Charizard would absolutely still be super popular without its shiny, and Mega Charizard X double proves it. Same with Greninja.

id like to interject that shinies are a easy and clever way for game freak to add extra content for more devoted players and even if not all the players hunt for shinies it doesn't really matter because theyre just simple palette swaps not costumes that need to be sprited

Neither side considered the actual gameplay value. At no point does having a shiny make the core gameplay any better. It's still the same, you just have a pokemon with different colours attacking for you. A shiny pokemon is as useful as any other regular pokemon. It's only there as an easter egg that's continued into the future games, as, if i remember correctly, Shiny Pokemon wasn't even an intended feature, but a bug that was then complimented as a proper feature. Also for every gen up to i think 6, all shinies were basically pallet swaps - but from gen 6 forwards, each shiny had to be individually designed.

Shinies are useful. They add to the replayability value of the game. Literally any player would go back to play if they heard that there's some kind of shiny event going on. Specially if it is one with a really good shiny or a pokemon they really like. Max raid den events in SwSh are a clear example of this and they're even based on specific themes for the event (like shiny ghost type pokemon events for Halloween). Some shinies look so good that they're even used as the prize for online competitions and since gen 6 (when the shiny color designs started to be selected by the designers) they also add to the lore of the pokemon since many shinies are references to the concept of such pokemon (Like Greninja's black shiny, being reference to his ninja concept). They've been also used as important plot points like the red gyarados from gen 2 that became like that because of team rocket experiments to control pokemon and as incentives to play in certain battle facilities like Black Tower and White forest from gen 5 where after completing the challenge you get specifically a dragon type shiny since your final opponent is Alder's grandson (Benga) and the max lairs from the crown tundra in gen 8. So, yes. Shiny pokemon are indeed useful.

And I would like to point that it seems obvious (at least to me) that the sentence (0:14) was about the in game part of the debate, not the irl part. So we're back to the point that shinies really don't have any use in game, therefore the person who was Phoenix was completely right.

in my opinion shinies are super fun to hunt and obtain but at the end of the day theyre useless and just regular pokemon

Honestly, watching this video and reading the comments, all of the non shiny arguments are incorrect with their argument, because they all make the same flaw with their points: There is no objective way to play Pokemon! There are many different ways to play Pokemon for fans of new and veteran alike. There's Competitive, which are more focused on the stats of Pokemon, making sure that each Pokemon they use are trained to the best of their abilities. To them cosmetic changes would be something that would be rather pointless. Then there's Speedrunning, who are more focused on finishing the game as fast as possible. Not only would shiny hunting take up time, but the shiny animations would eat up more time. HOWEVER, Speedrunners would also find looking for the most viable Pokemon "pointless" too, since they would only need to find a Pokemon of any stats and would use that just fine. Taking time to get the best stats would ruin their times and the point of Speedrunning. And of course, there's Shiny Hunters, people who are determined to get their favorite Pokemon or as many as they can in shiny form. It's not about the stats or time, but the dedication of persevering and finding each of these Shiny Pokemon is the enjoyment of playing the game for them. The point of Pokemon is taking the components of the game that you love and having fun with it. If there's a goal for a player, then there's a use and point for it. It's not the same for everyone. The argument isn't whether Shinys are necessary, it's whether they are useless. Which for this reason, is why the non-Shiny team is wrong. If people have a reason to play Pokemon for them, then they're useful.

I once tried to shiny hunt, but after 1000 resets and hours of doing it, I said "what the fuck am I doing?" and stopped. Since then, the idea of people spending literal days to find a cosmetic color swap is just ridiculous to me.

Shiny hunting is both one of the most mind-numbing and exciting experiences in a video game. I got a shiny Lugia after two weeks, 7,025 resets, and 3 Lugia-related dreams, and finally encountering it was surreal and amazing.

Man, out of all the Pokemon games I have, I have the most in Ultra Sun. I only have 1 in black, which is a Solarock, and 1 in Soulsilver, which is the infamous red gyarados at the lake of rage.

If it took actual effort and skill to get a shiny then sure you earned it and that would be satisfying. On the other hand I can see somebody go out of their way to spin in a circle in the tall grass, only to fail miserably when they see the shiny pop up after hour 3. It's a good argument, even for somebody like me who would rather not play pokemon past 2nd gen, my brain is too smol to remember 1000+ pokemon.

