Landing my Cirrus on a short grass runway. Watch the short field grass strip landing after a few failed attempts over tall trees into the short runway. With cockpit audio, ATC, & multiple cameras. Plus, BIG TRIP ANNOUNCEMENT with Michael Smith (Round The World pilot) who has a flying project in December which I'm going to be a part of. Watch this vlog for the full story.
I depart Moorabbin Airport and fly to Rothwell Airstrip, Michael's new home. Southern Sun, the Searey flying boat that Michael flew around the world is also there.
Our new flying project starts in November, I'll release more details about it over the next few weeks but get ready for lots more flying videos, new vlogs exploring new towns and airports, and reliving one of Australia's greatest aviation achievements from almost exactly 100 years ago.
Watch "Flying Round the World In A Boat": • Flying ROUND THE WORLD...
Subscribe to Michael's Channel here: / spectrefilms
All drone footage shot on private land with the owner's permission, over 15Km from the nearest controlled aerodrome and in accordance with CASA requirements.

I was thinking of putting a sign by the road next to the trees that says "Free Firewood" with an arrow pointing up!.... We've just moved in this year, there is a long list of jobs to do, but as Southern Sun takes off in under 200m a major pruning of the trees wasn't top of the list - will hopefully be a Xmas/Summer project - also, they are in a gully that drops off past the end of the runway with a seasonal creek, the bottom 1/3 is below the runway - so a thorough pruning will get it sorted. Thanks for coming over Stef, you nailed the landing and was great to catch up. See thee in Darwin! oh, www.southernsun.voyage or Insta @SouthernSunJourney if anyone keen to follow the trip.... cheers from Mother Russia... Michael.

I would have those trees down and replanted to point to the airfield by having them either side quite a bit away just to allow for the unexpected. That should be quite an adventure you are going on, retracing all the steps. I hope all the landing places are still there, as no doubt all the places they landed at didn't have a proper runway!
@SnowmanTF2
@SnowmanTF2 4 года назад
@@BoB4jjjjs If I was going to plant something there, i might do some sort of shrubs that while could get large enough to noticeable, would not get nearly as tall as trees would. Though some concrete deck pavers probably would be just or more noticeable for a similar price and might be less maintenance.

Over in the US we fly a 1950 Bonanza out of a 548 meter (1800 ft) airstrip in our back yard. It’s a little tight on hot days, but it can manage with two people and 30 gallons of fuel. The Bonanza only has a 205hp engine so your Cirrus should have no trouble even with the higher stall speed.

I used to instruct at Moorabbin airport in the late 80's. I once took a Piper Warrior to Riddell's Creek airstrip to visit a friend of the family in his 80's who had a Tiger Moth there. It's sealed now, I think - but back then it was a single grass strip. Spotting that grass airfield, with a line of painted tyres, I landed - and the roll out was REALLY rough. Well ! I thought - I'm not liking these grass runways! Then, as I taxiied to the hangars, I passed through TWO rows of painted tyres - I had missed the runway entirely and landed on the grass verge to the side of it!!

Hints for Darwin in December. Keep a towel handy in the cabin. You’re going to sweat like you’ve never sweated before. And that’s just sitting still. When you shower, don’t bother drying off. You’ll be 100 percent wet 3 minutes after walking outside. Drink lots of water. You can practice by taking a shower in your clothes, then go out side and work in the sun. Keep applying warm water to remain saturated while working in the sun. Did I say drink water? Don’t bother with underpants, you’ll have ball rash before you know it. Have fun.

So, to keep safe on a long distance flight in a GA airplane. #1 have plenty of pee pee bottles with tight fitting lids. #2 Keep the "Get-there-itis" on a tight leash. #3 bring plenty of fuel. Seems very practical

Yes very practical advice. I think what Michael was saying about not rushing, and if you’re late it really doesn’t matter was very powerful too. Better late than never, time is just a construct of humankind anyway.

I'd love to see some STOL bush planes in the Australian Outback. Do you know anyone with a Cub or Kitfox on big tires? I'd love to know where you can and can't land in Australia. Is there public land available to land on or just private property?

Rjh Rhjj go on Facebook and look up ‘Wings out West’ and also the ‘Bush Flyers Down Under’ page. This is not USA. We can’t fly below 500 feet unless landing or takeoff and can only land on private land with permission or some beaches between low tide mark and high tide mark. Quite restrictive compared to the US.

What date are you flying into Darwin? Are you going into Darwin Airport or somewhere like MKT? Would be awesome to meet you and EYZ

far from the first 'visitor' to land there, first under the new ownership, yes. previous owner, plus one, created the strip and mowed it by hand!

Did you find any damage on the wheel covers after landing on an unimproved airstrip?
@StefanDrury

Nothing when we inspected it back at Moorabbin. I was very conscious to protect the weaker nose wheel as well.

I bet 600m felt even shorter when you had to take off over those trees!

That’s why I rotated and as soon as I was out of ground effect I started a little turn to the right, to aim over the shorter ones!

Why on earth do they have trees at the extremes of the strip? Sides are free yet the extremes are obstructed....I guess: russian roulette
