rather to use it as a source material from which he drew inspiration to explore a different story. As for Kubrick's casting, he was right that the audience has to believe from the opening scene that Jack has that kind of violence lurking just below his surface demeanor. He wasn't crazy in the beginning, but he was certainly an angry with guy who had nothing but contempt for his wife and kid. The hotel sensed it and used it. Duvall's Wendy is actually perfectly realized but no one other than kind of character would put up with an abusive husband like Jack. A strong willed Wendy simply wouldn't be believable in Kubrick' s version.
I had a couple old bees nest when i was a little kid. I thought they were fascinating. So there is nothing strange about that. Its just part of being a little kid and fascinated with things from nature

Steven Weber and Rebecca De Mornay had thankless tasks as Jack and Wendy Torrance. I thought they performed well enough in their respective roles. The kid playing Danny was the weakest link in the miniseries.
Totally agree. I genuinely like De Mornay's performance throughout most of the series. Same with Weber. Unfortunately most of it comes down to direction and script issues imo.
Weber did his best but he was totally miscast. He's a decent enough comedic actor but never bought him going crazy and trying to kill his family. He was the weakest link because he had to do more actual acting than the kid had to.
That kid was annoying and I couldn't stand the way his mouth was hanging open all the time. Extreme overacting by that kid. Horrible choice for the role of Danny.
I love Stephen King but this miniseries is pure trash. Stephen needs to get over the fact that Kubrick’s film is genius. Stephen is *still* complaining about it; cringeworthy. 🤦🏼♀️

I do have to say though I love "Storm of the Century", which came out a few years later. I assume King was also heavily involved in it as well so I do have to give him credit for that.
@@JoeyMartz True to the book, and being entertaining are not the same thing. Novels adapted to film have to be adjusted to make sense in that medium. But don’t take my word for it. How’s Stephen King’s film adaptation of his own book doing in the public consciousness these days? Not only is Kubrick a better director than King, but Kubrick is a better director than King is a writer. I like some Stephen King books, but he’s written some absolute trash, and is famous for shoe-horning in aliens as the antagonists of his books, even when it makes absolutely no sense.
@@JoeyMartz of course it was "based on" King's novel. Yeah Kubrick changed a bunch of stuff but to say the movie wasn't based on the novel is quite a reach,....no offense. The book is amazing and the movie is amazing. The miniseries......BLOWS!
I can understand King not liking the Kubrick adaptation. Kubrik took King's idea and turned it into his own. And in this process made cinema history. King's TV series, while very faithful to the book, is a total joke... like Scary Movie Part 5 or something
King comes across as a real a-hole in those interviews. If he didn't want someone to reimagine his work then he shouldn't have sold the rights. And to claim that Kubrick made Wendy misogynistic is laughable. Wendy in the book (i.e. his own vision) is weak, submissive, and totally reliant on/reactionary to Jack. Throughout the book, Jack mansplains literally everything to her (including sociology, oddly enough seeing as King writes Wendy as a sociology graduate). King's Wendy is hysterical, she shrieks, she cries, she nags, she panics at everything, she seems to understand nothing, and she's deeply neurotic. Stephen King wrote a Wendy who comes across (using his own words when describing the wind around the Overlook,)as "a woman...in a cheap melodrama". If Kubrick's version of Wendy is misogynistic - then so is King's version. And this series is AWESOME!!! Can't wait for Part 3!!!
Liked and Subscribed. Great job putting this together! Now someone, somewhere can say "yes, there is something interesting about The Shining TV series". I caught a little bit of it on a rerun in a hotel once, of all places. It was a super creepy hotel too, but thankfully it was the TV version, so it just helped take away the creepiness with some good old laughter. But seriously, really looking forward to part 2!
Stephen knows his audience; he wants to frighten children, entice teens, and just entertain/gain acceptance of their parents so they keep buy his books for their kids, but this series fell short in even his own intentions. He was so hell bent on sticking it to Kubrick he ham fisted it and steered it off a cliff. His "aw shucks" stand-up is the key. Your mini series review will likely be the best way to actually experience the mini series itself. Cheers.
Man, the mini series & book are so goofy! I remember watching/reading it but never really realizing it before when you line them up. This was hilarious and amazing.
I saw the miniseries when it first aired and really enjoyed it. I ended up reading the novel as a result. I saw the Kubrick film shortly after. As I was only 14, the more cerebral aspects of the Kubrick film were lost of me, and I just focused on how the miniseries was really close to the novel and the Kubrick film wasn't. At the time, I considered this adherence to the novel proof positive that the miniseries was far better. After eventually discovering how much of a masterpiece Kubrick's film is, I rewatched the miniseries when I was in my 20's and enjoyed it out of nostalgia, but it did not meet the expectations which had been set by my positive memories. It's a rough watch. I can watch Kubrick's film any time and I get the same skin crawling feeling. The miniseries basically just plays out the events of the novel (complete with corny music and 90's television CG) but lacks any artistic stamp. Considering how "cold" the Kubrick film is, the miniseries feels lifeless.
Great dive! IMHO, Kubrick's movie is incredible and he is on a totally different level than Stephen King. And I say this as an avid Stephen King reader. It's an adaptation (because King sold the rights to it) and any artist (writer, painter, movie maker, musician) worth his salt understands how that works. King seems petty and even jealous about the love people have for the film. Kubrick brought us right into the Overlook, King's mini series doesn't even come close. It's campy and cheesy and insulting to the viewer. Furthermore, Kubrick was probably responsible for a lot of book sales for King and you'd think he'd appreciate that and have a more adult and dignified way of expressing his opinion about the genius who gave his story the time of day. Most people would feel honored. But it's Stephen King. So he's going to be a woke crybaby about it.
What worked in writing often do not translate well in film. And Kubrick knew the cardinal rule of film making: the audience’s own imagination is more terrifying than anything committed onscreen. He also knew he need to make changes to keep people who had already read the book to keep them on their toes.
Thanks so much for this, I just watched the movie, read the book, and watched the miniseries a few months back and was super bummed there were not really any lengthy direct comparisons between the movie and the miniseries on yt. This is exactly what I was looking for! A couple of things you were wondering why they were in the miniseries its almost always because it is in the book (ex. the wasps). So I guess for the "faithful adaptation" sake it's in the miniseries.

