Hey Blue, You are thinking of the skin as it would be on a person. However, he treated the skin like you would do for leather from a cow or an alligator. You can treat the skin of dead animals to make them soft and useable as cloth. That's probably the process that Buffllo Bill used to achieve his woman's suit.
You just made Buffalo Bill even creepier for me because I never even thought about that aspect of what he was doing. He spent a lot of time and effort keeping his victims skin pliable and preserved. So gross!
Lechter is basically a caged lion. It's the eyes. You might be safe at times, and some may even earn a level of its trust, but it remains dangerous, and you will always be prey.
Yeah, Hannibal won't go out of his way to hunt down people who've been polite and respectful to him, like Clarice and Barney. But Boyle and Pembry were polite and respectful too, and he killed them to escape, without thinking twice.
Lecter being able to smell what perfume she wears, but didn't use today: If you wear perfume, some of it gets on your clothes. If she hadn't dry cleaned her coat, it probably still had a lingering scent. Lecter's cell and hallway has a consistent scent profile that he's very familiar with after being in it for years. While I'd think her soap and hair shampoo would overpower what small amount of scent from her perfume might remain, there are people who have trained their sense of smell for specific tasks that they might be able to pick up such a scent. Some high end perfume makers can tell you exactly what went into a perfume just from the smell, sommeliers can do the same with wine.
In the book...he smelled a "poof" of her perfume when she opened her purse. (He's behind bars, not glass in the book.) And he knew her "bleeding had stopped" because he could smell her band-aid.
Right. I used to go camping in Colorado. I was sniffing for something that should be easy. Mountain Lion droppings, or bear. If it's fresh, i would leave and camp elsewhere. But after a few years of this, I started being able to identify details about other people, that i used to not pick up on. It was interesting
I've know people who can smell a UTI on a fully clothed individual, so yes, I buy Hannibal`s heightened sense of smell. Some people have 20-15 vision and others are legally blind.
Muhammad Ali could smell his opponents during fights and used the information to mock them. "Your kidneys are done, Joe! Or did somebody piss in your mouth?"
One of the more delightful reactions to Lecter's escape. I keep seeing surprise on people's faces at how he did it, but as you pointed out, the methodical way he assesses his environment makes it no surprise at all. There WAS only one way out.
@@manticore4952 Did they do that in 1991? And how would you do that to someone behind their back on a gurney if you didn't yet know the extent of their injuries?
Hey Blue, In the novel, as Buffalo Bill dies, he asks Clarice "What does it feel like to be so beautiful?" because that what he wanted to be. Lecter said Bill was turned into a killer filled him with so much self-loathing. Hence he idolised the moth for it's ability to transform, that his dream was to transform himself into someone completely different - into a beautiful woman.
Books in order featuring Hannibal lector #1"red dragon"Hannibal,s debut"#2silence if the kambs#3hannibal,and#4"Hannibal rising"about young Hannibal lector, how it all started.
Hannibal fell in love with Clarice. That is why he doesn't hurt her and helps her. He knows she feels like the smallest person in the room, as shown by her always being the smallest, but also sees her drive to be the best.
BTW, the guy who hands Clarice her badge at graduation is John Douglas, retired head of the FBI Behavioral Science unit. He was amazing. He sometimes could even tell what color the suspect's car was. I don't know how.
The actor playing Jame "Buffalo Bill" Gumb is Ted Levine. He also played Captain Leland Stottlemeyer on the TV show "Monk". Hard to believe it's the same guy.
Blue, Anthony Hopkins won a Best Actor Oscar for his role of Hannibal Lecter but the amazing thing about his win was that he only had 16 minutes of screen time. I hope you have my favorite horror movie on your list The Exorcist. I have been waiting patiently for one of you lovely reactors from Bulgaria, yourself, Magy or The Homies to watch this movie. Ironic that you said that Clarice had a genius conclusion because the Actress Jodie Foster has a genius level IQ. She has been acting since the age of 2
Winner of 5 Oscars including Best Picture. It was the first and only Horror Thriller film to win. The scene where Lecter bites the guard in the face and beats the other one to death with a night stick was on Bravo's 100 Scariest Movie Moments.
