My father wrote the book and he co-wrote the script. I remember the night when Shop won (I was about 12) My dad is no longer with us but his work lives on. I'm glad that at the Oscars the other night, writers were properly credited and honored. Great movie, great cast, great direction, great writing. I'm proud of my father's incredible accomplishment

Thanks so much for posting. This has always been one of my all-time favorite films. You have indeed reason to be proud of your father!

Wow, that is awesome! The Shop On Main Street is easily one of favorite films of all time (and one of the best films ever made, in my opinion). It is one of the most powerful works of cinema ever produced. Congrats on your father's accomplishments -- you are lucky to have such an incredibly talented father. May he rest in peace.

Sir - you probably will never see this post but you are blessed to have a father that was part of this story. I first saw this film in university, shown by professor d´´haroncourt at UC Davis in 1978. We could not figure out why a guy who rubbed shoulders with the artistic aristocracy of Europe was entertaining engineering students with movies for elective courses. www.ucdavis.edu/news/obituary-everard-dharnoncourt/ I would be certain he knew your father. But he introduced us to this film and 40years later, I just purchased 3 copies to share with people. It is the week after this historic 2016 election in US , and there has never been a better time in my life to remind people of our common humanity. This movie says what cannot be said in words alone. Thank you , George and D´haroncourt. Time to play it forward. nancygossett@gmail.com

Hi Nancy, you thought I'd never see this post and voila! - it only took a few minutes in the world of Google :-) I'm assuming you have bought the Criterion DVD? That is a stellar digital remastering; my only beef with it (and this is not Criterion's fault whatsoever) are the subtitles. They are adequate in conveying the dialog but don't come close to capturing my dad's lines, written in Czech, of course. Many little jokes, nuances, puns are lost in translation. Glad you love this work so much. It truly is a masterpiece. I knew the director Jan Kadar well - he spent countless hours in our living room, drinking black coffee, smoking endless cigarettes and brain storming with my dad. I never got to meet Ida Kaminska but did meet the lead actor, Josef Kroner - a brilliant actor and a very sweet, humble man. Love your UC Davis story btw :-)

I watch now the documentary on the history of Czechoslovak New Wave and it brought me here. It was pleasure for me to watch this short moment in history that encouraged the film production in my country. I also liked the humility of Jan Kadar and his speech. It was hard time back in the 60s and this was a little miracle.
@buddy51
@buddy51 3 года назад
I was fortunate to meet Mr Kadar when I was a film student at USC in the 1970s when he came to speak at one of my classes. I can attest that he was indeed a very humble man as I fumblingly tried to express how deeply I loved and admired this film. This was indeed a “miracle” for which your country can be justly proud. It takes its place among the masterworks of world cinema.

@@buddy51 Thank you, its great to hear that. I am now studying at FAMO, czech film academy of Miroslav Ondricek and we have teachers who were taught by the New wave generation - also mr. Kadar taught them. Its nice to hear their stories from their FAMU school years. Btw. there are also many other outstanding Czechoslovak new wave films which I watched before applying to school and love: eg. Juraj Herz films: Creamator, Morgiana, Jiri Menzel's movies, Jakubisko films, Jaromil Jires films - Valery's week of wonders, and mr. Vlacil films - eg. the Dove, beautifully shot film. would be nice to hear if you know any.

@@Maros_Mari It’s great that you’re getting such a good education in filmmaking from some of the best in the business (by the way, Miroslav Ondricek is one of my favorite cinematographers, so it’s great to know there’s a whole academy named after him). Unfortunately, here in the United States, our access to films from that era is pretty limited. Shop, Loves of a Blonde, Closely Watched Trains and The Fireman’s Ball were all sizable hits in the US back in the ‘60s, and they are pretty much the only movies we have access to here (thanks to Criterion and Turner Classic Movies). Of course, we also have the movies that the directors of those films made in the US after they immigrated here. I wish you the best in your studies. We could use some quality movies over here.

I just saw the film. It is a moving yet troubling film. Visually superb, it is a film that transports its viewer to another time and place. Slovakia broke away from the remainder of Czechoslovakia following the Sudeten Agreement at Hitler's instigation. Slovakia was a nationalistic and ethnic oriented as the Nazis. Only the insignia that adorns the black uniforms differs from the Allgemeine SS. Getting into goosestep could get you Hitler's tolerance. PS: Try to ignore the black shirts carrying incorrect rifles.

Film bol natáčaný v Sabinove. Jediné dve veci ktoré maju spojitosť s Českom je že to vydával vtedy Barandov. A druhá vec že tú poviedku napísal počas študia v Prahe.
