New Orleans locals, The Shotgun Jazz Band, performs 'Whenever You're Lonely, Telephone Me' live at WWOZ on Wednesday, March 8, 2016. Singer and trumpet player Marla Dixon brings the goosebumps! They sat in on the Tuesday morning Trad Jazz show with host Leslie Cooper.
This group plays Traditional New Orleans Jazz in the spirit of the great Revivalists. Emphasizing old New Orleans-style ensemble playing, a stomping rhythm section, and a genuine love of the hot, bluesy, no-frills melodies that once poured forth from New Orleans’ dance halls, Shotgun Jazz Band makes music that is both immediate in its influences and timeless in its appeal.

Most young New Orleans clarinetists seem keen on copying George Lewis who himself was influenced by Johnny Dodds. This young gentleman here finally shows in his way of playing that there have been other great N.O. clarinetists, too, e.g., Jimmy Noone, Sidney Bechet, Al Nicholas, or Leon Rappollo. Bits of all of them can be heard in his style.

Marla, I first became aware of you a year or two ago and have greatly enjoyed your artistry on dozens of videos, BUT - this one rips it! You were beautiful, facially and vocally, during the ballad part; then back to the old Mad Marla for the reprise and ending. LUV YA!

THANK YOU Marla, John, James, Ben and Twerk for a brilliant rendition of this Sweet Emma number. Goosebumps indeed. Have had the audio of this for a few months but love seeing it. How does Marla sound so phenomenal at 10am? That's a true gift. Thanks WWOZ for the Trad Jazz every day in my San Francisco office from 7-9am. A special Thanks to Leslie Cooper and all the show hosts for volunteering their time and keeping the traditional alive and strong. And thanks to all the volunteers at the station. There has been almost two years that I know for this wonderful version of Marla Dixon and her band, and it is only now that I've realized it was posted relatively recently, in July 2016. So, it is already a sort of a standard jazz take. Let jazz live forever !! Keep going on Marla !!!

just got back from New Orleans for the second time. Back to Canada. I miss the music & culture so much every time I leave. But this band brings me back. Fantastic. Marla your voice is amazing. I played trumpet myself in school and I regret not pursuing it. But I am a good bass player.

Does anyone know what microphone Marla is using? Brings out so many subtleties and nuances in her voice that I've never heard captured before. Kudos to the WWOZ sound person on this session.

sorry but this studio recording sounds bad as in dead... the live street club performances sound 10 times better, not for the atmosphere alone,but the sound is just way more alive.
