Everyone is saying “you need conical wheels” but the real answer is that you need both conical and flanged. Im sure if you show up with a decent bottle of whiskey im sure someone could hook ya up. They run about $1,3000 CAD brand new. So maybe a couple bottles. Scrap yards maybe? Well, your comment provided a quick bit of self-shock therapy for me. I read your post and was like, "ppft, why does this guy have TWO girlfriends. " I don't know if it was jealousy or anger at the idea. 10 seconds later, I realized the nonsense of it all and y'all were just some ladies hiking... I though the whole experience was interesting, so a few sentences up, I decided to start telling this whole little adventure, that happened right here. On this very RU-vid video, in the comments, under a post by @intotheether3803, where she was detailing an account of hiking on a 100+ degree weather that day day. Her post was followed by some laughter at the memory and nostalgia, before being left to be found 2 weeks later, by some gentleman thinking that her post was a humble brag / blatant lie about have 2 girlfriends and/ or hiking. I was that very same gentleman. I decided to turn the whole ordeal into a creative writing assignment to offset and hopefully correct whatever strange response that was initially incited by an innocent memory. One holding a trove of happy experience, despite taking place in a 100+ degree weather that day day. On a side note, in another book, yet to be written of wants and adventures. I want a train trail cart also. It's a great idea, and I hope it materializes in my future reality. With an expression of thanks, JG Zergherder

Curves: different velocities on each side due to the difference in the radius of the curve for each track. Each track forms a imaginary circle, the one on the side where the curves turn to, is smaller thus it has less path to to through when compared to the outter path. This causes the wheels to try to rotate in different speeds. Conical allows the wheel radius to be different in each side creating a compensation for the difference in speed. Not only that, they help with alignment and other things.

If you can't find or afford railcart wheels, think about using the front wheel rims of a garden tractor or riding mower. They should ride over the rail with enough clearance to allow for the difference during the curves in the track. The noise can be dampened by wrapping the metal to metal contact area with rubber. For those of you who are interested this is the former San Diego and Arizona Railroad or otherwise known as “the impossible railroad”. It got this nickname from how hard it was to build the line. The railroad almost pretty much lost all of its presence when the southern pacific (who owned it at the time) started dieselizing it’s roster and fading out the steam locomotives. The line was abandoned in the 70s by the sp and to my knowledge it’s been pretty much dormant ever since The SP abandoned it in. Not much survives of this railroad par a 2-8-0 consolidation #104 (which is in terrible condition), a few railcars, and Southern pacific 4-6-0 #2353 which, while not owned by the sd&a, frequently operated on the stretch of line. If you want more there’s wiki articles and some well done books about its history on Amazon. I would write more but writing a RU-vid comment on a phone is incredibly hard when you have to go back and forth between sentences.

Even better than Conical wheels are train wheels that are curved, so that as it rests on the track, the train wheel will hug the track that it is resting on. This design is used on the Shinkansen railway trains in Japan and offers the smoothest train ride ever because it's more stable when going around curves. The reason your old wheels broke apart so easily is because they are sand cast ones which will not hold under tension that is applied to the metal and the flange and wheel aren't forged as one unit. The other thing I would like to point out is that you need your axles to pivot left or right so that it can move in the direction with the curve.

Dude, even if you didn't find the bridge, you didn't drag your friend out there on a worthless journey. You shared one hell of an adventure with your best friend. Sometimes that is just as good as what you are searching for in the first place. And the cherry on top is that you actually did find the bridge when you thought the journey was over. You kept pushing just a little more and you reached your destination because you refused to quit. Hell yeah. That being said, next time please plan a little better and put a little more time into your cart.

Conical wheels would have made it worse, he just needed to pay attention to securing the wheels on the axle at the correct gauge like maybe welding them to the axles perhaps. Then yes conical wheels would have helped a lot which could be done in about 30 minutes on a lathe. What made me laugh was thinking you need cell service to use GPS also maybe having a real map and some supplies maybe a tent and camp out or just in case you get stuck. This was a truly half arsed adventure from a half arsed adventurer but it was worth the watch whoever this guy is.
