Huh the credited writer is "Jack Barth" who only did one episode and then did a whole lot of nothing (sorry but it's true) until writing that movie "Yesterday" from last year. VERY weird. I would bet it wasn't him who came up with it though. It reads like a writer's room gag.
Some wiki trivia for you: One aspect of the rewrite was the song "Dr. Zaius" from the Planet of the Apes musical, which the staff consider to be one of the greatest musical numbers ever written for The Simpsons. The two songs in the musical were composed by Alf Clausen, who had worked as a copyist on the original film of Planet of the Apes. Weinstein-who had not seen the film at the time-pitched it in the writer's room as "Rock Me Dr. Zaius", in parody of the 1985 song "Rock Me Amadeus" by Falco. It expanded into a full song primarily concocted by George Meyer, who included "corny" aspects of vaudeville. The line "From chimpan-A to chimpan-Z" in the final song of the musical was written by David X. Cohen. Oakley commented that he has heard the line "all over the world". Several of the staffers have commented on how writing the Planet of the Apes parody generated a great deal of enthusiasm in the writer's room: Oakley described it as "one of those rare bursts of creative brilliance. A lot of the things that people remember and love on The Simpsons were horrible late-night grinds, whereas this was just a magic visit from the joke fairy.
I always thought that this Song is a Parody of "Rock me Amadeus" from Falco. But I couldnt believe that a german Song got parodied by the Simpsons. Turns out it actually was lol. "Rock me Amadeus" was really popular even in the US.
The Pyramids. The Renaissance. The Theory of Relativity. The first four Metallica albums. This entire two minutes of Simpson’s genius. Humanity’s greatest achievements.
We as a society spend too much time asking ourselves “what if” that we never bother to ask “why not”. I don’t know who originally said that, but it was on a comment from a Steamed Hams video.
Given all the crap Broadway has put on the stage over the years, this would be brilliant (but only if the same creative masterminds behind the Simpsons had a hand in it).
I was watching Seinfeld season 9 episode 12 when Elaine out of nowhere said "Dr. Zaius" and I started singing this on impulse after thinking about it never prior.
The first time I saw this episode, I nearly suffocated, laughing so hard. Many thanks to Matt, the writers, and the animators, for giving me more laughs than any comedy, ever. The greatest show, for so many years, just by pure volume of laughs.
+Sitizen Kane That's why I still support the war on drugs. Her addiction to cocaine drove her to murder him. Drugs are a more powerful weapon than any nuclear bomb ever developed.
Yes seasons 1 to 10 are the only Simpsons worth watching! anything after that is NOT The Simpsons but Zombie Simpsons as it's an undead braindead corpse that needs to be shot in the head and put out of it's misery.
+Michael Oliver Human: What's wrong with me!? Dr. Zaius: I think you're crazy. Human: Want a second opinion! Dr. Zaius: You're also lazy. You see, Dr. Zaius is a doctor giving off the cuff diagnoses. Troy as the Human asks for a second opinion. Dr. Zaius being a doctor, gives him a second opinion. It's supposed to be a different doctor diagnosing the Human.
My favorite part of the song: "Oh my gosh, I was wrong! It was Earth all along." I was a Simpsons fan from the beginning. One of the things I've always loved about the show is the way they parody the classics.
@@Franpa777 I hate to say it, but the new ones just don't do it for me. It's lost something. Not to criticize, because the show had a really, really good run. Among the things I don't like: no more Apu and no more Mrs. Krabappel (the actress died, nothing they can do about it).
@@jeffreysaari9109 I think there are still some decent jokes on the new episodes but yeah, in my honest opinion, Disney freaked it up. PD: I still see Apu in some recent episodes, probably because I'm spanish and episodes here take some time to be translated or something and they're probably sticking with those.
You can almost hear the writers of this episode laughing as they wrote this, they made it a s silly as possible and it worked perfectly, so smart and effortless yet it's genius stuff, the first ten years of The Simpsons will always be the best, no one else even comes close
Was trying to sleep last night while my brain screamed "Dr Zaius Dr Zaius! Oooohhhhh Dr Zaius! Dr Zaius Dr Zaius!" at me and I chuckled uncontrollably into my pillow. Had anyone broken in to rob me then I feel like the late night spooky laughter would've been a great deterrent, Dr Zaius really is a hero.
Phil Hartman was awesome! In ALL his works not just Simpsons. Reminds me of how Chris Farley died when you could tell that if they had NOT died they could've done so much more. They weren't just people who were doing it to make a paycheck (talent or not) they actually liked making people happy.
Just an FYI, to show how fast they were moving with this parody, that line is a reference to when Sparacus's friend (from the movie Spartacus), I believe played by Tony Curtis, dies and says, rather cheesily, 'I love you, Spartacus'. Classic.
This is one of those things where i can guarantee that the realization that Dr Zaius and Amadeus rhymed popped into the writer's head in the middle of the night and they knew exactly what had to be done
@@MURPHYCHACHO the idea of Jack Barth sitting bolt upright in bed at 3am and scrawling "Dr. Zaius = Amadeus??? PotA Musical?" on a note pad is hilarious
@@XAVR_ Now I'm imagining how he and his wife are sitting there in vain, trying to decipher the gibberish "Can play piano, couldn't before"," breakdancing"
@@samgyeopsal569 Not a musical, but there’s a Star Wars themed parody of The Beatles’ Sgt Pepper called Princess Leia’s Stolen Death Star Plans that’s pretty close
I’m not a playwright or even a writer or any kind but for years I’ve been dreaming about writing a musical version of It and I still think I can make it work
I love how while the orangutans are circling Zaius "worshiping" him, he's just standing there. He's not basking in the glory of it at all. Almost like this happens on a regular basis.
Well, honestly, in the movie they all practically worship him... So I think they wanted to portray that arrogance in this small clip... I think it worked perfectly ha ha
Dr Zaius is very jaded, in this Simpsons episode and the actual movie. He knows far more than he pretends to know. And he is not amused or surprised by most things because he knew about it prior to anyone else. God I love this episode. So many great lines.