"Love your suit." _wink_ What does Lecter get from that, you asked, Blue. He, in a moment, acknowledged that the senator wasn't so upset by her kidnapped daughter that she failed to do her own hair and makeup and put on a sharp getup. What he got is that the senator will cry that night when she's alone because Lecter loves shattering illusions more than anything else.
@@Living_with_Narcissists Agree. It’s one of little jabs that only spiteful, egotistical, sociopaths enjoy. She and everyone else thinks it’s the clothing, he knows it’s her skin.
Lector said "We covet what we see every day " , this is how they found out the killer knew the 1st victim. He saw her every day, he began to want her .
"it's kind of like keeping a souvenir though, because what you eat becomes part of you" lol Your channel is one of my favorites, because you seem like you're a little bit of a misfit and own it, like me. That's a compliment not an insult, because it makes you relatable. Nobody else would say something like this even though it's true. I really like your content. Great video!
That little pen-knife that Lecter picks up from the cell-phone "Ready when you are, Sgt Pembrey!"... short blade, easy to maneuver around noses, eyes, lips.
Good reaction to an awesome movie. Btw, this movie pretty much won every Oscars --- Best Actor for Sir Anthony Hopkins, Best Actress for Jodie Foster, Best Picture etc. And Sir Anthony Hopkins holds the distinction of winning the Oscar for Best Actor even though he only had about 16 minutes of screen time in this movie. That's how dominant his performance was in this classic.
First, you are one of the few reactors I've seen that guessed the how Lector was going to escape on the ambulance. Maybe you should be a serial killer profiler. Second, you mentioned his stare. Anthony Hopkins did his best not to blink just to add to the creepy factor. Third, Jodie Foster refused to talk to or even meet Hopkins on set or elsewhere. She has said in interviews that she has never met him in RL. She did this partially to make the scenes with him more intense but also because she said he scared the sh!t out of her. Great reaction! Keep it up if you continue having fun doing it.
The story was inspired by the time the FBI asked serial killer Ted Bundy to create a profile of the green river killer and when they finally arrested him they realized that Bundys profile was pretty accurate. The scene where Buffalo bill kidnaps Catherine is also inspired by Bundy because he would fake having a broken arm to get the woman he wanted to kidnap to help him and then he would hit her over the head and push her in his car. The character of Buffalo bill was a compilation of some famous serial killers including Ed Gein who killed a few people and would steal recently buried bodies and use the bodies to create things like a pair of gloves and a lampshade made from human skin and furniture made from bones and skulls. I recently found out that the actors who played Buffalo bill and Catherine actually dated during the filming of the movie.
Hannibal Lecter has a whole series of films Hannibal Rising (first prequel) Red Dragon (second prequel) Silence of the Lambs Hannibal There's also a remake TV series called Hannibal I think you would enjoy the films and the series. 🎃😈💀
Ted Levine is the talented actor who plays 'Buffalo Bill'. He also played the bad guy in JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM, though he often plays law enforcement officers. Anthony Hopkins (Hannibal Lecter) has been impressing audiences since the 1960's. He recently played Odin in the THOR movies, but has reprized his role as Hannibal the Cannibal in two very good sequels to 'Lambs', HANNIBAL (2001), and RED DRAGON (2002). They are worth checking out. One of my favorite horror movies is THE GRUDGE (2004) starring Sarah Michelle Gellar (aka Buffy The Vampire Slayer). It's a remake of a Japanese 'ghost story' retold for an American audience and starring a top notch American cast, actually filmed in Japan. The movie really gets under your skin, as does a certain sound you will learn to fear.
Good film and good transformation! Still it's otherwise interesting, fun, and has good comedic energy without reducing the horror. Some of the other vfx scenes were great too. Worth a watch all around.
You have to watch Bram Stoker's Dracula, if you haven't already. American Werewolf in London, Wolfman (2010), Blade, Van Helsing, are all fun, must-watch Halloween flicks.
