Like schrodingers cat. If you open the door, the fish might be alive *or* dead. The burglar doesn't know so he can only assume it's both alive *and* dead. Or he just yanks the fish through the mailslot. Regardless, the contraption would shatter the bowl, let them know someone broke in.

The torch is meant to shine through the magnifying glass which burns the string of the alarm clock. The clock falls into the bowl making a splash. The fish is alarmed by this splash and may even be yeeted out of the bowl and onto the floor where it flops around in distress.

This was classic Simpson's. Well written and packed with humour. How utterly down hill the show went. I have watched a few new episodes in recent years and always end up turning it off
