Welcome to Fictional Fears, a series where we delve into the fundamental nature of fear by analysing our favourite horror icons from film and TV to try and understand what it is that makes them so terrifying.
In this episode we’ll dive into one of the scariest Doctor Who monsters of all time, The Silence, and break down how a species genetically engineered by the Church to absolve us of our sins ended up being one of Steven Moffat’s greatest and most terrifying creations of all time.

i think the main thing about the silence is there main power that is used basically every time. as soon as you look away you forget. that alone is terrifying and yet you dont know why you were scared or even remember why. its basically among the perfect defence. there are some suggestions i have for this series. i think a character like omega, someone who wants to return to the universe only to realise he can never as his physical form is completely gone and he exists in a realm where anything he wills is possible is something i think is another terrifying concept but not as much as the slitheen. yes the slitheen are a villain rather joked upon but the concept is something i think that really should be revisited. the concept of someone right beside you being an alien with sinister intentions inside what was a person and you have no idea is absolutely terrifying especially with the powers established inside boom town where female's can launch a poison dart or a slitheen can breathe out poison. powers they can do with in the safety of a suit and it doesnt matter if they are caught they can always take refuge inside another person's body and continue there plans.

Imagine combining the Silent’s power of being forgotten with the weeping angel’s don’t blink mechanic 😂 that might be the ultimate monster of doctor who

@@tyronechadsmith5121 i was going to mention that but i do not see much use of it. given you only remember them when your looking at them. unless you turn away then there is potential but i dont see that much use for it.

Omega is definitely one we want to cover especially when you look at how powerful he is combined with how bitter he is towards the Time Lords for abandoning him, as for the Slitheen I think the concept of them is terrifying but the execution of them made them a little too gimmicky and a joke for me, like the fart jokes and the look of the body suit, I thought the face was quite creepy but their whole demeanor, especially in the first series was a bit too comical, like they weren’t even trying to make the Slitheen scary, but if you strip all that back and look at the concept of them they have so much potential. Thanks for the suggestions they’re both great shouts for the series

I think it add another layer to the don’t blink dynamic if you’re not even able to turn away, we’ve seen before people turn and run from angels but imagine if the moment you turned away you completely forgot they were there 😂 you’d be done for. But I get a lot of the time if you turn away from an angel you’re toast anyway so it’s not a game changer

Theyre less iconic Doctor Who villains probobaly because they dont have the history of a in depth fleshed out backstory like you said Blink gave the Weeping Angels but when it came to Matt Smiths era they played a huge role in several episodes. I really like the idea but maybe they couldve been used in a more malicious sense, like influencing the Doctor to do more and showing how they moulded humanity if theyve been around since the invention of the wheel and fire

The overall thread of the final question and the two different sects of the church working to make silence fall is one of the best in doctor who for me, I hope we see the silence as a villain again maybe even like that Reddit post said just a single silent causing mayhem on earth with completely unsuspecting people.

i have this one criticism my guy, your content and your analysis is great but please, slow down. you speak so fast like youre rushing through your script that it sounds like youre trying to get through it as fast as possible like no one will hear you, were hear to hear and listen to you, please dont run your breath out, speak slower and with more gusto.

You’re not the first person to say that 😂 I think it comes from a general eagerness to get to the crux of the video without wasting peoples time but I’m starting to realise it just depreciates the quality of the video instead. Appreciate you taking the time out to give feedback 🙏 I’ll definitely step on the brakes a bit and stop rushing things so much going forwards
