Hi Dawn, love the reaction. In real life, Jimmy Stewart and Margaret Sullavan knew each other before making it in Hollywood. Jimmy was madly in love with her. Sullavan thought of Jimmy as a brother! Jimmy Stewart was roommates and best friend of another classic Hollywood actor, Henry Fonda. He was the conscientious juror in "12 Angry Men". Sullavan and Fonda fell for each each other and got married. It didn't last very long, but Jimmy and Margaret never got together. Margaret Sullavan was quite the gal. She was the only actor who put the fear of God into one of old Hollywood's most feared studio heads, Louis B. Mayer. In those days they ruled like tyrants. Can't wait for your next reaction!

Jimmy Stewart was a terrific actor. A lot of people compare Jim Carrey's more serious roles like The Majestic and Eternal Sunshine to him. If you haven't seen it, a good one to react to for the channel for Christmas is It's A Wonderful Life. It's one of my favourite Jimmy Stewart movies, along with "Harvey," about a guy who has an imaginary friend. He was also a protege of Alfred Hitchcock and was in, most notably, Vertigo. Around this time it was customary from American actors to adopt a kid of mid-Atlantic accent or a stereotypical New York/gangster accent, but Jimmy was from Indiana, Pennsylvania, and never lost the accent. He was pretty much the "everyman" of film actors in his time.

As an old man, I really congratulate you Dawn. So many young people (including youtube reactors) don't want to watch old black & white films. Many of the greatest films ever made were back then in the days before special effects, etc. They concentrated on the story, dialog & good actors. Many of today's films are actually re-makes of the old ones...like this one. I especially loved your appreciation for the Marx Brothers. They were unique....nobody can compare to them, in my opinion.

I always tell younger folk: I grew up in black and white. We got our first colour TV about 1975, and it was kind of neat for a while, but the novelty soon wore off for me. The very first thing I did when I moved out on my own about ten years later was buy a black and white TV, which were dirt cheap at the time. I have a pretty extensive collection of movies, and the majority of them are black and white - it's the only way to go!

He's also in another Lubitsch movie, "To Be Or Not to Be", which is another highly recommended one from me. This sweet, simple movie, based on a play, was a love project for the director, the great Lubitsch, whose father ran a small shop. You can feel the affection for theses people and their lives running through the script and the tone of the movie. Everyone is so real, so human, so someone-you-know. It feels perfect. It may not be, but I can't think of any way, offhand, that it isn't.

Jimmy Stewart was not only a great actor, he was a greater patriot. Stewart entered the Army in 1940, just before the US entered WW2. After a year training new pilots in New Mexico, he was finally sent overseas to fly B-24 Liberator bombers over Nazi-occupied Europe. At a time when air crews were expected to be killed between eight and 12 missions, Stewart had flown 20. He was stationed in Europe through the end of the war, receiving two Distinguished Flying Crosses, four Air Medals, a Presidential Unit Citation and the French Croix de Guerre. Although World War II might have ended, Stewart stayed in the Army, and later the Air Force when it became an independent branch in 1947. He continued his service in the Air Force reserve, flying missions in B-52 bombers. He even flew as an observer on a bombing mission during the Vietnam War. He retired as a brigadier general from the Air Force in 1968.

Other great black and white Christmas films are: “The Apartment” “The Bishop’s Wife” “A Christmas Carol” (starring Reginald Owen) “Christmas in Connecticut” “Come to the Stable” “Holiday Inn” “It Happened on 5th Avenue” “It’s a Wonderful Life” (as you said starring Jimmy Stewart).

