Here I unbox a brand that really needs no introduction as one of the world's most reputable shoemakers today: Crockett & Jones, of England.
As they have two collections, benchgrade, and handgrade, I will have two videos highlighting a mode from each collection and speaking on the differences between the two.
The first was their benchgrade collection, highlighting their very famous Cavendish model. See a few videos back.
Here we have a look at their Handgrade collection and what makes them top of their class.
For more information on C&J shoes, please refer to their website: www.crockettan...

I've brought C&J shoes and boots for years, some of the best shoes on the market for the price. Currently waiting for a pair of custom James to be made.

Thanks for your videos! If you have the time and models handy, could I suggest doing a comparison of: - CJ HG, EG, GG, Santoni, (c.$1k) wholecuts - Suede/leather penny loafer (Piccadilly, boston/harvard/cadogan, etc) - Your loafers vs CJ BG, CNES, Carmina, etc

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the handgrade line! I love the shoes. Unfortunately, the lasts of the handgrade line do not fit me.

Justin - Thank you for another excellent video and review! I very much appreciate your approach as someone who loves fine shoes combined with someone who really understands the art and science of how shoes are made, merchandised and eventually sold. I hope you appreciate how unique this perspective is and just how great your content is. I own multiple pairs of C&J benchgrade shoes - They are tanks and all have either Dianite or Vibram soles. Mostly worn for work when the weather is bad or when I’m out of the office. I also own one pair of hand grade oxfords, the Audley, in dark antique. In my non-professional opinion, C&J hand grade shoes are quite different from bench grade their bench grade line. They may not have the design flair of EG, and certainly not the beauty and craftsmanship of G&G stock service, nonetheless they are lovely shoes and as you noted, impeccably made. One question: You mentioned you thought the handgrade leather was crust - Is there an easy way to identify crust leather when it’s not specified? I look forward to future reviews and learning more from your experience. Keep it up and stay safe. Best, Steve

Hey Steve thank you for your comment and sharing your thoughts as well as your support. I do appreciate it. Crust leather is usually has variation in the finish. Its not a flat look like box calf is, always monotone in color without any variation. Crust leather will usually have different depths of color in it. At the same time crust leather will usually not be as strong in color saturation either. Hopefully that explained it. Usually you start to see these things with years of handling both. Crust leather is always softer and more pliable, too.

Great review sir - I’m a massive admirer and owner of Crockett and Jones. One other difference between bench grade and hand grade is a “Gentleman’s corner” on their hand grade shoes.

Very slippery looking. I have had few crockett Jones shoes before. I had to sell them. Because the weather in uk is very rainy and not friendly to super soles . But the quality is superb no question. Have ever you been to Northampton Justin? The Northampton university students are very creative and their bespoke shoes are very well made...good video my friend as usual. And Edward green are not far off from university of Northampton...

Never actually been to Northampton. But been to Kettering many times when visiting my friends at G&G. Leather soles can be tough In the UK with all of that rain. Slipped many times in London myself ;-)

Hi Justin, in terms of "niceness" or "fineness" do you think C&J Handgrade comes anywhere near the level of Edward Green, or would you say it's clearly a tier lower?
@theshoesnob_official
@theshoesnob_official 3 года назад
In terms of fineness it is comparable. I do find EG shoes more robust though. Nto sure if that is better or not but they feel more substantial. I also prefer how their lasts fit. But C&J handgrade finishing is top notch. Just as high as many shoes far more expensive.
@mnamesjeff9198
@mnamesjeff9198 2 года назад
In your opinion, is the quality increase of the hand grade worth paying the additional price?
@theshoesnob_official
@theshoesnob_official 2 года назад
That is quite subjective. I feel that if the last fits you better than yes it is as the leather is nicer and the details are there. Overall it is a better shoe, especially if the last fits one better

Hello Justin, appreciate your works. Quick question please you said, all grained leathers are all corrected leathers (e.g. C&J scotch grain) Does this mean that this C&J scotch grain leather are being sanded THEN stamped? Or only stamped? With No sanding? Since this uses thicker hides, does this mean hides from older cows? Thanks for clarification. Appreciate your time.
@theshoesnob_official
@theshoesnob_official Год назад
Grained leather is just stamped. There is no need to sand it when you are stamping it. As per if it comes from cows as opposed to calves well that is a good question I dont know the answer to. But, grained leather is not inferior by any means fyi. Corrected is always bad. It is bad for someone looking for pure leather for a dress shoe but not for a pair of durable boots for Winter. Its all about perspective.

Unrelated question. From your own brand, if we order from EU, do you ship within the Union? Or does it always come from the US? Thinking about duties. Thanks!
@theshoesnob_official
@theshoesnob_official 3 года назад
Unfortunately it always comes from the US. I no longer have a company that can be invoiced and ship within the EU. Everything must come to me and then be exported. Hopefully one day I will have an EU branch.

So are saying those shoes are Blake stitched, Justin, and if so, do they lack cork in the sole?
@theshoesnob_official
@theshoesnob_official 3 года назад
No they are goodyear welted and have cork. C&J only makes goodyear. What made you believe I was insinuating they were blake? Because I said the finishing was flawless?
@markdougherty1636
@markdougherty1636 3 года назад
@@theshoesnob_official Because during your presentation you stated that Blake stitched shoes are sleek looking since the sole fits closer to the vamp, this as you looked at the sole.

for all that I enjoy your content, its a shame that your retail leg didn't respond to my email when I suggested that your shoe tree sizing was significantly off. I bought a bunch of size 7 UK trees (the red wooden finish). They don't fit in just about any size 7 crockett, alfred sargent or size 7.5 gaziano. They only fit in huge clumpy 7's from cheaney, loake and trickers. I'd suggest your trees are a solid half size too large for their intended purpose. I couldnt even fit one into a pair of 7UK 337 crocketts (which isn't the tightest last). My concern and comments went unanswered. Won't buy again.

Who did you write this to? The www.theshoesnob.com ? I answer all emails. But if you bought at www.theshoesnob.com I do not own nor control that company. So your judgment is misplaced. I only sell my trees from J.FitzPatrick Footwear
