There’s a reason this film’s legacy has continued for over 30 years. It is an exercise in pure suspense, magnetic acting, a gripping story/character study and an unconventional horror film. I don’t think anyone could’ve directed this better than Jonathan Demme did (RIP) & as while the excellent talent considered are, no one was better cast for the central duo than Sir Anthony & Jodie; Demme and the studio weren’t even sure if either one was right so they vouched for the actor they had faith in by swapping (Demme vouched for Jodie as he doubted she would be the right Clarice and then Orion exec Mike Medavoy vouched Hopkins who he was unsure of despite his lauded stage and prior screen work). Their chemistry is what draws you into their twisted dynamic & of course not to forget the disturbing performance of Ted Levine as Buffalo Bill

Although the performance Brian Cox gives in Manhunter is my favorite, there is no question that Hopkins owns the role as Lecter in this movie. The chemistry between him and Foster is undeniable, and it's all from the two actors actually being intimidated by each other.

Definitely a classic from the 90s. For ranking, it bounces back and forth from 2nd and 3rd. Don't get me wrong, I like it, but my only gripe is that it can be a tad slow at times, but after viewing it several times with a different mindset, I can accept it. To me, the most disturbing scene is when Buffalo Bill is luring Catherine to him with the feigned struggling with the furniture since that was an actual tactic from Ted Bundy, which adds to the realism of the film for me. Just the thought of what these people can do to capture or kill their victims. That's a pretty disturbing thought. I also read the Thomas Harris novel and the film actually doesn't detract too much, but I'm sure there are some minor alterations here and there. Overall, fantastic video and review and I am definitely looking forward to more in the future. Keep doing what you're doing.

Yeah overall it is fantastic, although the length and pace cause me to revisit it pretty rarely (not a bad thing, but there is something to be said for easy rewatchability). I wish there was just a tad but more Bill in everyday life, just to get a better idea of what he's up to. I agree that initial capture is really unsettling due to its simplicity, and a bit more of that would have been great. Which film is your favorite?

@@HamburgersHorror It'll probably change from time to time. But at the moment, it's Red Dragon. The main reason being that, alongside this film, it feels like Harris' novel come to life, even though it does change some things, namely Lecter is given more screen time. Though, when comparing it to Manhunter, it's about 50/50. For instance, I think Graham is more natural in Manhunter, as well as Jack Crawford. But Dolarhyde, Lounds and Reba are a bit more defined in Red Dragon, namely because of the actors playing them and Red Dragon sticks more to the book. And of course, there's Hannibal Lecter. I do have to say that every actor who has portrayed him is great in their own way, but the character, I find, is particularly strong when Hopkins is doing it. But that's just a personal opinion. Whew, that was mouthful and a half, but that's me for you. Really enjoy discussing this stuff. Might have quite the discussion in the future.

@@NitPickz Thank you! This is all great to know, especially since I haven't read the books. At least thus far I'd take Hopkins over Cox, but to be fair he had a lot less screen time to work with. I'm hopeful for Dolarhyde in Red Dragon. Similarly to Lecter, I wanted way more of him in Manhunter.

If adjusted for inflation SOTL's is a lot higher than number 35 on the highest grossing horror films list, also some of the films on that list aren't even horror movies, Prometheus, Shutter Island, The Mummy and Scary Movie are primarily other genres.

To me Buffalo Bill is the real star of the show. I don't know why, and I'm sure im in the minority, but the scenes with Anthony Hopkins never really intrigued me where as every moment with Ted Levine was captivating.

Yeah, this came out on February 14, 1991 so it was not expected to be of any importance by the studio. It truly got going through its word of mouth, but still a lot of people didn't think it would do well at the Oscars because of its early release date. This movie broke all the molds.

So strange how preconceived notions about movies do/don't work. When I see a film coming out early in the year I do have those low expectations, but sometimes they end up being best of the year. A strange dance between projected critical success vs monetary success I suppose. Would you say Anthony Hopkins was well known at this point? He'd been in a lot of great films, but I'm unsure if they were 'popular' movies
@lsgreger2645
@lsgreger2645 2 года назад
@@HamburgersHorror no Anthony Hopkins not even wasn't really known. Especially in the US. This was Jodie Foster's second Oscar in 3 years so she was starting to take off, so I am sure that is what drove this movie. I read that this role messed Ted Levine up somewhat and it took a few years to get roles again.
@HamburgersHorror
@HamburgersHorror 2 года назад
@@lsgreger2645 Oh that makes sense in regards to Jodie Foster. And I can definitely imagine studios being hesitant about Levine in a non-villain role after this.

The movie dominated Valentine’s Day and easily doubled their budget in the weekend alone. They were also one of the first Oscar nominees who had VHS/home media on its side during the Oscar campaign

Jodie Foster is fantastic as Clarice Starling and Anthony Hopkins is fantastic as Dr. Hannibal Lecter. 😀👍

Could you imagine had it been Gene Hackman as Lecter or Sean Connery? Or Michelle Pfeiffer as Clarice? There were so many names thrown around, but they chose wisely with Sir Anthony and Jodie. There’s a reason we remember their dynamic and how they’ve been friends for 32 years

I’m not saying it’s the greatest movie of all time (although it certainly has a case) but Silence of the Lambs is about as close to a perfect movie as it gets. It really doesn’t have any notable flaw whatsoever.
