The Thai-Burma Railway (infamously known as Death Railway) was built during WW2 by prisoners of war and forced labourers under the brutal control of the Japanese Imperial Army. In this video, we explore some of that history.

Thank you Paddy. You presented this very well, with sensitivity and respect for the fallen. Good job.👍 I visited Hellfire Pass just last month (August). I have been to the infamous bridge 15 years ago but didn't get to come here at that time. I walked through the Interpretive Centre and could not hold back the tears. For Australians, Gallipoli is a sacred place in Europe. Hellfire Pass is Australians' sacred place in Asia. Thank you for making this video. I will definitely share this on.

I remember visiting the Bridge over the River Kwai and felt an eeriness of sadness there. You couldn't help but think of the pain those poor prisoners would have gone through. Thankyou Paddy for bringing more awareness to this area and the history that came with it.

Paddy - What a great episode. I have been here a few times and always get a bit emotional. I haven't been able to make it there this trip, but plan to go back there again next year. I have also stayed in the raft houses which are absolutely beautiful - เพลิดเพลินไปกับการเดินทางของคุณ

Work was 24/7. POWs had to work at night as well with carbid lamps: These were interpreted as hellfires. From these night glowing lamps it got its name from

For me, visiting the museum, prison area and other sites were informative and emotionally sad. I detested the visitors that would cheerfully take selfies on the bridge; for me, the bridge of the River Kwai should be treated as a memorial- not as a tourist trap for smiling selfies. btw Good job Paddy. I would have mentioned how Thailand was an ally of Japan at the time; thus, the Japanese were allowed to use various facilities in the country ( True, the Thais had no choice)

@@_Alfa.Bravo_ IIRC Thailand did ally with Japan in order to not be militarily attacked and defeted. Thailand was also to declair war on Japan's enimies, and did enough to satisfy the Japanese, but did not deliver written declarations of war. I know, all very confusing and grey area political stuff. In a pragmatic way Thailand did what was deemed necessary to survive in a bad situation.

From my point of view, people in the past probably didn't know who was a friend or a friend. It was a continuation of Western colonialism and Thailand lost some of its territory. But at the same time, Thailand used to fight with Japan before negotiating for a transit route.

Hi Paddy so when you bought your train tickets you sai 4 foreigners and 2 thai so I am assuming that the price is not the same depending on your n ationality? I did not know that 3 words game you were playing in the train pretty cool game.

she's not responsible for the actions of those at the time....why make her feel uncomfortable. The Thais do a fantastic job in looking after the Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery there, we should celebrate that instead

I agree. I thought her response was very lightweight. "No Thais were involved in this so it's a tourist attraction!" So, it's normal to witness all this horror in your country and turn a blind eye? I don't think so.

We were more forced into an alliance more than a voluntary one. Thais were also used in forced labour during the construction on other parts of the line and held no authority over the bridge. Although we had were in an alliance in practice it was more like an occupation.

⁠⁠⁠@@rikiruru1076The horrors of the construction were never ignored or turned a blind eye to. There are actually plenty of memorials and solemn reminders of the atrocities committed. Think of it like Auschwitz, a lesson on humanity.
