I thought I'd finally found a fun upbeat song, but as I looked at the lyrics and really thought about the meaning, and then eventually looked up the meaning by the shins themselves, I realised how sad and relatable this song is to me. Now I listen on repeat for a different reason

You ever really like a song from a band and for whatever reason you don't look into what else the group has done? That's me with The Shins. I feel foolish. I loved the songs used on the Garden State soundtrack..(Caring is Creepy and New Slang) which I still listen to, but never looked into what else these guys did. I love this song and many others I heard for the first time just this year. At 55 I'm finally learning.

James Mercer is a better melody writer than Lennon/McCartney. Paul can write a catchy pop song with musical integrity, but James has the ability to make you openly weep while singing along. Fuck me this is a good song
