I worked in a Detroit Area Prison for 25 years. We had a dedicated shower specifically for staff who didn't duck quick enough when convicts threw bodily fluids (or whatever) on them. It's also stocked with antibacterial soaps and clean sweat suits to change into.

What a good list! May I suggest three more. The first is something most people who watch horror movies know about, and that is, "Cabin In The Woods"!!!! The second is an incredible horror anthology called Trick R Treat. Trick R Treat is probably one of the greatest Halloween movies ever made, besides the movie Halloween! The last movie is a little indie flick called Haunt! Haunt was a huge surprise for me! Try it out people!

Hi Lipps! The very early part of Clarice's interview with Dr Lecter sets up their relationship. When she says she's a student and is there to learn from him. He's amused by the idea, but decides to chase her off instead. Weirdly, it's his version of being kind. He regards her as a pawn in the long-term feud between himself and Jack Crawford, but an innocent pawn, and dislikes that she's being used like that. So he chases her away with some aggression, but he's capable of being much more cruel." Fly away little Starling, fly, fly, fly." He wants her out of game. When Miggs does that disgusting thing Lecter becomes furious at Craford for sending Clarice there and at Miggs. He gives a clue for something to impress her teachers with and sends her off. At that point he desides to find out how well she thinks and learns. Coming very much from his formal training in psychiatry. As their relationship progresses he's fully aware of the lies Crawford is feeding her, and doesn't hold her responsible for them. If Clarice had actually gotten in his way he wouldn't have hesitated to kill her, but otherwise has no real motive to do so, especially after all the time and thought he's put into her. It's too bad his amygdala is so broken, he would have made a good teacher.🧓🎭📽️

I think he likes her. She shows respect and deference, something no one else has shown him in a very long time. Also, she is smart and clever (figuring out his "my self" clue). I remember when the book came out, my sister had been an ER nurse at a Level One Trauma Center for almost 10 years, and loved reading stuff like this, so she got the book, but she couldn’t finish it because she thought it was too disturbing. Of course, she’d give this “disturbing” book to her high-school-aged brother to mess with, but I absolutely engulfed that book, and then I was crazily excited when I saw that a movie had been made. Such a good book, and movie.

1. The lisping sound Hopkins makes after he says, 'I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti." is the first scene he and Foster did together and he wanted to freak her out, so her reaction is real. 2. Ted Levine/Buffalo Bill was so disturbing that he received death threats after this was released. 3. The FBI actually let them use their Quantico facility to film. 4. In the book Crawford did have a "thing" for Clarice. 5. "I'm coming to get you Murdock". The late😇 Charles Napier/Lt. Boyle played Murdock in "Rambo First Blood II". A great first time/share. 6. Everybody is hitting on Clarice but IRL hitting on Foster is a waste of time and effort. She doesn't fly that way. She has been married to a woman since it became legal in Caliphony. 7. In the book Crawford did have "a thing" for Clarice. 8. Dr. Lecter was treating Clarice 9. Others will pass this to you as well but: This movie won ALL 5 of the big Oscars.

I liked how you responded to Hannibal's heightened sense of smell. A lot of people miss that but it's done for a reason. It's supposed to show that Hannibal has a supernatural sense like a vampire or predator animal. He even looks very vampiric with the widows peak, slicked back Bela Lugosi hair, and pale skin. Going back to that scene where Clarice says "and what is he?" Then it transitions to Dr Chilton saying "he's a monster!" Hannibal is the wolfman, Frankenstein's monster, Dracula, and the creature from the Black Lagoon. He's an urban legend made flesh. Oh, and to add to the vampire similarities, when he requests Clarice's story, it's like he's consuming a part of her. The satisfaction he gets from Clarice's story almost fills him the same delight he would get from consuming people.