Here's my opinion on the "evidence"/points provided. 1 Shinys are useless: While Shinys retain the same stat spread of their non shiny counterparts, that doesn't make them useless. A shiny can act as a "living" trophy, (either from randomly finding one or hunting one) and are (for the most part) nice to look at. That said, it is true that a shiny is statistically no different in battle then a non shiny. (Well, no more different then 2 non shiny pidgeys would be from eachother) 2: " you enjoy finding Shinys less the more you find". There is always a rush of joy when you randomly encounter a shiny, and even more so when your hard work hunting one pays off. That said, I do have to admit, when I was hunting a full team of Shinys for my UM playthrough, my reaction for finding a shiny did go from "holy F*** $#!%, Woot!" To "Yes! Next." And when I finished the hunt I mention below, it was "Finally!!! I'm free!!!!!" (Extatic to finally have that hunt ended) Final notes:Shiny hunters are insane. If they're not going in, they definitely are when the hunt is over. Spending hours/days running in circles just to find a albino? (best quick explanation I can give) yeah, insane. (A definition of insane doing something over and over and expecting. A different result) (fyi. I'm speaking from experience. 3 weeks of hunting a starter tepig in pkmn black got really mind numbing after the first week, and I was acting kinda like king Zog from disenchantment by the end. Yeah, I started on the 1st Monday of a month, and the hunt ended on The 3rd Tuesday! And yes, that's my longest hunt. My second longest was ho-oh in heart gold at 3 days (Sunday morning to Tuesday night). In short, if you want to shiny hunt, use one of the alola games. With the mesuda method (two pokemon from different languages, ie English and Japanese , being bread together) plus the shiny charm (easiest to get in gen 7, with its smaller pokedex) iv been able to get 0-2 Shinys every 1-4 days (depending on luck and how long it takes to lay and hatch a batch of 180 eggs (6 of boxs full)))

Shinies just aren't worth it. The only thing special about them is the amount of time and effort it takes to find them. It's just a pallette swap, most of the time not even a good pallette swap either. A good chunk of them are just a slightly saturated/de-saturated version of the original and another decent chunk of them are the gross bright green on everything deal. Maybe if there was a bit more effort put into them it'd be cool. They're mostly a waste of time and regional variants are a better concept in almost every way possible.

I was in the crown dlc, I was in a call whit my friend and I was trying to find a legendary Pokémon, when I found the Pokémon I saw that it was a little different and y afterward hear the “shiny noise”. I freaked out because it was my first shiny and it was also a legendary. Why does this matter to you? Idk 🤷🏻‍♂️

its just a recolor. i don't really see what's so special about a recolor. sure its nice to have one, but still. making a recolor so rare is just to make sure people spend multiple hours on a game. it's not that i don't like shinies, they are good but they don't even have some sort of buff to make it worth it. i think im mostly in the middle area

But aren't shiny Pokemon just akin to being an albino? It's a rare disorder that doesn't help the survival of the Pokemon at all. If they were real, they'd have shorter life spans and over-all weaker stats, while being higher maintenance. I wouldn't go around showing off a deformed Pokemon like that in the same sense I wouldn't wanna show off a discolored baby like it's my pride and joy. From a gameplay perspective, they were just originally a bug that then became a pallet swap for each Pokemon. Initial stats could be higher or lower than another wild Pokemon of the same category and nature. By the time you found a shiny Pokemon, you've already caught the original version multiple times and never really use it since it's so much weaker than your base team. They don't learn any special moves. They don't have a special growth in stats. They have no special "shiny-only" nature. And most pallet swaps are ugly compared to the original - they have disfigured colorings. There are very few who's shiny version makes you go "Oh dang, that's the coolest color!". Shoot, some you really don't notice if you don't see the bling from it being introduced to the battle field, like Pikachu. He's just SLIGHTLY more yellow. Also, the shiny you find is never the one you're looking for. Why would I want a shiny LuvDisc, what purpose would that serve me? I don't even use my normal LuvDisc. I threw it back into the wild after learning how bad it was - didn't even deserve a spot in my box. Lastly, if you're gonna gloat about a shiny Pokemon, chances are you're not transferring it over from one generation to the next. It'll rot in your PC box and have served literally no purpose. If you're gonna try to flex on someone in the Pokemon community, that's a very niche genre - considering most of the Pokemon community is about the battling. If your Pokemon ain't strong, it's the northside of useless. A shiny Pokemon you didn't even initially want, is there for the quick "OOOH! It's a shiny Weedle!" and then literally that joy fade into nothing afterward. If you had to hack a shiny, it wouldn't give you that same initial joy... So it would be utterly worthless. "See, I got a shiny Girantina~" - "Congrats I guess? It still got one-shot by my Mewtwo...". Shiny aren't worth the look around unless you're bored with no time to do anything else in life. If you get one at a random encounter on your journey, great. You got a slight jolt of joy that lasted all of 4 minutes. If you didn't and you're gonna spend time looking for it after you've completed your Pokemon take-over... Well, I guess that's extended gameplay for the most dedicated of us - you must really want that albino version of a Pokemon to do that. Shiny Pokemon are useless.