It's not Halloween themed but does have the month in the title. "The Missiles of October" was a 2 part made for TV movie. As such, it didn't have a big budget or any effects or action to speak of. I still found it very entertaining though. It's about the Cuban Missile Crisis, when it seemed very possible that the USA and the USSR might wind up launching nuclear attacks against each other.
For October or beyond, I highly recommend adding The Babadook (2014) to your list. No movie has ever made me feel so scared AND depressed at the same time. Even William Friedkin, director of The Exorcist, said that he's never seen anything more terrifying.
You have to understand the limitations on using deadly force. You have to be in imminent fear of death or great bodily harm to justify the use of deadly force and him simply running away into his house doesn't hit that mark. They were smart to have her not shoot at that point as that is what most officials would have done. Now what they would NOT do is go chasing the suspect further into the house while solo since the perp has all of the advantages at that point. She didn't know the layout of the house nor where any weapons might be. Also for the fact that she didn't call it in either. The smart thing to do would be to go back outside and called in the calvary.
It's good that you got to see this classic horror film. Dr. Hannible Lecter is one of the greats. I also enjoy seeing your reactions and using your knowledge of psychology as a lens through which to see these films. I enjoyed hearing you discuss accents at the end of this video, and that you tend to adopt the accent of what you're seeing. Not all people are gifted with that ability. Keep up the great work!
19:50 "Do you know how you caught me, Will?" "Good-bye, Dr. Lecter. You can leave messages for me at the number on the file." Graham walked away. "Do you know how you caught me?" Graham was out of Lecter's sight now, and he walked faster toward the far steel door. "The reason you caught me is that we're JUST ALIKE" was the last thing Graham heard as the steel door closed behind him.
Promise if you get accepted into the FBI, you'll keep posting reaction videos, Blue. Your hair and wardrobe people have earned a bag of Halloween candy because your look is killing it.
Good cool horror films: - Jeepers Creepers - Cujo - Saw - From Dusk Till Dawn - Dog Soldiers - American Werewolf in London - The Lost Boys - Near Dark - Critters - Trick-R-Treat - 30 Days of Night
Studying psychology, very interesting. The human mind is the greatest puzzle. I was 2 classes away from having it as a minor, I wish I would have just taken those two classes. Keep at it!
More light-hearted! I'm locked up, covid quarantined on a cruise ship right now, and THAT choice of words got a laugh from me that I imagine was heard on land somewhere! Nice! It's fun knowing how suprised you're going to be. As was anyone.
1. This thing snagged all 5 of the big OSCARS 2. IRL you're wasting your time guys trying to pick that up. She doesn't do men. 3. Lt. Boyle/Charles Napier also played Murdock I'm commin' to get you". "Rambo II". 4. Ted Levine got death threats for the performance he did playing Buffalo Bill. 5. The FBI actually let them use Quantico. 6. The lisping following "I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti." was ad lib to see if she would freak out. It was the first scene they filmed together and it worked. 7. Lecter was treating Clarice.
I hope "The WItch" from 2015 is on your list. Interesting what you said about accents because I was listening to you and was like "When did she start picking up a British accent??" You can really hear it on a lot of words now.
In many countries today, especially in the West, a law enforcement officer will have to show his grounds for shooting someone. In her situation, when she hasn't actually seen him do anything, she hasn't seen a weapon, and his back is turned to her, her training will make it very hard to shoot him.
I had read the book before seeing the movie, so I thought I was ready. Then Clarice walks up to Hannibal Lechter's cell and I was stunned. Just standing here, he exudes Menace, looks at everybody as potential prey, doesn't blink his "dead Shark eyes," and gets into Clarice Starling's head toot suite. "Creepy" only touches the surface of Hannibal Lechter. It is unfortunate that actor Ted Levine didn't get AMPAS attention for "Jame Gumb" or his "Goodbye Horses" dance. 28:05 Mrs. Lippman, I presume? 29:21 Have you ever "had a friend for dinner"?;)
Cool reaction. Loved this movie. Don't belittle yourself with your thoughts, you guessed Lecter's maneuver to escape, most people don't. When you can, improve your mic's quality, I know it's expensive.