One of the remarkable things about this movie is that all the actors are so good, but for all of them except Frank Morgan and James Stewart, this is the movie that they’re known for. Regarding James Stewart: to add to the standard recommendations (“It’s a Wonderful Life” and “Harvey”) I would add “The Philadelphia Story,” “You Can’t Take it With You,” “Rear Window,” and “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence.” I would also add that for all his “aw, shucks” persona in the movies, he was a Colonel in the Army (in the Air Corps, which wasn’t its own service at the time) who flew combat missions over Europe, and came home with a fair amount of what we would now call PTSD. 2:27 Bicarbonate of soda is basically the same as baking soda; you mix it with water and drink it to neutralize acid. Jimmy Stewart joined the US Army Air Forces about the time this movie was made. Many of us airplane fans think it's among his best films, "Strategic Air Command" features lots of flying scenes, most especially, the astoundingly huge Convair B-36 bomber. If you dare to see it, you might try giving "Dr. Strangelove" another look because you get a taste of what the Cold War and SAC was all about. Tom Hanks is sometimes characterized as the modern Jimmy Stewart: very versatile and occasionally brilliant. By the end of his career it was assumed that if you had Jimmy Stewart money, your movie stood a good chance of at least being good. Some day watch _The Shootist_ just to get your take on a later and much more famous Jimmy Stewart. The film is also screen legend John Wayne's final role. In any case, having watched Tom Hank's career from _Bosom Buddies_ to present, there's a very similar trajectory to Jimmy Stewart's. And yes, I'm so damned old that I saw _Bosom Buddies_ when it originally aired. No offense to any of the artists involved, but Tom Hanks was the clear stand-out. It was a sitcom that ran two or three years. The premise was a couple of guys dressing in drag so they could live in a women's college dormitory. How that show ran so long is beyond me, though I remember watching it offhanded at the time. As I say, Hanks was the clear stand-out, and it reminds me of early Jimmy Stewart. He was often able to transcend his material. Can you even imagine anyone else playing George in _It's a Wonder Life_ ? It honestly escapes me. I know a lot of Golden Age actors, and I can't imagine any young up-and-comers in the role. Can you imagine the film even working without him? Jimmy does that a lot in his early career. The fact that he was later given more complex material would have been no surprise to anyone. Just as Tom Hank's later career was no surprise to anyone watching _Bosom Buddies_ .

@@SYLTales It's funny you mentioned Bosom Buddies. (I also watched it first time 'round - if nothing else was on). When Tom Hanks started doing movies, I was actually amazed that he could really act. But yes, he is a sort of modern Jimmy Stewart - the guy everyone wishes was their dad.

Jimmy Stewart appeared in five musicals. One of his earliest appearances was in a non-singing role in the Jeanette MacDonald - Nelson Eddy operetta *Rose Marie* (1936). His very next role was in another musical, *Born to Dance* (1936). This time he did sing, introducing the Cole Porter standard, "Easy to Love." In 1941, he appeared in two more musicals, again in non-singing roles: *Pot O' Gold,* and *Ziegfeld Girl,* and in 1954 he played big band leader Glen Miller in *The Glen Miller Story.*

Hi Dawn. Yes, that's the guy from Its a Wonderful Life. Also, there's a guy from The Wizard of Oz. Still further, this movie is clearly adapted from in You've Got Mail staring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. The scene where they are spying on her waiting for him to show up is repeated word for word in You've Got Mail.

I love your reactions to these classic movies. There is another black and white Christmas movie that I believe has been lost over time, but you might enjoy, it's called "The Bishop's Wife" with Cary Grant and David Niven, a hidden gem like this reactor :).

The boss in Frank Morgan who played the Wizard [and other parts] in the Wizard of Oz, 1939. "He's in a Huff." Groucho Marx would have said "Which Huff? There is an upper huff and a lower huff, so which one is it? Or is it 1 and a huff huffs? Jimmy Stewart was a major star for decades...he could be a serious actor in dramas, but also hysterically funny...many say Tom Hanks has come close the being today's modern day Jimmy Steward. Except Stewart was a WWII hero as well, risked his neck as a pilot and later became an air force reserve general for the rest of his life.

