Hello, there, troopers! Today's episode of Breed in Focus will revolve around one of the (if not THE) cutest domestic chicken breeds there is - the SILKIE.
LIke I mentioned in the video, I didn't discuss everything about the breed, and you may have noticed that I intentionally omitted showgirls from the video. If you don't mind, I'd like to reserve all that for another video. Furthermore, the breed standard in America is different from what it is in the UK, so I focused only on the American standard out of bias ( I prefer the American breed standard).
A huge thanks to Robert John Hatol of Bulakan Backyard Breeders for some of my silkie education and some of the images used in this video.

👋 Hello there, trooper!
The best of Indonesia outside of Indonesia. The Northern Philippine's paramount source of purebred Ayam Cemanis and other fancy and production poultry. Soon to be certified Dominant CZ breeder.
My aim is to educate, inspire, and introduce city folk to the prospect of having chickens as pets. Moreover, this channel is meant to make people realise that animals are not just mere property or meant for utility - these creatures have feelings and want to live a happy life, the same as we do. They deserve more than what they give us.
We want people to be aware of how livestock are raised and processed to make them appreciate how meat gets on to their plate. I've met too many people who wouldn't bat an eyelash while munching their way through a bucket of fried chicken, but haven't seen a living chicken before or consider butchering as barbaric.

I started with 6 day-olds and 4 turned out to be roosters. They had to be rehomed. Then I got a DNA tested female, but sadly, she died a month later from heatstroke. My 2 remaining Silkies (Dolly and Daisy) were hatched Feb. 25, 2022 and each gives me an egg/day. I've since gotten four more babies hatched August 29th. All bantams: Mottled Cochin (Tango), Green Queen (Tulip), Steele Egger (Tickles), and a white Silkie (Tweetie). These were vent-sexed to be females. It's too hard to raise them for 5 months only to have to rehome them because they are roosters. I love my girls! I enjoyed your video. For those who live in warm climates, freeze a gallon of water and leave it on the ground to help cool them down, along with adding ice to their water.

If one was to keep a silkie as a pet would you recommend a hen or a rooster? As I would be away for most of the day, I want to know which gender is more manageable
@luciantheprotean
@luciantheprotean 3 года назад
DEFINITELY A HEN. Minimal to no noise, and fresh eggs for breakfast from time to time. Easy question.
@poshpoultry8721
@poshpoultry8721 3 года назад
Both are pretty calm. But roo's do crow.....and make more noise. Hens don't make as much noise. But are a bit more expensive.

I keep, breed, & occasionally eat silkies. They don't really require all that pampering. Mine also have little to no problems being with a mixed flock. They dry, & clean themselves off relatively quickly, so I don't have to intervene. Rarely I ever have to bathe any of them. I have a mix of sizes of silkies: Large Fowl, Medium Fowl, & Bantam. All are really good layers, & sitters. Only have 1 broody right now. Picked a bad time to go broody. I think of them both as pets, & food. Those that are usually eaten are cockerels that are terribly human aggressive only. From my flock anyways. I have Whites, Partridge, Blue Partridge, & a Black.

Thanks for leaving a comment! I raise and breed two separate kinds of poultry ~ one kind is fancy and exhibition poultry, and the other is production poultry. Despite the fact that my fancy poultry were never raised as a food source, I do consume the culls after I finish my strict selection process. The ones that pass my standards get to be sold, turned into breeders, and after they stop being productive breeders, lifelong pets. My American Silkies are not really helpless, but they do suffer when mixed with my other breeds. Also, it's extremely tropical from where I'm from. Silkies were not made for extreme heat and seasonal typhoons, hence my suggestion for better housing and management. Whereas other chickens can easily shake off mud and dirt after bathing, silkies tend to get stained and matted even for only a short time in muddy ground.
@predatorschickens6143
@predatorschickens6143 3 года назад
@@luciantheprotean I raise more then one type of breed too. We get extreme heat, cold snaps, & storms where I live, & they do fine. Hottest summer was 105°F, & our coldest winter was -20°F. A few of Silkies came from Show Quality stock.
@luciantheprotean

Wow, good for you. I would kill to have it that easy. Silkies are not as common where I'm from, and neglectful neighbours with packs of feral dogs frequent the immediate area. You have no idea how frustrating it can be for me.

My silkie (at 5 weeks old) is Not happy when handled. How can I get it more used to handling?
@luciantheprotean
@luciantheprotean 3 года назад
Hello there! The best way to do it is not to force it! Be gentle and take your time. At 5 weeks old, it no longer needs ad libitum feeding, and can be transitioned to twice-a-day feeding. Get your baby silkie used to your presence or voice by vocalising during feeding time. I personally mimic a rooster's tidbitting or do a "krooo, krooo" sound... and it has worked so far. You're essentially conditioning the chick to think that YOU = FOOD. Also, don't give the silkie its feed immediately... instead, place some feed on the palm of your hand and offer it to the baby silkie while vocalising. If you can get the silkie to feed from the palm of your hand, you're halfway there. Make sure to greet your silkie every morning and every afternoon before feeding by vocalising, and ensure that you dedicate some time to handle and stroke your silkie. Trust me, they get super cuddly and clingy after a few weeks of this. Good luck!

What kind of feeds of silkie for breeding
@luciantheprotean
@luciantheprotean 2 года назад
Oh, any chicken pellet feed that has at least 18% crude protein. I honestly think anything below 18% is just too low. Please support the growth of this channel! SUBSCRIBE and CLICK the Notification Bell to get updates on our future uploads. Keep safe, trooper!

They have many eggs already but it' s no good even i used incubator.what' s the problem
@luciantheprotean
@luciantheprotean 2 года назад
Make sure your roosters are dewormed and primed for breeding before introducing them to the hens. They must be in the peak of their health to ensure maximum fertility. Try candling your eggs on the 11th day of incubation. If you don't see a throbbing dot surrounded by blood vessels, the egg is either infertile or you have a dead embryo. Incubator heat and humidity is also a factor. Incubator temperature MUST BE MAINTAINED at 37.5° Celsius for maximum hatchability, with low to zero fluctuations. Your incubator MUST BE situated indoors to prevent wind draft and external temperature variations. Your humidity for the first 18 days should be 35%-50%, and increase it up to 70% on the 19th, 20th, and 21st day (hatching). Please support the growth of this channel!