Human skin (like ALL skin) can be made into leather and/or suede. It shrinks as it dries, which is why he was looking for large girls. Disturbing, but accurate.
BB is not transgender like Hannibal said but feels he's supposed to be. He is based off of Ed Guin who is the inspiration for other horror villains like Psycho, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and American Horror Story
Its useful to know that THEY figured it out, by bouncing ideas on each other back and forth going over what Lecter said. That kind of discussion also yields better answers than one person alone.
Very cool reactions Blue. Loved your comments and thoughts. Thanks for a great video. I also agree with others that The Crow and Black Swan are good ones to watch, and your educational background could be used just to see how crazy some characters may be.
The villains of leatherface from Texas chainsaw, buffalo bill from silence of the lambs and norman bates from psycho were based on the killer Ed Gein The Wisconsin Ghoul
"I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice Chianti." is an inside Dr.'s joke. In the mental hospital as a patient Lector would most certainly be taking MOA Inhibitors. & The three things you cannot consume while taking MOA Inhibitors. Liver, Beans & Wine...
I think that Lector grabbed the pen while they were changing his clothes or putting his uniform on. He wasn't always restrained and the guy that dropped the pen, didn't even know it until later. They weren't watching him very well, just like his 2 guards weren't and they became part of his artistic and majestic slaughter.
When Lechter escapes, you have the advantage watching the movie of seeing him attacking the guards. The policemen there, who didn't see the attack and instead heard gun shots, they only see the body and the face of his colleague bleeding, since he wore his uniform and his face. Their human reaction is going to be helping their peer, not "Nahhh, thi is classical Hannibal, stop him!"
Haha I love how you picked up Clarice's 'southern drawl' (common name for American- south accent). I learned Mandarin in a southern city. They don't pronounce the 'shh' noise so much; they change it into a 'sss' noise. Then I learned in a more standard accent city and my accent changed back to more 'standard Mandarin with an American accent.' But on cue I could bring back my 'China southern drawl' 😅 speak Mandarin in a southern accent on top of my inherent American accent. My northerner friends thought it was the strangest sounding thing in the world. they'd laugh and be like 'no no no I hate their accent stop talking like that.' But it's fun, it makes you feel like your words ssssnake 🐍 together more effortlessly
Leather, it's the same thing. That's why he told the women to hydrate. Lecter did not kill the innocent, he chose the impure, he began to perceive them as a psychoanalyst. Clarice had always played fair with him, and she was smart, it was him on the other side of the coin. He would never harm her, in fact he wanted more people like her. The senator mother all pompous even with her missing daughter, who cares about elegance at a time like this? The prison warden, Clarice's own boss. He empathized with her, on the flip side of the perspective he was the good guy, and he saw it in her.
All scenes you see here with the extreme face's close ups the actors did it by reading their lines, following the instructions from the director, and not interacting with the other actors. For example, it seems Jodie Foster in a face close up is taking a conversation with Anthony Hopkins or Ted Levine but in reality she's just imagining the scene and talking to nobody, the director made it look like the actors are together in the same set playing the acting sequence. It is both an acting's feat from the actors and a director's feat to assemble all together.
26:00 "Why didn't she shoot?" Starling was a trainee still. One who was struggling with the combat aspects of the job. And this was her first time in an actual combat situation. In short, she was nervous.
When Lechter escapes, the guards and the others surrounding him have no real idea what he's capable of. None of them have dealt with him in the past or know his full back story. If they had maybe they would have figured out his ruse of escaping in the ambulance.
This movie I saw long before it was released. No titles, no music and just dialog. It was so strange to see a film like that. So much was changed from the original trial print, but I think the final was so good. Accents... yes, I do the same thing. When I hear Spanish I always think in Spanish for a long time after and the same for French. I speak those two and I have accents in others too but I am not fully a speaker of those. It is an oddity that people do that. I am pleased to hear you are part of the club. I still think I hear your UK at times and now that I see you are there it makes more sense to me...I do hear some Bulgarian as well. But you have a great grasp of English in its many variances. Love your amazing reactions.
