Because the way the man explained it is very disingenuous. Extremely regulating everyone's right to self preservation only handicaps law abiding citizens from protecting themselves, while the "nut cases" still have access to the same illegal weapons on the black market. Aussie's laws and heavy gun control in general don't work in the U.S. because of the fact that in America, the majority of crime with firearms is done with a firearm obtained illegally (thus, restricting everyone's right to legally obtain guns only makes criminals' jobs much easier, since they're less likely to get shot at). This is why in America, there is much more gun crime and mass shootings in areas and states where gun control is more prevalent. Think about it: if you're a criminal, would you rather rob a house in a state with heavy gun control where you're less likely to get shot, or rob a house in a state with little gun control and you're way more likely to get shot?
