Happy October! The video is finally up! Only took 9 months to do it... Hope you enjoy this iteration of the series, this one caused a lot of headaches. Part 3 won't be out for awhile, but I have an already completed review of Sleepwalkers (1992) that I'll release later this month for Halloween. Then probably an Exorcist 2 review for the 50th anniversary of The Exorcist special after that? We'll see! Remember to take your medicine... EDIT: I mistakenly attributed the Stanley Hotel to not wanting Kubrick to use Room 217 out of fear of residents not renting the room, while it was in fact the Timberline Lodge, the exterior shooting location of the hotel, who made this request... I apologize for this mess up, I feel like an idiot. Thank you to KevinNott for pointing this out to me.
While i do think its possible jack sexually abused danny, your wrong in thinking there arent any ghosts in the film, and that jack did that to danny in room 237 They explicitly had the only way for jack to escape the freezer be because someone let him out. A ghost. They talk about it in behind the scenes featurettes that it was specifically put in as the one defining moment that undeniably had to be committed by actual ghosts, that could Not be denied by the audience And kubrick himself spoke multiple times on the idea of jack being a ghost that escaped the hotel and took new form and in the end returns to where he “belongs” Ghosts. Are. Real.
Also Danny sees ghosts, Wendy sees ghosts, and Halloran seems to be aware they exist as well. Like I guess jack just deluded himself into thinking Danny saw those two twins chopped up? It’s dumb
Last time I watched The Shining, I felt the same way about the typewriter tantrum scene. After roughly an hour of setup, the plot makes a permanent shift in tone. Even when you know everything is going to go wrong, you're not entirely sure WHEN it will happen until seeing this scene. It just hits you over the head. And, in it, Jack drops probably the best and most emphatic "F-----" I've heard in a movie.
I always had the impression that in the Kubrick film, Jack told Grady he'd read the newspaper articles about Grady murdering his family and then committing suicide because the newspaper article clipping was in the scrapbook he found at the hotel, as this is a big element of the novel and the stupid TV miniseries. However, Kubrick's film doesn't draw any attention to the scrapbook, it is just seemingly lying on the table next to his typewriter at one point.
I really love your videos and I can't wait for part two. Even though I like your theories and subscribe to them, I think it's hard to deny that the narrative doesn't feature any paranormal forces. Especially with Wendy witnessing the ghosts in the end and the shining powers itself. Still, hope I will see part three soon :) Great work. You're a great talent.
55:56 I believe it was the Timberline Lodge, the exterior shooting location for Kubrik's film, that requested the room number change from 217 to 237. According to the Timberline's website, they had been concerned that "future guests at the lodge might be afraid to stay there" and asked that the number be changed to a nonexistent room. I believe Rob Ager covered the topic in his video debunking the moon landing nonsense. The Stanley Hotel, on the contrary, never shied away from the publicity. Regardless, 217 is still the most requested room at both hotels. Excellent video!
I think the theory about Danny being sexually abused by Jack is a stretch. there is extensive background info by the makers of the film and nothing suggests as much and even in the film you really have to stretch the interpretation. great video tho
Aw man I was lucky enough to see this video when it was posted before, then I went to watch it again and it was gone. Hopefully this one stays up and there's no more issues!
You're back! Another fantastic review! ^^ Looking forward to Part 3 whenever that releases (no rush though, these videos clearly take a lot of effort to make)
11:26 This scene is cool because it looks like CG even though it's not. They supposedly took the model that Jack is gazing at and superimposed an overhead shot of Wendy and Danny walking through an apartment complex. For the buildings themselves, an image matte was used to make them appear like hedges. They must have also duplicated the shot of the model to make it look so expansive.
I haven't watched Part 1, and maybe you clarify this there, but you seem not to have read the novel. I mean, you're confused about plot points in the mini series that are unmistakably explained in the book, and you seem to give Kubrick credit for things that he took from King's novel, as if they were original to Kubrick.
30:17 Wendy wants to F**K! I laughed at that way harder than I probably should have. It was so sudden and over the top. I love the film, never saw the miniseries and now I see that that was a wise choice. Thank you for putting yourself through this so we don’t have to. We get all of the laughs but none of the trauma! On a separate note; it’s so stupid that I have to censor my language so my comment doesn’t get deleted. What are you doing RU-vid? 😖
NIN’s was the perfect choice of music for that whole segment. I do think you could’ve used the theme song from Benny Hill when Jack was flailing around in the snow with those oh-so-scary hedge animals. 😬
The main reason I don't like the miniseries is because it's way too long. If it were shorter, the so-bad aspects might be more fun, but it just goes on and on and on. This reminds me of King's longer novels that I always (always!) wish were more tightly edited. Also, the tendency of King to explain every little detail (Jack was abused! Now he's an abuser!) undercuts the horror, ala how later versions of Halloween tried to rationalize and explain how Michael Myers became a serial killer (snore!). Nevertheless, I can see the temptation to bring back the hedge animals- they were scary AF in the book! But they turned out to be just like pictures in a book that can't hurt anyone ...
I disagree with the "Danny's Ordeal" theory. Danny's hand was in the same position the whole scene.Danny was in the room and Jack was asleep at his desk having the dream. Idk. Not enough evidence to me. I think Stephen Webber really tried. 😹😭
I watched this once when it first came out on dvd. The kid was a terrible casting choice. I kept staring at his teeth in every scene. You convinced, i am throwing my dvd copy in the garbage
Native Americans were going bye bye either way and the white man takes all the blame for it. That's our burden, I guess the Chinese or Japanese would have been more benevolent coming the other way because they've proven to be so peaceful and tolerant.