Can’t wait until we go over the bedroom with Jack and Danny scene and the part with the Bear Man because those were the parts that scared me. Kubrick’s Jack reminds me a lot of my dad in the past (granted a lot worse, my dad was just an asshole), and me and him had many conversations like the one in the bedroom. And the Bear is just uncanny, if you read the book it gets added to it. It makes ya think “what and why is this here?!” and it sticks with you. Couldn’t sleep after that scene as a teenager…

I've never played Doom, but honestly I should get into it because there are many times I need to blow off steam in a more healthy way. Maybe it's cyclical, who knows. If the miniseries would’ve been made within the last decade, it would’ve been a better finished product. A Netflix, FX, or Hulu exclusive would’ve allowed for a bigger budget, TV-MA rating, and no editing around commercials. Movie is the better finished product, series tells the better story and develops the characters more.
The shining is a very empathic film. I think it can be seen as the sensation of dealing with psychopathy. It's a narrow behavioral pattern with specific relational traits, effect on people, and a certain escalating evolution. It's a delusional state of mind. The interaction is surreal and a labyrinth. As a target one feels very isolated, stressed. I think Kubrick paints mostly this. King's version is a parade of poor choices and taste. Tell the f'ing kid to shut his mouth. Once one is blind for that eyesore, King's version is fascinating. This is what you came up with? This is a response to Kubrick. King likes crazy fantastic stories. Escapism. Kubrick does psycho analysis on the nose.
Man, even the assembled Forces of 'Ghosts I-IV' couldn't give these scenes from the miniseries any spooky weight; thankfully, Kubrick was a master. o_0

