Reminds me of the gunner in Full Metal Jacket shooting at everyone including civilians on the ground from the helo. "Anyone who runs is a VC. Anyone who stands still is a well-disciplined VC." In other words, anyone could be a soldier when it came to fighting North Vietnam. And this scene also demonstrated that.
What a terrifying sight , of course that was wartime and common women must know very well that approaching US soldiers that way was very dangerous for themselves.
I have a friend who went through something like this in Vietnam--only the girl was at a bar a week or so before, and he and a couple of other guys drank with her. Apparently she didn't recognize him.
Other thing was that those ladies might well have the stuff pretty much *anywhere* on their persons. I’d shoot first at their satchels, as their clothing isn’t that good at concealment. Hence, hosing them down in a random-seeming fashion has a fair chance of hitting something of an explosive nature. If they don’t explode, then they will either run off - or not come closer, due to being too injured to continue.
People with low-tech weaponry, wearing sandals and pajamas, attempting to defend their homeland from invaders. Allegedly, they were a threat to America, and democracy. Meanwhile, inside our boarders we sanction klansmen, neo-nazis, and white supremacist.

As a Russian I'll say though the americans we're winning in the vietnam war militarily and even though they won tet militarily because of the public opinion turning sharply against the war made them decide to withdraw and begin the vietnamization program.

"You listen to me, this is Vietnam you understand" Exactly, where you mow down and murder innocent civilians out of sheer bloodlust, and Hollywood decided to rewrite it to a fiction where they carried a bomb to make you seem like less of a warcrime than it historically was.
two problems with that- one, this was an australian movie, two, it was true that there WERE sappers who had such methods. especially in Counter-insurgency operations, a la vietnam and the middle east these days, and chechnya, the only difference between a civilian and a combatant was whether they had a weapon or not.