The first novel that included Dr Lecter was Red Dragon, about the agent who arrested him, nearly dying in the process, and his being brought out of retirement by Jack Crawford. It was adapted for the screen in the in the 1980s under the title Mind Hunter and again after Silence under original name Red Dragon. Like most folks who have seen both productions I like them equally. It's fun to see the contrast in styles and budgets. I personally, don't like the sequels. They are mostly exploitive and wonder away from the very well portrayed behavioral science in the first two stories. I'm not faulting Mr Harris for making hay while the sun shines, but Hannibal Lecter was born with an underdeveloped amygdala or suffer damage to it when he was very young. Stories that attribute his behavior to other causes have to be taken with so much salt, it ruins the taste of of the original characters. But that's just me.

Anthony Hopkins was on screen for less than 20 minutes and won an Oscar
@d.-_-.b
@d.-_-.b 3 месяца назад
The exact wording is "appearing on screen for little more than 16 minutes" which reasonable people take as how long he's in the movie for (you don't win an Oscar strictly for "on screen" time), and by my DVD copy that translates to 34 minutes 54 seconds including voice time as he enters then exits each of the ten scenes he is in. What makes the figure believable to be fair, other than how unfair it is to Hopkins by having reputable sites blindly repeat it without checking, is that Hannibal is completely absent for extended periods of the movie twice, once for almost 20 minutes and another for over 25 minutes. Also his first appearance isn't until almost 12 minutes in. Here's the breakdown from my DVD giving start - end timestamps = duration (running total): 11:55 - 18:38 = 6:43 (6:43) "May I see your credentials?" 26:54 - 30:20 = 3:26 (10:09) "Your bleeding has stopped." 50:03 - 55:20 = 5:17 (15:26) "Quid pro quo" 57:17 - 58:20 = 1:03 (16:29) "His first name is Louis" 58:49 - 1:02:10 = 3:21 (19:50) "Where will it tickle you?" 1:04:03 - 1:10:45 = 6:42 (26:32) "Good evening, Clarice." 1:11:23 - 1:15:10 = 3:47 (30:19) "Mind the drawings please." 1:16:52 - 1:19:31 = 2:39 (32:58) "Talk to him!" 1:21:13 - 1:21:33 = 0:20 (33:18) "Pulse 84." 1:47:26 - 1:49:02 = 1:36 (34:54) "I'm having an old friend for dinner."

Great reaction Lipps, like always. I really love this movie its one of the best movies of 1991. Led by two brilliant turns from Foster & Hopkins, this chilling psychological thriller is as much about power plays as it is about solving the case. And this movie is based on the novel by Thomas Harris, and there are some fun facts about it. Gene Hackman wanted to make the film, Hackman bought the rights to the 1988 Thomas Harris book, splitting the $500,000 cost with production company Orion, and had planned to direct, write and star as Lecter. Ted Tally, the man who would end up writing the screenplay, contacted Orion President Mike Medavoy who said, “Gene thinks he’s going to write this, but don’t worry, he’ll find out how hard that is, and we’ll get back to you.” Medavoy called back later and said, “Gene’s written 50 pages of the script, and he’s only 50 pages into the book. So, if you can meet with him and convince him that you’re the right guy for it, you’ll have the job.” During their first meeting, there’s a moment where Lecter mocks Starling’s southern accent. This was improvised on the spot by Anthony Hopkins, and not expected by Foster. She was hurt by the comment, and her on-screen reaction was real. However, she later thanked Hopkins for provoking a genuine reaction. This film is geared around framing every shot from Clarice’s perspective to put us in her shoes. Generally, the characters speaking to Clarice are front and centre of the frame, breaking the fourth wall by looking directly into it. When Clarice is in the frame she’s looking just off camera, that is a nice touch to notice. Hopkins’ now iconic lip roll sound after his fava beans speech was inspired by Bela Lugosi’s iconic title performance in Dracula (1931). He said, “When I was a kid, I’d tell the girls around the street the story about Dracula and I’d go th-th-th, as a result, they’d run away screaming.” Hopkins took inspiration from some unusual sources Hopkins said that he had a friend in London who rarely blinked, which, “freaked people out” and noted similar characteristics in reptiles. Reptiles only blink when they want to, and they do it consciously. He applied these characteristics to Hannibal, in the film Hopkins only blinks at specific moments. And if you notice Hopkins isn’t in the film all that much, but won an Oscar anyway, but his performance is spot on. But It wasn’t all success for Hopkins on the back of this movie. He was in a relationship with retail businesswoman Martha Stewart at the time, but she dumped him shortly after the film’s release because all she saw when looking at him was a cold-blooded serial killer. In the scene where Clarice tells Lecter about the lambs and running away from home, if you listen closely after she says, “I thought if I could save just one…” you can hear a crewman dropping a wrench off-screen. Foster remained in character and continued until the end. Keep up the good work.

