An inept Czech peasant is torn between greed and guilt when the Nazi-backed bosses of his town appoint him "Aryan controller" of an old Jewish widow's button shop. Humor and tragedy fuse in this scathing exploration of one cowardly man's complicity in the horrors of a totalitarian regime. Made near the height of Soviet oppression in Czechoslovakia, The Shop on Main Street features intense editing and camera work which won it the Academy Award™ for Best Foreign Film in 1965. -The Criterion Collection

This is one of the most touching films I've ever seen in my entire life. I could watch it over and over. The way he followed her at the end, to reach his dreams of taking care of the sweetest old lady he knew, and making eachothers company forever and far from prejudices and hatred....

@@ArnoldSmeghead to be exact, nazis were only in Germany, as members or supporters of national socialist party of germany (in german nationalsozialitstishe party...) in shortcut Nazis Party... in Slovakia it was fasist party or to be more pricise klerofasist (lead by catolics priests), not nazis...

I saw this film when first released. It haunts me to this day. The message powerfully documented. The acting superb, musical score remarkable. Kaminska and Kroner are on target as is the supporting cast. My favorite film of all time.

Czech was commonly used for Czechoslovak. Slovakia today was all part of the same country, which we usually just called Czech. There's gonna be people like you in 100 years in the future going "hey he wasn't Papuan, he's from Bougainville"

You should change the description and check your facts. Although this movie was made in Czechoslovakia - a country of two nations Czechs and Slovaks - the theme takes place in fascist Slovakia. During WWII Slovakia became voluntarily independent fascist state with the strictes anti-jewish laws. Czech land was under Nazi Germany protectorate - involuntarily, therefore they were occupied. This film takes place in Slovakia, in a Slovak village, the actor is Slovak, the whole film is in Slovak language and the theme of the film takes place in fascist Slovakia. You are twisting historical facts and also the content of the film.

"Czech" is frequently used as shorthand for "Czechoslovakian". The film movement the "Czechoslovak New Wave" that "Shop on Main Street" is part of is more commonly known as "Czech New Wave". No disrespect to Slovaks is intended, it's just that "Czechoslovakian" is such a mouthful. Plus, the movie highlight's Slovakia's shameful participation in the Nazi program of genocide. So maybe it's best for Slovak P.R. that the Czechs take credit for this one.

+Tomas Kurjan It's a Slovak film about part of Slovakia's history. Czech as a short for Czechoslovakian is factually wrong. period.

+Tomas Kurjan Why are you suggesting Czechs take credit for part of Slovakia's history no matter how shameful? This film is an important part of facing our history as Slovaks, so titling it as Czech makes more harm than good. Czechoslovakia had originally been a state of two nations. Only did the Czechs monopolized what they could and exported most things under Czech brand. Slovaks had intended to have autonomy in this marriage, while they obviously ended up invisible and inexistent under the Czech label, that was pushed for so much by Czech brothers...

I wonder how much precious currency came from Israel and the USA to make this film in Czechoslovakia. It is the usual naive film with the good and bad guys to indoctrinate the young people of the generation on duty. Even before making the film they knew they would win a lot of prizes. A deal for everyone.
