I have no idea why rarely no sharpening video talks about this. Thex stroke is a terrible method long term and I use it only no finish the edge.

Hey Dr. Matt, was that sarcasm with the dremel or are you serious? If so, I would like to see a video about it. Its always a bitch to hone a knife with that kind of double shoulder.

Lynn Abrams "X" stroke is one that I recommend doing. He doesn't come all the way down to the toe of the razor when he does his X stroke. Keith V. Johnson pointed out that if a new guy started doing that could end up putting too much pressure on the toe of the razor & cause geomtry issues such as warping the spine of the razor. Lynn does a very small "X" stroke almost to the point where it doesn't even look like he does one.

Stephen Davidson - yeah but do they have a video with such cool slides? and oh yeah, Rick Flair!!
@knightmare1015

Keith V. Johnson mentioned it in one of his bevel setting videos but not much else. Oh and Anthony Esposito's clean up "X" strokes pretty much keep the entire razor on the stone he just flips the razor over and comes back in the opposite direction. I think I saw Frank Misa do the same thing on Instagram. But no Ric Flair though, L.O.L.

I'm guessing that is a cut piece of granite for honing demo. If so good idea! Thanks for taking the time for others to learn; you're very generous with your knowledge. Do you award Dr. Matt Certificate Diplomas for your graduates?

Mark Dayoc - Yes Mark, piece of granite. I wish it was some fancy hone but I had my granite guy make it as I plan on putting some type of substrate on top to clean up edges. And yes, your are officially a graduate Mark!😜

@@drmatt357 - I stumbled on something the other day (not sure if it's already used for honing) and I figured I would pass it on and see what others think after trying it. Get some smooth paper of your preference and lay it flat on a glass or polished granite surface. Take a regular pencil and lightly scribble throughout the paper not necessarily covering it completely but making sure overall it's evenly distributed throughout the area you're going to be using and try stropping with that. I'm just curious for someone with more experience to try it and let me know what the feedback is and whether or not it does a good job at honing or if it's just that my idea of sharp is too low. The smoothness of the edge going over the graphite is unlike anything else I've tried.

I haven't heard of it Andy but I guess all that really matters is if you like it. How is the edge to you?

I just do simply back and forth straight on the hone, flipping on the spine, and when I’m done on each town I’ll do about 15 to 20 mini X-Strokes to clean up. Because if your razors geometry is good you don’t need to do all of those honing gymnastics. There’s some people that think you should just do X’s every time. And some people that do those Japanese swooping strokes, and the scratch patterns are probably horizontal, so that’s why I do it that way and very careful about not messing anything up

Great video!!Great point!! When rolling I kinda think of sharpening a knife with a belly. You gotta roll the pressure to accommodate for the belly/curve.

if youre on a skinny 1.5 inch stone would this issue be avoided?

Hey Matt also you can do that on a small strop as well without having the same problem you have show with So your razor does it better

Hey Doc, I totally agree in regards to the toe getting over-honed on longer, wider bench stones. Little known fact for you; Back in the day, they actually sold razors with that odd shape, wider at the heel, and narrower at the toe. I thought all of the old razors I saw like this was due to people over-honing the razor, but that isn't necessarily true in all cases. Think about it, most of the guys back then didn't have the larger, wider bench stones we have today. They were using smaller stones (if they even owned a stone at all). Even the coticules of the time tended to be narrow. I'll have to dig up the info in my razor history folder, buy I either have an old advertisement showing these type of razors being sold, or an article written at the time about this strange phenomenon.

That’s interesting. I’ve seen a lot of Sheffield choppers that are wider at the toe and narrow down as they go back but not the other way. Thanks for the comment!

@@drmatt357 - Same here. I'd still agree that most are narrower towards the tip due to over-honing. I was surprised that they sold razors that were tapered towards the tip. Maybe the taper towards the tip was so it would be easier to reach specific parts of the face? It is odd, no doubt about it.

It was a stone a company sent me out of Israel and wanted me to test it. It was pretty amazing! They want me to come out and show them some things I discovered but lots of logistics involved. I'll keep you updated.