Your questions about Lechter's moral code, and why people treat him with a kind of respect, are really perceptive. I think Lechter's code is about two things ... He respects courtesy and social elegance. And there are a very small number of people he meets who he respects. When people are vulgar and dishonest, Lechter hates them intensely. So we have Miggs who treats Clarice so horribly in the most viscerally disgusting ways. And we have Dr. Chilton, who is not only able to torment Lechter with impunity, but Lechterm himself also correctly sees that Chilton is a fraud and a dishonest self-promoter in the very field Lechter is in. On the other side, Lechter comes to respect Starling for her intelligence, bravery, honesty, and genuine compassion. She is authentic where so many of the people in her field are, in Lechter's view, contemptible functionaries. Plus, we get the tiniest hint that Lechter also respects Barney, the asylum. attendant. When he's trussed up in that restraint and Dr. Chilton tells Barney to go, Lechter quietly breathes out, "Barney." That indicates that he trusts Barney to be straight with him and maybe even protect him a little. Maybe he found Barney to be another intelligent an honorable person ... not elegant and sophisticated, but authentic. As for why people still treat Lechter with respect, still call him "Doctor," that's partially custom, and partially strategic I think. I believe it's customary to refer to a doctor as "Doctor" essentially forever, no matter what they do or what their social status becomes. But I also think that once Lechter is caught and, (they think), well and truly caged, there's no ongoing value in treating him disrespectfully just to punish him ... especially when he MIGHT be manipulated by superficial respect into behaving himself or even helping with serial killer cases like this one. If treating Lechter courteously day to day makes him easier to handle, then why not do it? That said, I agree, a second dinner is a bit much! P.S. I've often thought about whether it was okay for Clarice to pursue Bill in the house alone. On the surface, no. On the other hand, she was there alone because she was doing background investigation, not expecting to pursue him. And this was reinforced by the other FBI guys being so sure that THEY were about to arrest Bill. And once Clarice saw that she'd found Bill, and that the girl was probably in the house too, I think she thought she couldn't wait for backup. He might have just gone down and killed the girl if he wasn't busy evading Clarice. Anyway, that's my take. I wonder what an actual FBI agent would say.

Hannibal's powers of perception are amazing. And not just sight, hearing and smell... his ability to psychologically dissect people is well-written and shows a powerful intellect. In many ways, he's actually written as a chivalrous character that preys upon particularly vile and/or evil people. It's insinuated that he uses his psychological knowledge as a window into people's thoughts and character, then goes after the worst of them, while actually protecting the good ones. Everything about that first interaction with Hannibal was all about him testing Clarice. He poked and prodded her character, testing her honesty, and integrity. He even tries to offend her and provoke her, just to see her reactions and responses to various stimuli. She earned his respect, so when Miggs assaulted her in that way, Hannibal sought to avenge that act. And you're correct, Barney seemed a bit simple, but a genuinely nice guy. I think Hannibal also liked the senator. He was testing her as well, and when she didn't break, he helped and even complimented her elegance. It makes you wonder what the nurse was doing that offended him enough to attack her the way he did.

In effect her judgement was right, when you consider the net effect was Clariece had Bill face to face, held at gunpoint. Her only failure was not being prepared to fire when Bill ducked out to the back of the house. Understandable given Clariece's rookie status, but it was her hesitation at that point that was her biggest failure. I'd say after that she screwed up by not immediately calling for backup from that room before pursuing Bill on her own. But Clariece's choices to that point were spot on, and if it was a mistake for her to be in the field alone, it was the department's and not hers.