I haven't seen the mini series, but it's nice to see how faithful they kept it to the story in the book. The movie is an absolute masterpiece, but personally i find the novel better. Also, this video really makes it seem like you've never picked up the book lol. Most of the things you find odd or complain about are all in the book, but were cut out when they made the movie
I'm still watching the video, but looking @7:59 I can already see you've put a lot of work in this review... in most videos about the Shining, content creators use the Bluray as a source, and the tennis ball is inevitably pink (bad color timing in the restoration). I don't know if you've used an upscaled DVD or a downscaled UHD Bluray (with HDR converted to SDR), but either way... congrats for showing that iconic shot the way it's supposed to look! ;) P.S. Now that I've watched the whole video, I'm really lookin' forward to part two. Great anal...analsys (okay, I promise that's the last RLM reference), and a subject I could talk about for hours. I remember watching the miniseries on TV here in Italy when it first came out, and it was underwhelming, to say the least; but looking back, I'm REALLY glad it exists. King could've bluffed all his life about a hypotetical better version of the Shining, doing absoultely nothing to prove it, and fans would've believed him: the miniseries was a self-own of epic proportions. I've read most of his books, and really enjoyed some of them, but let's face it: compared to Stanley Kubrick, he's a simpleton. Nothing bad about it... compared to Stanley Kubrick, I'M a simpleton. But as an amateur writer, I'd feel deeply honored if a genius like him used one of my short stories as a stepping stone to create something much greater.
@@catoblepag honestly you bring up a good point. At least he DID make his own adaptation, putting his money where his mouth is. Unfortunately, it just pales in comparison to one of the best horror films of all time, directed by one of the greatest filmmakers of all time. Totally different leagues. That's why so many of King's film adaptations (with the exception of a few) do poorly critically. He's not a filmmaker. His stories are meant for a different medium. A 1-to-1 adaptation from novel to film is almost a spit in the face of the art if you don't do anything creative with it. Filmmaking is about the presentation of the story, rather than just a bullet-point list of plot beats and story arcs. Glad you liked the video tho! And I'm glad I'm starting to reach the RLM fandom because I watch them religiously and have given me huge amounts of inspiration. Because in the end, it's all about family ;)
@@parkerbreu ...and that's what's so powerful about it. ;) Speaking of RLM, I've started following them since the Attack of the Clones Plinkett review came out (that's ages ago), and I've never skipped a single upload, from the Dudebros ("eat it with your mouth...") to their auction announcements. The funny thing is, even with their current 1.45 million subscribers, they still feel like a well-kept secret; so I think you're right, there's definitely a sense of comradery between fans who "get the joke", and I think you can capitalize on that to get some deserved exposure. I completely agree about the need to betray/change the original material when adapting from book to movie... that's a fascinating subject in itself.

It blew my mind when I went back through their catalog to find out Rich Evans was the one in the Dick The Birthday Boy photo, as I had seen that meme before but didn't realize the connection. This is like comparing apples & Oranges. Two very diffrent takes on the book. I happen to like both for differnt Reasons. I might add that I' like both apples & oranges depending on my mood.
The book - fun to read. Kubrick's film - a timeless, intricate classic that epitomises filmographic intelligence in the horror genre. The Miniseries - the funniest of unfunny jokes. Doctor Sleep - just pain desperate. Just plain awful.

jakc R ing danny isnt a theory or subtext, its the front and centre primary event and theme of the film. there is NO hotel- its a metaphor for a family home, because the film is about domestic violence, jack even says when ullman shows then their rooms 'its very homey', also- the layout of jacks room is exactly the saem as room 237- coz there is no room 237, he fondles danny on the bed... danny is playing with his toys the tennis ball rolls up, room 237 is sexually charged, its just so clear.
Horrible series sorry King. Kubrick may have changed some things but when I watch a Horror movie I want to be scared when I watched Kings version I wanted to cry it was such a Horrible series.
You're comparing a miniseries with a Stanley Kubrick masterpiece. All the grievances you have with the miniseries should direct at Steven King. All was in his novel, even hedge lions. This is the issue King has with Kubrick, he improved King's story.
The references to "Here's Johnny" are cringe as all hell. I like the original scene, but can't stand the parodies of it. That one in the old Simpsons episode would be an exception. I remember watching this mini series, not too far from after seeing the movie for the first time. It was soooooo disappointing. lol

Stephen King should keep writing his little books and let the Master make films. The miniseries is the dumbest piece of crap ever filmed. His book is an interesting story but it lacks the weight and depth of Kubrick's masterpiece. Sorry Stevie but you are a lightweight. I think that is what you resent about the film. Stanley Kubrick elevated a pedestrian novel into something that is timeless.
Kings version would've been ok if it wasn't for the mouth breathing kid. That makes it impossible to watch the show more than once. But I feel the same with the wife in Kubrick's version.
It's literally the opposite. Literally. And that's exactly why the version who shows (the movie) is considered superior - as it's just like you said: "when it comes to telling stories on screen you want to show and not tell"

I tried to read The Shinning book. Talk about a snoozer. Page after page of tired wordiness. Kubrick's shinning blows Kings version WAY out of the water. No competition. I love Jack Nicholson's performance.
Do you not read in general? A lot of books are pretty wordy, not to mention there’s usually stuff that builds the story as it moves along. I guess you could say one of the draw backs of stephen’s work is his writing style and that his shorter stories are probably better in getting the point across. Dont read IT if you’re easily bored of “tired wordiness” even though there’s a pretty big reason behind how wordy it is.
