According to Anthony Hopkins, it was his idea to be standing there, waiting to greet her-when the director asked him how Hannibal knows Clarice is coming, Anthony said “I can smell her.”

@@RockSmithStudio When Starling said that, I always took Lector's downward glance as a bit of shame. Not ashamed that he ate parts of his victims, but as if he's slightly (playfully) embarrassed by Clarice knowing about it/bringing it up. He always found her so noble and worthy of respect.
@RockSmithStudio
@RockSmithStudio 2 года назад
@@FarocheCouture Remember that Hannibal Lecter is a psychopath, meaning he literally can't express guilt(at least not in the way doctors define "guilt"). Also remember this is the first time he met Clarice. At this point, she's just one of Jack Crawford's pawns. He's clearly insulted that Jack sent a trainee to him and takes it out on her by calling her a rube. He doesn't start respecting her until she starts revealing her childhood, and he realizes that this woman is actually good hearted and does this work for what he considers a noble reason.
@MM-hf6om

@@FarocheCouture I agree hes embarrassed but I think as to why is that he likes being classified as " other". When she brought up that he also took trophy ( he just ate them ) she reduced him to a garden variety serial killer. I believe that's why he attacked her so harshly . She wounded his ego

I love the fact that Hannibal was fine with dismissing her and giving her nothing until she was "shown rudeness". Her trouble in coming out to meet him was counterbalanced by her desire to get something from him, so he could easily dismiss that and not care any further. But Miggs added to her trouble and tipped the scales, a balance of propriety and courtesy that Lecter simply could not help but reset. He's a psychopath, certainly, but a darn polite one. Of course, his favorite dish always was the "free-range rude". Lol

Hannibal talks to Clarice gradually throughout the film with respect and equality, something she's not afforded by her colleagues in the outside world. He doesn't hit on her or belittle her intelligence but instead allows her to stand on equal footing when figuring out the case. I don't believe Hannibal had feelings for Clarice beyond what a good teacher and hungry student would have. He wanted to guide her and make her thrive in a world she's disadvantaged in by giving her leverage with exclusive access to his mind and methods.

Yeah. To be honest at first I thought he displayed embarrassment, but since most psychopaths have virtually no shame, that's most likely not the case. Now I think his looking down and away seemed like he recollected all of his murders in a flash, and then the way he softly says: "You send that through now", looking away again, is him realizing it's all in the past and he misses it. He's sad for a second there.

Hopkins making fun of her accent was improvised and in effect it showed how Hopkins(being the great thespian he is)knew he would get what he needed out of this scene(if Jody stayed in character and she did) and it showed what a great actress Foster is, in that she stayed in character and used her shock and subtle rage to make this quite easily the best scene in the movie. That whole transition between that cheeky charming wink when she handed him the test and the rage-fueled tirade against her very hidden past which he figured out within ten seconds of meeting her being laid out bare in front of them...yeah that threw me for a loop. It’s a power struggle from the beginning, but it becomes clear in that moment just how intelligent, determined and damaged these two characters are. He hates being tested, and she hates being undermined. I like that he treats her as an equal to be reckoned with rather than a female student to be wooed.

The brilliance of Hopkins as an actor is amazing. The script is extremely well written, but the changes that Hopkins and Foster added to it, and stunning way that Hopkins played that scene is breath taking. Even the small detail of adding a touch of a southern accent to his description of Starlings adolescence was very clever indeed. Total star power. Fly, fly, fly. Fly, fly, fly. Fly, fly, fly. I love how Clarice earns Hannibal's respect by standing up for herself and turning the tables on him when he tries to break her in half by attacking her psychological vulnerabilities. He's probably not used to people being able to contend with him on that playing field. It gave some good insight into Hannibal's more sadistic tendencies and how he'd become used to being able to easily instill fear and resignation into other people. Being the "boogeyman in the cage". But her response showed resilience and a level of courage and intelligence that he wasn't giving her any credit for up until that point and you can see how much it stung his ego in his body language. But it also laid the groundwork upon which their relationship was founded from that point onward.
@FlorisDVijfde
@FlorisDVijfde 2 года назад
Nah her response to the "rube" insult is rather childish, changing the subject of analysis pointlessly to Lecter (instead of Buffalo Bill) but Hannibal still respects her considerable potential as she's a top student. And Lecter's attack is preceded by "Do you think you can dissect me with this blunt tool?" A blunder to hand over what apparently contains a test for Lecter himself. It's what infuriated him in the first place, probably just as insulting as having the pompous, incompetent but ambitious Dr Chilton as head of his treatment. Clumsy, clumsy Clarice, tut tut.

Saw part of an interview with Jodie Foster. She said Hannibal making fun of her accent wasn't in the original script. Jodie Foster's real accent combines both east and west coasts. However as Agent Starling she was trying to affect a rural hick accent. Hopkins explains in character that Clarise Starling was born a rural hick who was trying to pass herself off as an urban FBI agent. Foster's reaction is honest because she took offense as an actor, however she couldn't say anything cuz she felt powerless at a man of his stature teasing her. That fuels the rest of the scene which turns into a bit of a roller coaster from about 5:12 "Oh agent Starling you think can dissect me with this..?" I know. Very meta.

Yeah, that's the bit from CBS record: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-n27IOLX5N6w.html I never got why TV in the US or Canada is so "scared" to show sexual stuff or even swearing these days? That's so pointless. British public channels run films as they are after 9pm.

God when he tells her what kind of lotion and perfume she wears it absolutely scares her to death. Brilliant acting on her part.

You see many performances where actors appear to try too hard. Hopkins plays this character so authentically and convincingly, it seems effortless. His facial expressions, ticks and delivery of dialogue is perfect. One of the greatest performances.

Some of the finest acting you can witness! Both actors outstanding in this. The expressions, eye contact, the movements and mannerisms are exquisite!

The fact that he was just standing there in the middle of the cell just shows how much he was waiting for her... eerie

Notice how when Lecter is in close-up he’s looking straight at the camera, which would be how Clarice is seeing him, whereas Clarice’s gaze is typically five degrees off-center. A subtle way of making the audience relate to Clarice, since we are literally seeing what she sees.