@@Mr.EkshinI disagree with the statement that Hannibal only targets bad people. While he’s happy to “eat the rude”, he’s willing to step outside of that; he killed two cops, three EMTs, and a tourist to escape prison. Those killings seem fairly indiscriminate, at least along moral lines. I think Lecter is really just a monster.

@@davidemarzoli4815 - Probably true, but this is still just a written character. Just look at all the low-level "henchmen" the hero takes out in your average action film. Most were probably just working stiffs that thought they'd found themselves a decent security job.

As a trans person I thought I'd leave a comment about Buffalo Bill and the movie's take on him. The "not a real transexual" comment is a pretty complicated and loaded statement, though the movie at the time tries at least to make a clear separation between buffalo bill and transgender people and make it explicit that this isn't a trans person thing, it's a Buffalo Bill thing, and that's appreciated, at least. Buffalo Bills psychology seems to be more a persons desperate desire to find an identity, we can see from him little lair he seems to have gone through many phases, like all the nazi memorobillia and tattoos he has. He tries on a persona and then after a while he realizes it isn't working and moves onto the next thing. Hence the imagery with the butterflies/moth cocoons, he's always evolving but he never quite becomes that beautiful butterfly he wants to be. Buffalo Bill is a fictional character, so I'm willing to just agree with the premise of the plot and accept that he isn't really trans though. But getting rejected by a medical facility isn't proof that someone isn't trans, surgery or not. Trans rights and acceptance have a VERY strained relationship with the medical and psychology industry, as they more often than not do not act on the behalf of trans people but instead act as their gatekeepers. Even today trans people are asked in their appointments if they played with dolls or action figures as a kid, asked how they masterbate and refused treatment if they don't "perform" their appropriate gender well enough for their doctor. (In the UK, where I am from, you're expected to wear make up and wear dresses publicly for at least 2 years, changed your name, come out to your family and live completely as a woman (if you're a trans woman) before you are given treatment such as hormones, never mind surgery. As you can imagine it's a pretty traumatizing and humiliating experience and is perpetuated by discriminatory and sexist, outdated, ideas about what gender is. Just food for thought for anyone curious about a trans perspective on Buffalo Bill, this movie and the time it's from, and how you can't always take for granted claims about people not "really being trans", which is especially in these times, used to gatekeep and harm trans people just trying to live their lives.

@Starmongoose
@Starmongoose 3 месяца назад
@@paulelroy6650 Did you read my comment? I said as much, I simply explained why taking institutions assertations that someone isn't trans isn't proof that they are in fact, not trans. I explained that this fictional character was written under the assumption that this was the case however, so we can just accept that it is so. Even if you consider that 2024's medical system is infallible and unbiased (laughable, but let's assume), Buffalo Bill apparently sought help from these institutions 10 years before the novels story takes place, which is 1983. So in 1973 he went for medical help for being trans. 1973 was the year homosexuality was removed from the DSM as a mental illness. Trans acceptance and knowledge today is still lacking, but it doesn't take much imagining to think about what trans people were treated like in years where being gay was still considered a mental illness.

The moral code of Hannibal is both simple and really complex at the same time but it would not be wrong to say that he kills for 2 reasons: He enjoys killing people who he perceives as RUDE or he kills out of necessity like when he killed the guards in order to escape (They were not rude to him at all)

What else could Clarice do? She obviously had no mobile phone, and I can't recall anything that suggested that she had any kind of communication device in the car. If she left in order to try to get to a phone, Billy might have killed his victim and possibly managed to escape. Chris Carter, the creator of "The X-Files", was partially inspired by Jodie Foster's portrayal of Agent Starling when he created Agent Dana Scully. In the early episodes of "The X-Files", Scully even has a similar hairdo 😄 Thanks for the reaction!