Yes, bicarbonate of soda was for heartburn, or stomach upset. Today we might use Alka-Seltzer or Tums. If you watch a lot of films from the 20s-40s, you will hear bicarbonate of soda, bi-carb, bromo-fizz, etc.
@tarmaque
@tarmaque Год назад
Bicarbonate of soda is simply "Baking Soda," available everywhere as a leavening agent used in cakes and cookies and such. In the past it was also used as a cure for heartburn as well, and still works today. However there are more appropriate treatments for heartburn in these modern times.

I watch this one every Christmas time. I find Clara a little hard to like, too, and I was always wondering why he kept doing the things he did instead of just telling her the truth. But I’ve thought it over and I get it now. The things we find hard to like about Clara are the reason he did all those things. He had to come to terms with that fact that the woman he’d been fighting with was the woman whose true self he’d seen in those letters. But once he did that, he began to doubt that she’d find him as acceptable. After all, he’d nearly given up entirely before coming back. Suppose she walked off and never came back? And hadn’t she spent months tearing him a new one for everything from his looks to his mind to his job? He may have decided to look past her faults to see the person who wrote the letters but maybe she couldn’t. So when she made one last crack about his looks, just as he was about to tell her the truth, he chickened out and decided to make himself look a bit better by inventing Matthias Popkin… balding, short, fat, greedy, unoriginal Matthias Popkin. Once she thought she was being catfished before it was popular, by a guy who plagiarized in order to sound deep (which Kralik used to slyly confess that he’d ripped off a famous author or two), Kralik looked like a much better specimen.

Yes, that is Jimmy Stewart, who also starred in "It's a Wonderful Life". He's in a lot of very good films - Try "Rear Window" or "Vertigo" both of these great Hitchcock films star Jimmy Stewart. As for another B&W film with Jim Stewart you'd LOVE... "Harvey".

This story was remade several times, most famously as You've Got Mail (1998) starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. Jimmy Stewart (Alfred Kralik) has been in many great movies, including After the Thin Man, You Can't Take It With You, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, The Philadelphia Story, It's a Wonderful Life, Rope, Harvey, Rear Window, The Man Who Knew Too Much, Vertigo, Anatomy of a Murder, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, and How the West Was Won. Frank Morgan played Mr. Matuschek. You may have recognized him from The Wizard of Oz (in which he played several roles). That's movie I'd love for you to react to (assuming you haven't seen it). Bicarbonate of soda is just baking soda. It can be used as an antacid. Thanks for this reaction!

Wow. I feel like So few people know about this movie, even though You’ve Got Mail is based on it. It’s my second favourite Christmas movie, bested only by Scrooge starring your countryman Alaistair Sim. It’s also one of the very best romantic comedies ever made, IMO. It was directed by the celebrated Ernst Lubitsch, whose films were said to have ‘the Lubitsch touch’, the gentle, witty comedic flair based on real humanity. The scene where Mr Matsuchek goes off to treat young Rudy to a Christmas feast is perfection. I can’t remember if you’ve seen The Wizard of Oz, but Mr Matsuchek is played by the wizard himself, Frank Morgan. Another fantastic black and white classic romantic comedy that I know you will love is The More the Merrier from 1943, starring Jean Arthur and Joel McRae. Its not a Christmas movie, but it features the steamiest scene in Hays Code Hollywood history.

You've got mail. I remember being quite disapointed going to a theater to see "You've Got Mail" and realizing early on it was "The Shop Around the Corner" with AOL EMail instead of a postal service. Hollywood does this too often. Steve Martin did it with "Roxanne" which was a bad remake of "Cyrano De Bergerac" and he did it with "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" which is an inferior remake of "Bedtime Story" with David Niven and Marlon Brando. The Steve Martin version has an different ending and it just lets the air out of the whole idea.

Never heard of this one, that I recall, but the tone of it reminds me of the '90s film, "Empire Records" -- with the ensemble cast, and extended family in the shop and all. I wonder if it was the inspiration for that one.

There's also a Hindi movie based on this one called Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge (it's most in English + subtitled). I recommend both movies anytime you might get a chance to watch them.
